  • Patent number: 8504566
Abstract: A method provides search results for a handheld electronic device including an input apparatus having a plurality of input members, each of at least a portion of which have a plurality of characters assigned thereto. A type of the input apparatus is sent from the device to a server. The device receives a number of activations of a number of the input members, and sends the received number of activations to the server. The server determines a number of possible combinations of the characters based upon the received input apparatus type and the received number of activations, searches for a number of search results as a function of the number of possible combinations of the characters, and sends the number of search results to the device. The device receives the number of search results, and displays at least a portion of the number of search results.

  • Patent number: 8494591
Abstract: Methods and devices for implementing subsystem or functional aspect restrictions on a wireless handheld communication device. Data defining geographical boundaries of a restricted operating area is stored on the device. The present position of the device is ascertained and a determination is made whether the device is located within the restricted operating area. A restriction on the subsystem or functional aspect is imposed when it is determined the device is within the restricted operating area. The subsystem or functional aspect restriction can be communicated to the device via a wireless communication network. Additionally, the restrictions and boundaries can be communicated to the device as part of an IT security policy.

  • Publication number: 20130172023
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided wherein a mobile device operates some of the time on a first network and some of the time on a second network, and wherein while handling traffic of a defined type over the first network, the mobile device selectively tunes away to the second network to see if there are any messages. The method and apparatus allow a mobile device with a single transceiver to receive CMAS alerts transmitted over a 1xRTT network while minimizing disruption to ongoing delay sensitive data applications operating on a 1xEV-DO network.

  • Patent number: 8463269
Abstract: Provided is a system and method of wireless network selection based on service offered. The wireless device scans for available wireless networks upon an event triggering registration. If the wireless device determines based on its SIM that none of the available wireless networks are high priority networks for registration, then the wireless device automatically selects an available wireless network for registration based on, for at least one of the available wireless networks that the wireless device previously registered to, whether CS (Circuit Switched) service was rejected but PS (Packet Switched) service was allowed. Next, the wireless device automatically attempts to register with the selected wireless network. In this manner, the wireless device attempts to register with a wireless network that does not reject CS service while allowing PS service. If the wireless device nonetheless registers with such a wireless network, then registration can be reattempted with another available wireless network.

  • Patent number: 8417242
Abstract: A multi-RAT capable wireless device and a method for execution in a multi-RAT capable wireless device are provided. The wireless device registers with a data communication service registration point and receives an update to a preferred network,RAT combination list stored at the wireless device, the update having been sent to the wireless device responsive to the wireless device registering with the data communication service registration point. Upon an event triggering network registration, the wireless device selects an available wireless network,RAT combination from a set of available wireless network,RAT combinations having regard to the preferred network,RAT combination list.

  • Patent number: 8412189
Abstract: A method for improved system selection by wireless mobile devices in 3GPP networks is provided. Location data is retrieved by the wireless device to estimate an initial system on which the wireless mobile device will attempt initialization. Using the location data, an absolute radio frequency channel number (ARFCN) associated with the location data is determined from an ARFCN table stored in memory in the wireless mobile device. The wireless mobile device can then perform system selection using the determined ARFCN. A server generates and maintains the ARFCN table which is initially provided to the wireless mobile device at manufacturer, during provisioning or as an over-the-air update.

  • Patent number: 8380237
Abstract: Systems of methods for performing queued and moderated talk groups in a system featuring network provided half duplex communications talk group sessions. For queuing, rather than dropping a talk request from a user which is listening, the request is forwarded and maintained in a list which is the used to grant access to the talk channel. For moderated talk groups, a wireless device is designated to be a moderator network device. The requests for the talk channel are then forwarded to the moderator network device. The moderator network device is equipped with functionality allowing a user of the device to select the order in which devices are granted the talk channel.

  • Publication number: 20130010758
Abstract: Systems and methods for determining that a maximum number of IP sessions have been established are provided. There are instances when the mobile device transmits a request to the wireless network. According to an aspect, in the event that the maximum number of IP sessions is already established for the mobile device, the wireless network transmits a response indicating that the request cannot be fulfilled. The mobile device determines based on the response that the maximum number of IP sessions is already established, which allows the mobile device to determine the maximum number of IP sessions that can be supported so that IP sessions can be managed accordingly.
