Publication number: 20130022069Abstract: The present invention relates to the packaging of high power laser(s) in a surface mount technology (SMT) configuration at low-cost using wafer-scale processing. A reflective sidewall is used to redirect the output emission from edge-emitting lasers through an optical element (e.g., a diffuser, lens, etc.). A common electrical pad centered inside the package provides p-side connection to multiple laser diodes (i.e. for power scalability). Thick plating (e.g. 75 um to 125 um) with a heat and electrically conductive material, e.g. copper, on a raised bonding area of a substrate provides good heat dissipation and spreading to the substrate layer during operation. The composite CTE of the substrate layer, e.g. AlN, and the heat/electrical conductive plating, e.g. Cu, substantially matches well with the laser substrates, e.g. GaAs-based, without the requirement for an additional submount.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 20, 2012Publication date: January 24, 2013Inventors: Kong Weng Lee, James Yonghong Guo, Vincent V. Patent number: 8049894Abstract: A device and method of operation for analyzing signal features over multiple optical wavelengths is presented. A plurality of rotating thin film filters is arranged with respect to a collimated beam of light so that each thin film filter transmits light of a particular wavelength to a detector unit responsive to an angle of incidence of light upon the thin film filter when the thin film filter optically interposes the collimated light beam. Each of the plurality of thin film filters is optically interposed periodically and rotated so that the angle of incidence of light from the first input unit upon the thin film filter varies when the thin film filter is optically interposed to scan the light by wavelength within a selected wavelength band into a detector unit for measurement.Type: GrantFiled: October 5, 2007Date of Patent: November 1, 2011Assignee: Lightwaves 2020, Inc.Inventors: Jing Jong Pan, Zhengda Pang, Yonghong Guo

Patent number: 7536486Abstract: In accordance with certain aspects of the automatic protocol determination for portable devices supporting multiple protocols, a portable device detects which one of the multiple protocols is being used by the host device for subsequent communication with the portable device. This detection is based on the content of a command received from a host device. The detected protocol is then used by the portable device for subsequent communication with the host device. The host device may also send, to the portable device, a notification of which of the multiple protocols is being used by the host device.Type: GrantFiled: July 30, 2004Date of Patent: May 19, 2009Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Vladimir Sadovsky, Yonghong Guo, John C. Patent number: 7493420Abstract: Safe mode operation for portable devices supporting multiple protocols includes a portable device that supports multiple protocols, such as a base functionality protocol and an enhanced functionality protocol, reporting to a host device that the portable device supports only a single protocol (e.g., the base functionality protocol). This single protocol will be used for subsequent communication between the host device and the portable device. This reporting to the host device that the portable device supports only a single protocol can be triggered, for example, by an appropriate button(s) on the portable device being pressed when the portable device is powered on.Type: GrantFiled: September 1, 2004Date of Patent: February 17, 2009Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Vladimir Sadovsky, Yonghong Guo, John C. Patent number: 7315440Abstract: Methods and circuits for driving a coil-armature device are disclosed. The circuits are configured to drive the coil-armature device to a first energy level for a period of time sufficient to retract the armature to the center of the coil, and then, to drive the coil-armature device to a second energy level subsequently. The first energy level is greater than the second energy level. The second energy level may be achieved by alternatively connecting and disconnecting a driving voltage to the coil-armature device according to a “hold” mode duty cycle. The first energy level may be achieved by connecting the driving voltage to the coil-armature device continuously for a period of time sufficient to retract the armature to the center of the coil. Alternatively, the first energy level may be achieved by alternatively connecting and disconnecting the driving voltage to the coil-armature device according to a “pull-in” mode duty cycle, which is different from the “hold” mode duty cycle.Type: GrantFiled: December 9, 2003Date of Patent: January 1, 2008Assignee: Yazaki North America, Inc.Inventor: Sam Yonghong Guo

Patent number: 6801063Abstract: A circuit and method for electrically driving a load. A bootstrap driving circuit variably drives the load in response to a pulse width modulation control signal. A compensation curcuit then permits the bootstrap driving circuit to drive the load at a maximum power level when the pulse width modulation control signal has a sufficiently high enough duty cycle.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 2003Date of Patent: October 5, 2004Assignee: Yazaki North America, Inc.Inventor: Sam Yonghong Guo

Patent number: 6693394Abstract: A circuit regulates the flow of current to a bank of light emitting diodes (LEDs). The circuit is sensitive to ambient temperature and increases the voltage at the LEDs in the circuit. Consequently, the current flow to the LEDs will increase when the ambient temperature increases and the LEDs would, with a fixed current, begin to lose brightness. Consequently, the circuit allows LEDs to be used as lighting in applications, such as vehicle turn or brake signals, that experience wide ambient temperature variation but require that the LEDs remain sufficiently bright despite the temperature increases.Type: GrantFiled: January 25, 2002Date of Patent: February 17, 2004Assignee: Yazaki North America, Inc.Inventors: Sam Yonghong Guo, Kenneth John Russel

Patent number: 6683766Abstract: A circuit and method are disclosed for detecting an imminent arc prior to the ignition of the arc in a system having a DC power supply that provides power to a load through a conductor. The inventive circuit includes a current-change detector that detects a sudden drop in current through the conductor that is indicative of an imminent arc. Upon detection of a sudden drop in current through the conductor, a multivibrator generates a pulsed signal, wherein the width of the pulse is indicative of a determined period of time for which the power supply should be disconnected to prevent ignition of an arc. The pulsed signal controls a transistor, which selectively disconnects the power supply from the load for a determined period of time in response to the pulsed signal.Type: GrantFiled: February 11, 2002Date of Patent: January 27, 2004Assignee: Yazaki North-America, Inc.Inventors: Sam Yonghong Guo, James L. Jones, III, Ansel Strickland Dooley
