Patent number: 10782429Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for positron emission imaging to calibrate energy measurements of a pixilated gamma-ray detector using energy sharing events between channels of the detector. Due to conservation of energy, when the energy of a single gamma ray shared among multiple channels, the sum of measured energies across the respective channel must equal the original energy of the incident gamma ray. Further, the fractions of the original energy distributed to the respective channels can span the entire range of zero to the original energy. Thus, a single gamma-ray source (e.g., cesium isotope 137) can be used to continuously calibrate the nonlinear energy response of the detector over an entire range of interest.Type: GrantFiled: February 6, 2019Date of Patent: September 22, 2020Assignee: CANON MEDICAL SYSTEMS CORPORATIONInventors: Yi Qiang, Xiaoli Li, Kent C. Patent number: 10768318Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for positron emission imaging to correct a recorded energy of a detected gamma ray, when the gamma ray is scattered during detection. When scattering occurs, the energy of a single gamma ray can be distributed across multiple detector elements—a multi-channel detection. Nonlinearities in the detection process and charge/light sharing among adjacent channels can result in the summed energies from the multiple crystals of a multi-channel detection deviating from the energy that would be measured in single-channel detection absent scattering. This deviation is corrected by applying one or more correction factors (e.g., multiplicative or additive) that shifts the summed energies of multi-channel detections to agree with a known predefined energy (e.g., 511 keV). The correction factors can be stored in a look-up-table that is segmented to accommodate variations in the multi-channel energy shift based on the level of energy sharing.Type: GrantFiled: October 17, 2018Date of Patent: September 8, 2020Assignee: Canon Medical Systems CorporationInventors: Yi Qiang, Huini Du, Kent C. Patent number: 10451748Abstract: A method and an apparatus are provided for using a capacitor chain to perform charge sharing and Anger logic to determine, for charge pulses arising from gamma-ray detection, a row position along an array of scintillation-based gamma-ray detectors. Further, high-pass filters configured at the ends of the capacitor chain perform pulse shaping to preserve timing information. To determine the column position for charge pulses, a two-stage summing amplifier configuration is used with weighting amplifiers controlling the relative gain of the second-stage amplifier with respect to respective columns in the array. Each detector element in the array is a silicon photomultiplier (e.g., Geiger-mode avalanched photodiodes biased above breakdown voltage). Position information can be generated by Anger logic on four outputs from the second-stage amplifiers. Energy and timing information can be generated as a sum of the four outputs from the second-stage amplifiers.Type: GrantFiled: December 5, 2018Date of Patent: October 22, 2019Assignee: CANON MEDICAL SYSTEMS CORPORATIONInventors: Yi Qiang, Steve Ross, Peng Peng

Patent number: 10310098Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for positron emission imaging to correct a position at which a gamma ray was detected, when the gamma ray is scattered during detection. When Compton scattering occurs during detection of a gamma ray, the energy of the gamma ray deposited in multiple crystals in an array of detector elements. The corrected position is determined as a weighted sum of the position of the multiple crystals, each weighted by an inverse of the energy measured at the respective crystal. Further, the inverse-energy weight can be raised to a power p. A minimum energy threshold can be applied to determine the multiple crystals at which the gamma ray energy is deposited. The corrected position can be a floating position or can be rounded to a nearest crystal or to a nearest virtual sub-crystal.Type: GrantFiled: October 5, 2018Date of Patent: June 4, 2019Assignee: CANON MEDICAL SYSTEMS CORPORATIONInventors: Yi Qiang, Xiaoli Li, Evren Asma
