    Abstract: Improved system and method of X-ray laser microscopy that combines information obtained from both X-ray diffraction and X-ray imaging methods. The sample is placed in an ultra-cold, ultra-low pressure vacuum chamber, and exposed to brief bursts of coherent X-ray illumination further concentrated using X-ray mirrors and pinhole collimation methods. Higher resolution data from a sample is obtained using hard X-ray lasers, such as free electron X-ray lasers, and X-ray diffraction methods. Lower resolution data from the same sample can be obtained using any of hard or soft X-ray laser sources, and X-ray imaging methods employing nanoscale etched zone plate technology. In some embodiments both diffraction and imaging data can be obtained simultaneously. Data from both sources are combined to create a more complete representation of the sample. Methods to further improve performance, such as concave or curved detectors, improved temperature control, and alternative X-ray optics are also disclosed.

    Abstract: A TAMR (thermal assisted magnetic recording) write head has a metal blocker formed against a distal end of a waveguide. The waveguide focuses optical radiation on an adjacent plasmon generator where it excites plasmon modes that heat the recording medium. Although the plasmon generator typically heats the recording medium using the plasmon near field to supply the required Joule heating, an unblocked waveguide would also send optical radiation to the medium and surrounding structures producing unwanted heating and device unreliability. The role of the blocker is to block the unwanted optical radiation and, thereby, to limit the heating to that supplied by the plasmon near field.

    Abstract: Bits per inch (BPI) is increased, and faster risetime is achieved while adjacent track erasure (ATE) is maintained at an acceptable level by inserting a 10-12 kG magnetic (TS0) layer between a 19-24 kG hot seed layer and 16-19 kG magnetic layer in a trailing shield structure at the ABS. A back portion (TY0) of the 10-12 kG magnetic layer is formed in a back gap connection between a back portion of the 16-19 kG magnetic layer and a trailing side of the main pole layer. A front side of the TY0 layer is 1-2 microns from the ABS and thereby improves BPI and writer speed. Accordingly, throat height in the write head may be reduced to less than 500 nm and thereby enables better bit error rate (BER). The TS0 layer is responsible for maintaining clean ATE near a far side of the writer track.

    Abstract: A perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) writer is disclosed wherein a hybrid side shield (hSS) has an inner 15-24 kG hot seed layer formed between a gap layer and an outer hSS layer to improve tracks per inch capability while maintaining acceptable adjacent track interference (ATI). The outer hSS layer has a magnetization saturation (Ms) value from 10-19 kG and less than that of the inner hot seed layer. The inner hot seed layer has a far side that is 100 to 500 nm from a center of the main pole and may be coplanar with the sidewalls of an overlying write gap and 19-24 kG trailing shield layer. As a result, the side shield return field is substantially improved over a full side shield made of 12-16 kG material. Meanwhile, the trailing shield return field is substantially the same to enable better area density capability (ADC).

    Abstract: A method of forming a TAMR (Thermal Assisted Magnetic Recording) write head that uses the energy of optical-laser excited plasmons to locally heat a magnetic recording medium and reduce its coercivity and magnetic anisotropy. The magnetic field of the write head is enhanced by the formation of a leading shield that is formed in a concave geometrical shape and partially surrounds the waveguide portion of the head within the concavity, which allows the distal end of the waveguide to extend to the ABS plane of the write head. This arrangement reduces the gap between the shield and the magnetic pole and does not interfere with the ability of the waveguide to efficiently transfer its optical energy to the plasmon generator and, ultimately, to the surface of the magnetic recording medium.

    Abstract: The discovery of distinct modes of asymmetric catalysis has the potential to rapidly advance chemists' ability to build enantioenriched molecules. As an example, the use of chiral cation salts as phase-transfer catalysts for anionic reagents has enabled a vast set of enantioselective transformations. A largely overlooked analogous mechanism wherein a chiral anionic catalyst brings a cationic species into solution is itself a powerful method. The concept is broadly applicable to a number of different reaction pathways, including to the enantioselective fluorocyclization of olefins, and dearomatization of aromatic systems with a cationic electrophile-transferring (e.g., fluorinating) agent and a chiral phosphate catalyst. The reactions proceed in high yield and stereoselectivity. The compounds and methods of the invention are of particular value, especially considering the scarcity of alternative approaches.
