  • Publication number: 20160012301
Abstract: A method and apparatus for the automatic recognition of gestures or visual signals made by non-motorized road users (pedestrians, cyclists, traffic police, crossing guards, horse riders, etc.) in the vicinity of a motor vehicle. Images recorded by a digital camera on-board the motor vehicle are analyzed to determine whether a person is directing a traffic-related visual message at the driver of the motor vehicle. Indicators of whether the person's message is directed at the driver include the person's head orientation, body orientation, and visual direction. If the message is directed at the driver, the content of the message is determined and the driver is informed of the content.

  • Publication number: 20150332671
Abstract: A device and a method for speech recognition, usable in a vehicle, with a processing unit for processing audio signals of a user on the basis of a user speech profile assigned to this user. The device is configured to store the user speech profile in an external memory assigned only to this user and located outside the processing unit, and to automatically retrieve the user speech profile stored in the external memory at each start-up of the device. The automatically retrieved user speech profile is communicated to the processing unit for use in the processing of future audio signals of the user.

  • Patent number: 9111450
Abstract: A method and system for parking assistance for a vehicle, wherein the parking of said vehicle on a parking space at least partly occupied by a second vehicle is enabled by transmitting a maneuver request to the second vehicle. The method includes the steps of: allocating a priority to the driver of the first vehicle, wherein said priority implements a classification of said driver with respect to the extent to which the driver is entitled to the prioritized use of the parking space; and transmitting the maneuver request to the second vehicle based on said priority.

  • Patent number: 9050935
Abstract: Various embodiments relating to driving behavior of a driver of a motor vehicle are disclosed. In one embodiment, a method may include assessing driving behavior of the driver according to a comparison of a current value of a coasting characteristic relative to a reference value. The current value may be determined during operation of the motor vehicle. The reference value of the coasting characteristic may be determined from operation of the motor vehicle during at least one past operating phase or another duration. The method further includes displaying a visualization representative of assessed driving behavior of the driver.

  • Publication number: 20150084759
Abstract: A system and method for notifying a driver who is leaving a stationary motor vehicle that there is still a person or an animal in the motor vehicle is presented. Exemplary notification modes include a notification mode in which the notification of the driver also depends on whether the current time falls in preset times; a notification mode in which the notification also depends on whether the motor vehicle is located within preset geographical areas; and a notification mode in which the notification also depends on whether preset or learned patterns of driver behavior have been detected.

  • Patent number: 8958969
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and a device for operating a motor vehicle with an internal combustion engine in a coasting operating mode in which the motor vehicle rolls essentially in a propulsionless fashion and essentially without a perceptible engine drag torque on an essentially level road if there is no propulsion request or braking request from a driver of the motor vehicle. According to the invention, the coasting operating mode is not brought about by automatically opening the drivetrain but rather is simulated with the clutch closed in that so much air/fuel mixture is fed to the internal combustion engine that the engine drag torque is largely but not completely compensated.

  • Publication number: 20150039213
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for autonomous movement of a parked motor vehicle out of a parking space in which it is blocking an entranceway to a facility such as private driveway. A method has the following steps: is parked in a blocking position blocking relative to an entranceway, detecting that a second vehicle requires passage through the entranceway, and operating a parking assistance system to autonomously remove the vehicle from the blocking position to permit passage of the second vehicle. The parking assistance system returns the vehicle to the original parking position after passage of the second vehicle through the entranceway is complete. The requirement for a second vehicle to pass through the entranceway may be detected using wireless vehicle-to-vehicle communication, or using a remote sensing system on-board the vehicle to detect the second vehicle.

  • Publication number: 20140350411
Abstract: A camera mounted in a motor vehicle cabin monitors an upper body and/or face of a vehicle occupant. A computer unit applies pattern recognition methods to compare an image from the camera with reference data stored in a database, and to determine based on the comparison that the occupant is experiencing neck discomfort. The neck discomfort determination is made based on the comparison indicating a change in occupant posture, a change in occupant facial expression, and/or a relaxation movement of the upper body and/or of a head of the occupant. If neck discomfort is detected, warm air and/or infrared light is directed toward the affected neck area to alleviate the discomfort.

  • Publication number: 20140309816
Abstract: A method and apparatus for modifying the configuration of a driving assistance system of a motor vehicle includes, during operation in an autopilot mode, detecting that a vehicle driver makes a control input counter to vehicle control directed by the driving assistance system. Data relating to driving conditions existing when the driver made the control input is logged onboard the vehicle and transmitted to an off-board central communications platform. The central communications platform creates a modified configuration for the driving assistance system based on the data and re-transmits it back to the vehicle where it is loaded into the driving assistance system. The modified configuration causes the driving assistance system to automatically control the vehicle in a manner consistent with the control input if the driving conditions reoccur. The modified configuration may also be transmitted to a driving assistance system of one or more other motor vehicles.

  • Publication number: 20140210638
Abstract: A method for monitoring at least one traction battery of a motor vehicle includes the steps of determining basic data for the prediction of a deeply discharged state of the at least one traction battery by a battery monitoring system associated with the motor vehicle, transmitting the basic data to an external computer via a first communications link, determining an expected point in time of the deep discharge by the external computer, and transmitting a first warning signal to a first monitoring instantiation of the motor vehicle that can be specified if the determined point in time of the deep discharge is reached apart from an early warning time. A device for monitoring at least one traction battery of a motor vehicle is also disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20140204211
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling access to a motor vehicle using heartbeat rhythm patterns. An electronic camera installed in or on the vehicle images a skin surface of a person seeking access to the vehicle. A chronological change in coloration or swelling of the imaged skin surface indicates the person's heartbeat rhythm, and this rhythm is compared to stored reference data of authorized persons. The person is allowed access if the detected rhythm corresponds to the reference data. The allowed access to the vehicle may be the unlocking and/or opening of a door and or the starting of an engine. The method is initiated if the door latch is actuated, if a person is recognized in the vicinity of the vehicle, or if a near field communication occurs, for example, by means of capacitive sensors. The electronic camera is preferably a LIDAR camera.

  • Publication number: 20140207535
Abstract: A system and method for demand-activated remote monitoring and/or control of motor vehicles via a radio data communication link with a coordination unit. The coordination unit is configured for conveying requests for remote monitoring and/or remote control of a motor vehicle and offers for performing the remote control from control terminals located remotely from the coordination unit. After acceptance of an offer by the vehicle, the coordination unit provides a data communication link between the motor vehicle and the control terminal over which the remote control and/or monitoring is performed.

  • Publication number: 20140197939
Abstract: A method for avoiding or reducing damage to a parked vehicle caused by a collision with an approaching vehicle performing a parking operation included determining, by the parked vehicle, a risk of collision, transmitting a warning signal if the risk of collision is sufficiently high, monitoring whether the approaching vehicle reacts to the warning signal, and performing a maneuver by the parked vehicle to avoid or reduce collision damage if there is no reaction. The maneuver may permit a controlled contact between the parked vehicle and the approaching vehicle to minimize the force of the contact. After such a controlled contact, a braking torque exerted by the parked vehicle is increased. Following completion of the damage avoidance maneuver, an estimate of the extent of the completed damage prevention is made and provided to the owner of the parked vehicle (including information about potential saved repair costs).
