Patent number: 8425552Abstract: A method and apparatus for closing a vascular wound includes a guidewire and/or other surgical implement extending from the wound. A hemostatic material is advanced over the surgical implement and into contact with an area of the blood vessel surrounding the wound. The surgical implement is removed. Blood soaks the hemostatic material, and blood clotting is facilitated by the hemostatic agent within the material. A sealing layer of adhesive can be applied to the hemostatic material, confining the blood flow to the material. The vascular puncture wound is sealed by natural blood clot formation.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 2005Date of Patent: April 23, 2013Assignee: Loma Linda University Medical CenterInventors: Yong Hua Zhu, Wolff M. Kirsch

Publication number: 20120143246Abstract: A method and apparatus for closing a vascular wound includes an apparatus that can be threaded over a guidewire into place at or adjacent the wound. The apparatus includes a chamber that encloses a hemostatic material therein. When the apparatus is positioned adjacent the wound as desired, the hemostatic material is deployed from the chamber. A blocking member distal of the hemostatic material functions as a barrier to prevent the hemostatic material from entering the wound. Blood contacts the hemostatic material, and blood clotting preferably is facilitated by a hemostatic agent within the material. Thus, the vascular puncture wound is sealed by blood clot formation.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 1, 2011Publication date: June 7, 2012Applicant: Loma Linda University Medical CenterInventors: Yong Hua Zhu, Wolff M. Patent number: 8187627Abstract: A dressing delivery system comprises an applicator for holding and positioning a wound dressing. The applicator comprises a sleeve having a distal spreading portion. The wound dressing is disposed on or adjacent the spreading portion. The applicator urges the dressing into contact with the wound. The sleeve is advanced to actuate the spreading portion, which increases the diameter of the applicator and preferably deploys the dressing.Type: GrantFiled: September 7, 2004Date of Patent: May 29, 2012Assignee: Loma Linda University Medical CenterInventors: Yong Hua Zhu, Wolff M. Publication number: 20120093686Abstract: A microfibrillar high molecular weight chitosan-based textile can be used as a hemostat. The chitosan has been treated in a nitrogen field by applying energy to ionize nitrogen in and around the chitosan textile. A single or multiple such treatments may be employed. For example, the chitosan textile may be irradiated under nitrogen using ?-irradiation, treated under a nitrogen plasma, or both.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 24, 2010Publication date: April 19, 2012Inventors: Wolff M. Patent number: 7931628Abstract: A tissue closure device has an elongate body with a first portion and a second portion. A wound closure member is also provided. In operation, a wound closure member is releasably held on a distal end of the first portion. The wound closure member is advanced within the patient until it is placed on top of and over a wound in tissue. Flowable adhesive is injected through a lume of the second portion onto the wound closure member and tissue surrounding the wound closure member. The wound closure member applicator holds the wound closure member in place, allowing the adhesive to at least partially set. The applicator is then removed from the wound closure member. Thus, an adhesive wound closure member is attached to close an opening in tissue.Type: GrantFiled: July 7, 2003Date of Patent: April 26, 2011Assignee: Loma Linda University Medical CenterInventors: Yong Hua Zhu, Wolff M. Publication number: 20080142012Abstract: A breathing gas delivery system and method provides a flow of breathing gas to a patient. The gas flow is purposely interrupted for the patient's exhale phase in order to minimize irritation and injury to nasal tissues due to constant, uninterrupted flows. Embodiments include an oscillating ball valve that interrupts oxygen supply during the patient's exhale phase, cannula tips that are shaped to minimize trauma, and a sleep apnea treatment system that interrupts breathing gas supply during the patient's exhale phase.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 10, 2007Publication date: June 19, 2008Inventors: Albert W. Patent number: 6964675Abstract: An apparatus for facilitating the locating, everting, and closing of an opening in a blood vessel. The apparatus can include a closure instrument having an elongated member defining a longitudinal axis and proximal and distal ends. The elongated member has a vacuum lumen extending at least a portion of the length thereof for conveying a vacuum and terminating in a vacuum port adjacent the distal end of the elongated member. The distal end of the elongated member is dimensioned to be positioned proximal a vessel opening in a blood vessel whereby vessel edge portions defining the vessel opening are at least partially drawn toward the vacuum port in response to a vacuum conveyed through the vacuum lumen. At least one surgical clip is mounted adjacent the distal end of the elongated member and is adapted to be formed to an at least partially formed condition thereof.Type: GrantFiled: August 13, 2001Date of Patent: November 15, 2005Assignee: Loma Linda University Medical CenterInventors: Yong Hua Zhu, Wolff M. Patent number: 6763832Abstract: A nasal cannula is provided having a first and second nasal plug connected to a gas supply such as oxygen. A holder frictionally engages each nasal plug and a connector connects the two holders. The plugs are movable along the length of the connector to allow adjustment of the spacing between nasal plugs to accommodate a person's nostrils but with sufficient friction to retain the selected position. The plugs are rotatable around the longitudinal axis of the connector to adjust the orientation of the plug within a nostril relative to a patient's face, but with sufficient friction to retain the selected position. One of the connector or holder is removably fastened to the patient's face. A regulator is interposed in the gas supply to vary the flow rate and pressure to meet predetermined patterns.Type: GrantFiled: April 27, 2000Date of Patent: July 20, 2004Assignee: Loma Linda University Medical CenterInventors: Wolff M.
