  • Publication number: 20110029672
Abstract: An aspect of the present invention facilitates selecting suitable nodes to host virtual machines (VMs) in an environment containing a large number of nodes (such as a grid). In one embodiment, information indicating corresponding resources available in each machine node (a node capable of hosting VMs) in the grid is maintained distributed over a set of management nodes contained in the grid. On receiving an indication that a VM requiring a set of resources is sought to be hosted, a machine node having available the set of resources is identified based on the distributed information. The VM is then provisioned/hosted on the identified machine node. The maintenance of the resource availability information distributed across multiple management nodes enables the solution to be scaled for use in environments having a large number of nodes.

  • Publication number: 20110029969
Abstract: This disclosure describes, generally, methods and systems for implementing memory overcommit of virtual machines. The method includes establishing a plurality of virtual machines on a physical machine, broadcasting, from each of the plurality of virtual machines to a central scheduler, resource usage requirements, and then based at least in part on the resource usage requirements broadcasted from each of the plurality of virtual machines, determining a resource requirements schedule for each of the plurality of virtual machines. The method further includes receiving at least one resource request from at least one of the plurality of virtual machines, based on the resource requirements schedule, un-assigning resources from at least one of the plurality of virtual machines, and assigning the un-assigned resources to the at least one of the plurality of virtual machines which initiated the resource request.

  • Publication number: 20110025515
Abstract: The disclosure relates to a process of configuring a standalone self-supplied numeric controlled relay for providing phase and earth over current protection to electrical systems by accurate current measurement. The arrangement for current measurement with control algorithms is provided for power control by providing amplified and conditioned current for optimization between the current to power an electronic circuit and the fidelity of a measured current waveform so that they both are at the acceptable levels at the same time. This disclosure describes the current sensing and associated algorithm for power control in a truly self-powered relay.

  • Patent number: 7880243
Abstract: FET device structures are disclosed with the PFET and NFET devices having high-k dielectric gate insulators and metal containing gates. The metal layers of the gates in both the NFET and PFET devices have been fabricated from a single common metal layer. Due to the single common metal, device fabrication is simplified, requiring a reduced number of masks. Also, as a further consequence of using a single layer of metal for the gates of both type of devices, the terminal electrodes of NFETs and PFETs can be butted to each other in direct physical contact. Device thresholds are adjusted by the choice of the common metal material and oxygen exposure of the high-k dielectric. Threshold values are aimed for low power consumption device operation.

  • Patent number: 7881228
Abstract: A system and method for delivering multicast/broadcast data frames, originating in a service virtual local area network (S-VLAN), to a plurality of locations on a customer network is disclosed. In one embodiment, a method for delivering multicast/broadcast data frames includes analyzing ingress data frames, including customer virtual local area network identifiers (C-VIDs) associated with one or more divisions within one of a plurality of locations assigned by a customer network, received via incoming ports of each Ethernet switch associated with one of the plurality of locations and learning the C-VIDs of the ingress data frames, storing the learnt C-VIDs in the Ethernet switch, and forwarding the multicast/broadcast data frames to the one or more of the plurality of locations, via one or more outgoing ports of one or more of multiple Ethernet switches associated with the plurality of locations, based on the learnt and stored C-VIDs by each Ethernet switch.

  • Patent number: 7882135
Abstract: A system and method used to assess animal behavior includes a module having sensors that collects a variety of physical and biological data from a test subject. Interpretation of the data is provided to assess the test subject's behavior, neurology, biochemistry and physiology. The module is useful in observing the effects of a drug on the test animal and providing information on the drug's signature. Another advantage is the module's portability that allows it to be used in standard laboratory cages. This portability allows the animal to be tested in its own habitat, that can reduce any erroneous data due to stressing the animal when removed to a test cage. Additionally, the module's design allows for parallel data collection and interpretation from several laboratory animals undergoing different experiments. Multi-dimensional modeling of the test subject based the system's interpretation of the data allows pattern recognition of the drug signature, and predictive drug analysis.

  • Publication number: 20110022861
Abstract: According to an aspect of the present invention, nodes for hosting of new virtual machines (VM) are selected according to approaches designed to reduce power consumption in a grid. In an embodiment, the approaches are designed to facilitate the possibility of freeing one or more nodes from hosting VMs to power down the nodes, thereby reducing power consumption. Thus, an example approach is based on provisioning a new VM on a node which currently (immediately prior to provisioning) has the maximum resource consumption. Another example approach is based on provisioning a new VM on a node which currently has small-sized VMs in terms of resource requirements. In yet another embodiment, the approach is based on provisioning a new VM on a node located in a geographical area having low power tariffs.

  • Publication number: 20110022663
Abstract: A first queue stores messages to be consumed. A second queue temporarily stores completely duplicative messages that have message identifiers equal to message identifiers of messages currently being processed s and that have times equal to times of the messages being processed; processing of the completely duplicative messages never occurs. By comparison, a partially duplicative message has its processing delayed until the message of which it is partially duplicative has been finished being processed. A partially duplicative message has a message identifier equal to a message identifier of a message referenced within the non-persistent store and has a time unequal to a time of the message referenced within the non-persistent store is moved from the first to the second queue. A non-persistent store stores references to the messages currently being processed. Once the messages are finished being processed, the references to them are removed from the non-persistent store.

  • Publication number: 20110022788
Abstract: Data stored within symmetric and asymmetric memory components of main memory is integrated by identifying a first data as having access characteristics suitable for storing in an asymmetric memory component. The first data is included among a collection of data to be written to the asymmetric memory component. An amount of data is identified within the collection of data to be written to the asymmetric memory component. The amount of data is compared within the collection of data to a volume threshold to determine whether a block write to the asymmetric memory component is justified by the amount of data. If justified, the collection of data is loaded to the asymmetric memory component.

  • Publication number: 20110022342
Abstract: In summary, the invention relates to a device, a system, a method and a computer program for spectrum sensing. A detection procedure for detecting a signal of interest or an event by using a plurality of sensing devices capable of communicating with a central unit is proposed. The sensing devices can compute soft detection metrics and communicate this information to a central unit, where the information may be used to make a final detection decision using a certain specified rule. The signaling overhead of the proposed approach can be of the same order as that of a hard signaling approach. However, the proposed approach may achieve a better detection performance.

  • Publication number: 20110022856
Abstract: In accordance with one or more aspects, a key protector for a storage volume is created by generating an intermediate key and protecting, based at least in part on a public/private key pair, the intermediate key. A volume master key for encrypting and decrypting one or more volume encryption keys that are used to encrypt the storage volume can be encrypted in different manners, including being encrypted based at least in part on the intermediate key. A key protector for the storage volume is stored that includes both the encrypted volume master key and information indicating how to obtain the intermediate key. Subsequently, the key protector can be accessed and, based at least in part on a private key of the entity associated with the key protector, the intermediate key can be decrypted. The intermediate key can then be used to decrypt the volume master key.
