    Abstract: A digital broadcasting system includes: a transmission stream generator multiplexing a normal stream and a turbo stream to generate a dual transmission stream; a transmitter inserting a supplementary reference signal (SRS) into the dual transmission stream, processing the turbo stream to reconstitute the dual transmission stream, and outputting the reconstituted dual transmission stream; and a receiver receiving the reconstituted dual transmission stream and decoding the normal stream and the turbo stream to restore normal stream data and turbo stream data. Thus, reception performance of a digital broadcasting signal can be efficiently improved.

The common broadcast receiver includes a synchronizer for receiving any one of a cable broadcast signal, a terrestrial broadcast signal, and a mobile broadcast signal including a training signal generated by a Deterministic Trellis Reset (DTR) and inserted in a data region, and synchronizing the received broadcast signal; and a signal detector for detecting any one of the cable broadcast signal, the terrestrial broadcast signal, and the mobile broadcast signal from the synchronized broadcast signal. Hence, the mobile broadcast signal can be received and processed in addition to the cable broadcast signal and the terrestrial broadcast signal.

Backwards compatibility is ensured by the careful design of the physical and link layers. Field tests are well underway now, being overseen by ATSC TSG/S9.

An apparatus for generating a transport stream includes a packet generator for generating a plurality of packets by compressing video and audio signals; a counter for counting the number of the generated packets and outputting the count result; and an information controller for determining whether the count result of counting reaches a predetermined number of packets, inserting packet start information into the packets according to the count result, and transmitting the packets with the packet start information inserted therein. The packet start information is added to a packet to be transmitted in a transmitter, and the packet start information is extracted from the received packet in a receiver, so that the waste of frequency resources can be reduced.
