  • Patent number: 6200034
Abstract: True-tilting pad of journal bearing has face with border region including engagement surface and defining pocket with generally longitudinal sidebars and a bottom. The pad has leading and trailing portions, with the face extending generally longitudinally therebetween. The leading and trailing portions can be positioned upstream and downstream, respectively, relative to rotation direction of rotatable shaft having convex surface. The pad is pivotally supported by (e.g., mechanical and/or hydrostatic) pivot and can cooperate with one or more other pads and fluid within housing to hydrodynamically and mechanically support the shaft. The pad tilts free of mechanical engagement with other pads. The leading portion can define an entrance to the pocket and the sidebars can converge along the rotation direction.

  • Patent number: 5562875
Abstract: An assembly and method for processing extrudate material containing curves or angles into a predetermined overall configuration, including having a die assembly for an extruder which assembly controls the cross-sectional shape or profile of the extrudate and selectively varies the path of the extrudate as it leaves the die assembly. A support member is provided which has a predetermined overall configuration and profile to receive the extrudate and maintain its configuration. A driving apparatus is also provided for continuously driving either the support member or the die assembly relative to the other while the extrudate is being received in the support member, and until the entire predetermined overall configuration has been completed. The path of the extrudate is variably directed by the die assembly as it leaves the extruder in coordination with the relative speeds involved to conform the extrudate configuration to the predetermined overall configuration of the support member.

  • Patent number: 5347129
Abstract: A radiation detection system determines the type of nuclear radiation received in a detector by producing a correlation value representative of the statistical cross correlation between the shape of the detector signal and pulse shape data previously stored in memory and characteristic of respective types of radiation. The correlation value is indicative of the type of radiation. The energy of the radiation is determined from the detector signal and is used to produce a spectrum of radiation energies according to radiation type for indicating the nature of the material producing the radiation.

  • Patent number: 5344443
Abstract: A heart pump having a housing with a central longitudinal axis, inlet means and an outlet means is disclosed. A stationary shaft extends axially within the housing and the means are provided for supporting the shaft centrally located within the housing. A stator assembly is mounted about the stationary shaft and a shell assembly is rotatable about the stator assembly and shaft. The shell assembly is located between the housing and stator assembly and includes a spiral ridge located on the outerside thereof for pumping blood through the housing between the housing and shell assembly as the shell assembly rotates. Rotor laminations are located on an innerside of the shell assembly. The rotor laminations have a plurality of axially extending permanent magnets therebetween which are circumferentially spaced about the stationary shaft. A damper winding means is mounted within the rotor laminations. Blood may flow between the shell assembly and housing without exposure to magnetic fields.

  • Patent number: 5159563
Abstract: The presence, size and location of a crack in a shaft is determined by comparing actual measured natural frequencies of the operating shaft system with the results of an analytical model. From a multi-station analytical model of an uncracked operating shaft system, natural frequencies and associated mode shapes are derived. A suspected axial location of a crack is defined, and a natural frequency of interest is selected which has an associated mode shape exhibiting significant localized bending at the suspected axial location of the crack and at a site of response measurement. The analytical model is modified to include a representation of an asymmetric crack at the suspected crack location. A predicted split and downward shift of a lateral natural frequency of interest as a function of crack depth and/or a predicted downward shift of a torsional natural frequency of interest as a function of crack depth is calculated from the modified model.
