  • Patent number: 4909926
Abstract: A method is provided for removing mercury from hydrocarbon fluids by high temperature reactive adsorption. A hydrocarbon feed passed through an adsorbent mass including a reactive adsorbent such as silver or copper sulfide on an alumina support. The optimum temperature of the feed to be treated depends upon the 90% boiling points corresponding to heavier feeds. A hydrocarbon condensate feed may be drawn from a stabilizer column in a natural gas processing plant at a temperature in excess of 400.degree. F. If a metallic silver/alumina adsorbent is employed, the adsorbent may be regenerated through high temperature oxidation. Once oxidation is complete, the temperature is lowered in a reducing or inert atmosphere.

  • Patent number: 4859491
Abstract: A low temperature process for repairing leakage-causing defects such as cracks, fissures, etc., in a cryogenic heat exchanger used in the liquefaction of a gas such as natural gas, especially one constructed from aluminum, involves the use of a low temperature, quick-curing filler composition to at least temporarily fill the defects and prevent further leakage. Thereafter, a sealant and, optionally, a metal patch is applied to and held in place against the sealant-treated damaged site employing a relatively slow-curing adhesive composition which exhibits good long-term sealing, and bonding performance if a patch is used, at cryogenic temperatures.

  • Patent number: 4828680
Abstract: Combustible carbonaceous particles such as particles of sponge coke or coal are incorporated with the circulating inventory of cracking catalyst in a fluid catalytic cracking unit. The carbonaceous particles selectively sorb metal contaminants in the feed, thereby extending catalyst life, and they also serve to reduce NO.sub.x emissions in certain instances. The sorbed metals values may be recovered as the carbonaceous particles are burned.

  • Patent number: 4828591
Abstract: A system and a process are provided for cooling a natural gas feed to an aluminum heat exchanger to protect it from mercury damage and increase productivity. A multi-stage vaporization system is employed wherein the last stage or lowest pressure heat exchanger is provided with a propane ejector. This allows the last stage heat exchanger to operate at a very low pressure without unduly reducing the pressure within other parts of the system. The last stage heat exchanger is accordingly able to sufficiently reduce the temperature of the feed to the aluminum heat exchanger to protect against mercury contamination. In addition, the decreased heat transfer load of the aluminum heat exchanger leads to an increase in the LNG production rate.

  • Patent number: 4813987
Abstract: The opportunity for mercury vapor, a common component of natural gas, to form a corrosive amalgam with the aluminum construction material of a cryogenic heat exchanger used in natural gas liquefaction operations is greatly minimized by cooling the mercury-containing gas to a temperature at or below the freezing point of mercury prior to introducing the gas to the heat exchanger.

  • Patent number: 4813986
Abstract: The deriming of the interior surfaces of cryogenic heat exchangers employed in the liquefaction of mercury-containing gases, in particular, natural gas, is accomplished by contacting the solids present upon the interior surfaces of the heat exchanger, usually as ice and hydrocarbonaceous materials, with a solvent or mixture of solvents at a temperature which is at or below the freezing point of mercury whereby solids will dissolve in the solvent and be removed from the interior surfaces of the heat exchanger and a substantial part of the mercury present within the heat exchanger will be in the solid state. In this way, the corrosive effects of elemental mercury vapor upon the heat exchanger, especially in the cases where aluminum is the material of construction, can be greatly lessened or minimized.
