  • Patent number: 5823180
Abstract: This invention is a method for treating or preventing bronchoconstriction or reversible pulmonary vasoconstriction in a mammal, which method includes: a) causing the mammal to inhale a therapeutically effective amount of gaseous nitric oxide, and b) introducing into the mammal a therapeutically effective amount of phosphodiesterase inhibiting compounds; and an inhaler device (1) containing nitric oxide gas, and a phosphodiesterase inhibiting compound (106).
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 7, 1997
Date of Patent: October 20, 1998
    Assignee: The General Hospital Corporation
    Inventor: Warren M. Zapol
  • Patent number: 5570683
Abstract: A method for treating or preventing bronchoconstriction or reversible pulmonary vasoconstriction in a mammal, which method includes (a) causing the mammal to inhale a therapeutically-effective amount of gaseous nitric oxide and (b) introducing into the mammal a therapeutically-effective amount of a phosphodiesterase inhibiting compound; and an inhaler device containing nitric oxide gas and a phosphodiesterase inhibiting compound.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 1, 1994
Date of Patent: November 5, 1996
    Assignee: The General Hospital Corporation
    Inventor: Warren M. Zapol
  • Patent number: 5536241
Abstract: Methods and devices for using nitric oxide (NO) to decrease or prevent the contraction of a smooth muscle in a non-respiratory-tract organ of an animal, the organ being one which contains or is surrounded by a biological fluid which is not blood, which method includes the step of introducing an effective amount of NO into the fluid.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 24, 1993
Date of Patent: July 16, 1996
    Assignee: The General Hospital Corporation
    Inventor: Warren M. Zapol
  • Patent number: 5485827
Abstract: A method for treating or preventing bronchoconstriction or reversible pulmonary vasoconstriction in a mammal, which method includes causing the mammal to inhale a therapeutically-effective concentration of gaseous nitric oxide or a therapeutically-effective amount of a nitric oxide-releasing compound, and an inhaler device containing nitric oxide gas and/or a nitric oxide-releasing compound.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 10, 1995
Date of Patent: January 23, 1996
    Assignee: The General Hospital Corporation
Inventors: Warren M. Zapol, Claes Frostell
  • Patent number: 5396882
Abstract: A system for producing a mixture comprising nitric oxide and air for treatment of medical conditions. The invention enables unlimited production of nitric oxide at any location using only air and a source of electricity. An electric arc chamber 4 is provided with electrodes 5 separated by an air gap 9. An electric circuit 7 supplies a high voltage potential to the electrodes 5 and induces an electric arc discharge across the electrodes 5. The electric arc discharge produces nitric oxide mixed with air. The mixture of nitric oxide and air is further purified and blended with other gases and/or pulmonary therapeutic agents, and the therapeutically-effective gas mixture is delivered to different organs of a human body using organ specific attachments.
    Type: Grant
