  • Publication number: 20050050928
Abstract: An electronic clutch assembly is for a lock system having a latch and first and second rotatable spindles, one being connected with the latch. A clutch is coupled with the first spindle, has a connective portion engageable with the second spindle, and is linearly displaceable along a first axis between a first position, where the connective portion is nonengaged with the second spindle and a second position where the connective portion is engaged with the second spindle. A cam is displaceable generally along a second axis extending generally perpendicularly with respect to the first axis and is configured to linearly displace the clutch between the two clutch positions. An electric actuator is operatively connected with the cam and configured to linearly displace the cam along the second axis such that the clutch alternatively couples the second spindle with the first spindle and uncouples the second spindle from the first spindle.

  • Publication number: 20050052432
Abstract: Disclosed are a method and a system for detecting multiple, simultaneous touches on a touch-sensitive screen of a computing device. The hardware that controls the touch screen performs two measurements to locate a touch location on the screen. If there is a single touch, then the two measurements are equal. A non-zero difference indicates multiple touches and is correlated with the spread of locations simultaneously touched on the screen. If the difference is greater than a set threshold, then an indication is given of multiple touches. The user is warned against multiple touches, and input from the screen is ignored as long as multiple touches are detected. For some embodiments, when multiple touches are detected, the invention also tries to indicate the boundary of the set of locations simultaneously touched. The boundary is used to interpolate the intended single touch from the locations of all the touches.

  • Publication number: 20030232078
Abstract: The present invention includes a formulation and controlled release dosage form that enable the controlled release of therapeutic agents showing reduced absorption in the lower gastrointestinal tract. The formulation of the present invention includes a therapeutic agent that exhibits greater absorption in the upper GI tract than in the lower GI tract and a permeation enhancer, which serves to increase absorption of the therapeutic agent in the lower GI tract. The formulation of the present invention further includes a carrier that allows the formulation to transition to a bioadhesive gel in-situ after the formulation is dispensed within the GI tract and has had some opportunity to reach the surface of the GI mucosal membrane. The bioadhesive gel formed by the formulation of the present invention works to present effective concentrations of both the therapeutic agent and the permeation enhancer at the surface of the GI mucosal membrane over a period.

  • Publication number: 20030217089
Abstract: A multiple task wait system and associated method allow a client application to wait for multiple tasks to be successfully or conditionally implemented before running subsequent tasks. Two mechanisms can be used to accomplish this multiple wait process: The first mechanism uses a multi-wait grouping process that is visible to the client, and the second mechanism uses a graphical representation to identify the tasks to be completed. The multi-wait grouping process allows a client to group a related set of tasks together for both control and documentation purposes. The client can add as many tasks as the resources of the computer allow to a group while defining the data flows and control flows between the tasks in the group using various graphical tools. The multi-wait system allows the client to define the constraints and conditions for a set of tasks to be considered complete, and further allows the system to define the constraints and conditions for considering all the tasks within the group to be completed.

  • Patent number: 6639058
Abstract: Beta-amyloid peptide (&bgr;A) is a major fibrillar component of neuritic plaques in Alzheimer's disease (AD) brains and is related to the pathogenesis of the disease. The present invention provides a method using Poly-L-Lysine to dissolve preformed &bgr;A fibrils in vitro. Its efficiency is instantaneous. Poly-L-Lysine offers the simplest and most effective way to dissolve preformed &bgr;A fibrils. The method of this present invention can be used as a universal dissolver of all types of oligomeric &bgr;-sheet conformation, precursor of the fibrils. Poly-L-Lysine may also be useful as a future universal therapeutic agent to prevent and/or retard amyloidogenesis in vivo AD and other types of amyloid related disorders.

  • Publication number: 20030198619
Abstract: The present invention includes a formulation and dosage form for enhancing the bioavailability of orally administered hydrophilic macromolecules. The formulation of the present invention includes a permeation enhancer, a hydrophilic macromolecule, and a carrier that exhibits in-situ gelling properties, such as a nonionic surfactant. The formulation of the present invention is delivered within the GI tract as a liquid having at least some affinity for the surface of the GI mucosal membrane. Once released, it is believed that the liquid formulation spreads across one or more areas of the surface of the GI mucosal membrane, where the carrier of the formulation then transitions into a bioadhesive gel in-situ.

  • Patent number: 6611602
Abstract: Noise is removed from the digitized output of a sensor, subject to undesired resonance, even when the resonant frequency is unknown or drifts, with sufficiently low phase delay for the sensor to be used in closed-loop control. A very narrow notch filter which removes the resonance-induced noise is recursive (IIR) and therefore has a low phase delay. However, the apparatus which determines the center frequency of the notch filter is non-recursive, and therefore stable. It includes a tunable FIR filter which tracks the same resonance that we wish the IIR filter to remove. Tuning the FIR filter to minimize the output of the FIR filter therefore tunes the notch frequency to align with the resonant frequency. The tuning parameter which adaptively produces this result is suitably scaled and biased, and is applied to the IIR filter.

  • Publication number: 20030049627
Abstract: The present invention concerns the development of a quantitative method for the molecular diagnosis of autosomal recessive spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) by measuring the amount of cytosolic mRNA from human muscle cells. Both the procedure using radioactive material and the Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) nonradioactive method were developed using 32P-dCTP labeled and biotinylated nucleotide probes. The results obtained demonstrate that the measurement of mRNA could be used as a quantitative method for the molecular diagnosis of SMA. There was a perfect concordance of the results obtained between the procedure using radioactive material, the ELISA method and the single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis regarding the negative and positive SMA samples.
