  • Publication number: 20080181344
Abstract: An approach is provided for supporting carrier synchronization in a digital broadcast and interactive system. A carrier synchronization module receives one or more signals representing a frame that includes one or more overhead fields (e.g., preamble and optional pilot blocks and one or multiple segments separated by pilot blocks). The module estimates carrier frequency and phase on a segment by segment basis and tracks frequency between segments. Carrier phase of the signal is estimated based upon the overhead field. Estimates carrier phase of random data field are determined based upon the estimated phase values from the overhead fields, and upon both the past and future data signals. Further, the frequency of the signal is estimated based upon the overhead fields and/or the random data field. The above arrangement is particularly suited to a digital satellite broadcast and interactive system.

  • Patent number: 7006568
Abstract: A video encoding/decoding system based on 3D wavelet decomposition and the human perceptual model is implemented. JND is applied in quantizer design to improve the subjective quality of compressed video. The 3D wavelet decomposition helps to remove spatial and temporal redundancy and provides scalability of video quality. In order to conceal the errors that may, occur under bad wireless channel conditions, a slicing method and a joint source channel coding scenario, that combines RCPC with CRC and utilizes the distortion information to allocate convolutional coding rates are proposed. A new subjective quality index based on JND is presented and used to evaluate the overall system performance at different signal to noise rations (SNR) and at different compression ratios. Due to the wide use of arithmetic coding (AC) in data compression, it is considered as a readily available unit in the video codec system for broadcasting.

  • Publication number: 20050032472
Abstract: An approach is provided estimating non-linear characteristics of an amplifier (such as a Travelling Wave Tube Amplifier) used to amplify a composite signal in a radio communication system. The composite signal, which includes a plurality of inbound signals overlay on an outbound signal, is sampled. The outbound signal is utilized as a training signal. Coarse estimates of the response of the amplifier is generated based on the samples of the composite signal and the training signal. Further, the interference associated with the inbound signals are removed from the estimation of the response of the amplifier by curve-fitting and estimating interference characteristics of the composite signal. An estimated response of the amplifier is thus output, and can be utilized to provide accurate non-linearity compensation and cancellation.

  • Patent number: 6760235
Abstract: Circuit and method for controlling circuitry in a power converter device during a soft-start process is provided. Synchronous rectifier control circuitry is adapted to gradually apply a gate drive signal derived from the main switch of the power converter device to a freewheeling synchronous rectifier of the switching circuitry during the soft-start process. The control circuitry gradually releases the amplitude or the pulse-width of the gate drive signal to the freewheeling synchronous rectifier to avoid a large duty ratio in the synchronous rectifier during start-up so that a negative current does not build up in the output inductor.

  • Patent number: 6711710
Abstract: An approach for identifying a particular carrier among a plurality of carriers in a satellite communication system is disclosed. A transmitter multiplies an encoded signal by a prescribed periodic sequence to form a watermarked signal and transmits the watermarked signal associated with a particular carrier over a communication channel. A receiver tunes to one of the carriers and extracts a data sequence from the one carrier. The receiver multiplies the data sequence with the prescribed periodic sequence to form another watermarked signal and determines whether the watermarked signals match.

  • Patent number: 6674658
Abstract: A power converter device using synchronous rectifiers and method for controlling operation thereof are provided. A first synchronous rectifier is coupled to the secondary transformer winding to pass a voltage induced at the secondary winding in response to an input voltage supplied to the primary transformer winding during an on-state of a main power switch. A first drive circuit is coupled to the gate terminal of the first synchronous rectifier to selectively activate and deactivate the first rectifier in correspondence with the respective on and off states of the main power switch based on a gate voltage supplied by the first drive circuit, with at least one circuit parameter being selected in the first drive circuit for maintaining the gate voltage within a predefined range regardless of variation in the level of the input voltage.
