  • Patent number: 8397241
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide language support for CPU-GPU platforms. In one embodiment, code can be flexibly executed on both the CPU and GPU. CPU code can offload a kernel to the GPU. That kernel may in turn call preexisting libraries on the CPU, or make other calls into CPU functions. This allows an application to be built without requiring the entire call chain to be recompiled. Additionally, in one embodiment data may be shared seamlessly between CPU and GPU. This includes sharing objects that may have virtual functions. Embodiments thus ensure the right virtual function gets invoked on the CPU or the GPU if a virtual function is called by either the CPU or GPU.

  • Publication number: 20130061240
Abstract: A computer system may comprise a computer platform and input-output devices. The computer platform may include a plurality of heterogeneous processors comprising a central processing unit (CPU) and a graphics processing unit) GPU, for example. The GPU may be coupled to a GPU compiler and a GPU linker/loader and the CPU may be coupled to a CPU compiler and a CPU linker/loader. The user may create a shared object in an object oriented language and the shared object may include virtual functions. The shared object may be fine grain partitioned between the heterogeneous processors. The GPU compiler may allocate the shared object to the CPU and may create a first and a second enabling path to allow the GPU to invoke virtual functions of the shared object. Thus, the shared object that may include virtual functions may be shared seamlessly between the CPU and the GPU.

  • Patent number: 8391353
Abstract: Apparatus and methods are described for encoding and decoding an enhancement layer. A deblocking filter is applied at the enhancement layer for bit depth scalability. The deblocking filter is adjusted to remove coding artifacts caused by local inverse tone mapping for intra-layer texture prediction for the bit depth scalability. The boundary strength of the deblocking filter is adjusted based on a threshold that, in turn, is based on a difference of inverse tone mapping parameters for a block and an adjacent block.

  • Patent number: 8369422
Abstract: Apparatus and methods are described for encoding and decoding image data for image blocks which form a picture by having a deblocking filter remove coding artifacts caused by local inverse tone mapping for intra-layer texture prediction for bit depth-scalability. A deblocking filter is applied at the enhancement layer for bit depth scalability. The deblocking filter is adjusted to remove coding artifacts caused by local inverse tone mapping for intra-layer texture prediction for the bit depth scalability. The boundary strength of the deblocking filter is adjusted based on a threshold that is based on a difference of inverse tone mapping parameters for the block and at least one adjacent block with respect to the block.

  • Patent number: 8306107
Abstract: This invention presents a scalable solution to encode the whole 12-bit raw video once to generate one bitstream that contains an H.264/AVC compatible base layer and a scalable enhancement layer. If an H.264/AVC decoder is available at the client end, only the base layer sub-bitstream is decoded and the decoded 8-bit video can be viewed on a conventional 8-bit display device; if the color bit depth scalable decoder is available at the client end, both the base layer and the enhancement layer sub-bitstreams will be decoded to obtain the 12-bit video and it can be viewed on a high quality display device that supports more than eight bit.

  • Patent number: 8295625
Abstract: Enhanced dynamic range requires more than 8 bit representation for single color components of pixels. For this purpose, normal color resolution images and high color resolution images are available. Backward compatibility can be achieved by a layered approach using a color enhancement layer, and a conventional image as color base layer. Both have same spatial and temporal resolution. Encoding of the color enhancement layer uses prediction and residual. A methods for optimized color enhancement prediction is disclosed. Color bit depth prediction is done by constructing a polynomial that approximates for all pixels of one color component of a block the color enhancement layer from the color base layer. A predicted version of the high color resolution image and a residual are generated and updated by a residual. The coefficients are compressed and added as metadata to the data stream.

  • Patent number: 8270468
Abstract: A scalable video bitstream may have an H.264/AVC compatible base layer (BL) and a scalable enhancement layer (EL), where scalability refers to color bit depth. The H.264/AVC scalability extension SVC provides also other types of scalability, e.g. spatial scalability where the number of pixels in BL and EL are different. According to the invention, BL information is upsampled (TUp,BDUp) in two logical steps in adaptive order, one being texture upsampling and the other being bit depth upsampling. Texture upsampling is a process that increases the number of pixels, and bit depth upsampling is a process that increases the number of values that each pixel can have, corresponding to the pixels color intensity. The upsampled BL data are used to predict the collocated EL. A prediction order indication is transferred so that the decoder can upsample BL information in the same manner as the encoder, wherein the upsampling refers to spatial and bit depth characteristics.

  • Patent number: 8218467
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for optimizing idle mode stand-by time in wireless device operable in a multicast system are disclosed. In order to maximize or optimize the stand-by time for idle mode, a time line for decoding of overhead information symbol (OIS) data received in one or more superframes in the wireless device. Based on the determined time line, an offset time period can be determined for setting an idle mode timer period used by the wireless device to decode the OIS information. By offsetting the timer period, a wireless device can be ensured to wake up and prepared to latch OIS information before the start of a superframe boundary, thus minimizing the wake up time of the device operating in an idle mode and, in turn, optimizing stand-by time.
