  • Patent number: 6597503
Abstract: The present invention provides a reflection-type improved optical circulator. The reflection-type optical circulator includes at least one birefringent plate for receiving at least one signal light ray from a first port; and a mirror optically coupled to the at least one birefringent plate, where the mirror and the at least one birefringent plate causes the at least one signal light ray to be folded back upon itself, where the at least one signal light ray is directed to a second port. The optical circulator in accordance with the present invention is a reflection-type optical circulator, in which the paths of throughgoing light rays are folded back upon themselves. This minimizes the number of required optical elements and the resultant device size by using each optical element two times for each light ray.

  • Patent number: 6596500
Abstract: Disclosed are methods for inhibiting proliferation of a cell or inducing apoptosis. In general, the methods include the steps of providing an elevated level of M6P/IGF2R protein in the cell, and contacting the cell with a compound, e.g., a retinoid, that binds to the M6P/IGF2R protein. The methods can be used to inhibit proliferation of a cancer cell or induce apoptosis in a cancer cell. Also disclosed is a method for potentiating an M6P/IGF2R-mediated effect in a cell. Also disclosed are screening methods for identification of compounds that bind directly to the retinoic acid binding site of a M6P/IGF2R protein.

  • Publication number: 20030132159
Abstract: It is desired to remove matter on a fluid surface of a tank. The tank defines a circular tank orifice comprising a tank orifice rim, the tank orifice rim containing a fluid surface of a fluid, the fluid overflowing the tank orifice rim to form a fluid overflow, the fluid surface defining a fluid surface center. The matter is removed by discharging from near the tank orifice rim a plurality (n) of jets of the fluid towards the fluid surface center. Any matter on the fluid surface is thereby urged toward the tank orifice rim and eventually removed from the fluid surface by the fluid overflow. In one application, the tank comprises a dip tank and the fluid comprises photoreceptor coating solution or components thereof such as solvents, additives, or both.

  • Patent number: 6594364
Abstract: An adaptive noise rejection method and apparatus. An information signal having an information component and a repetitive noise component having a varying characteristic frequency is delayed the information signal by a reference delay time that is equal that is equal to a predetermined number of periods of the characteristic frequency to form a delayed information signal. The delayed information signal is subtracted from the information signal to form a processed information signal in which the information component is substantial and the noise component is negligible. The amplitude of the noise component of the processed information signal is constantly monitored. The delay of the information signal is varied as the characteristic frequency of the noise component changes so as to maintain the amplitude of the noise component of the processed information signal at a predetermined level.

  • Patent number: 6594148
Abstract: A high efficiency multi-directional airflow system for a telecommunications equipment assembly used for housing electronic apparatuses which facilitate telecommunications functionality. The equipment assembly defines an internal cavity which can be divided into a plurality of air flow channels. Each of the plurality of air flow channels captures a sub-portion of the overall volume provided by the internal cavity. The smaller volume flow channels provide a smaller cross-sectional area through which the majority of air travels. Since the cross-sectional area is smaller, the velocity of the air through the flow channels is increased. Since the air velocity is increased, the heat transfer coefficient is also increased, thus allowing for the more efficient removal of heat from the electronic apparatuses. A set of fan trays can include a plurality of fans each directionally positioned to work in series to cause air to flow through the plurality of flow channels.
