  • Patent number: 9318876
Abstract: Apparatus and methods are provided for a laser module with a base including stepped platforms with an offset relative to an adjacent platform, each stepped platform accommodating a laser source. The module has at least a first plurality of stepped platforms and a second plurality of stepped platforms. Each platform accommodates a laser source that is part of a plurality of laser sources. The plurality of laser sources is arranged in a single plane to have each laser source emit laser radiation in the same direction that is perpendicular to the single plane. Laser radiation generated by the laser sources associated with the first plurality of platforms is combined into a first combined beam of laser radiation and the laser radiation generated by the laser sources associated with the second plurality of platforms is combined into a second combined beam of laser radiation. The first and second combined beam of laser radiation are combined by an optical combiner and coupled into an optical fiber.

  • Publication number: 20150139263
Abstract: The disclosure relates to a pump radiation arrangement comprising: a pump radiation source for producing pump radiation, a means for stabilizing the wavelength of the pump radiation source and a laser-active medium through which the pump radiation passes in a bidirectional manner. The pump radiation arrangement also has a retro-reflector for reflecting pump radiation which is not absorbed by the laser-active medium back to the pump radiation source and a wavelength-selective element for preventing a wavelength destabilization of the pump radiation source by filtering out undesirable spectral portions of pump radiation which is not absorbed by the laser-active medium. The invention also relates to an associated method for pumping a laser-active medium.

  • Publication number: 20120066265
Abstract: A method, apparatus, and computer-readable medium for supporting multiple users working on a project includes a project server. Projects are divided into a plurality of revision units based on the type of each of the plurality of objects and the relationships between the plurality of objects. The division of the project into a plurality of revision units can be facilitated by determining that an object type of an object is included in a user defined list of objects to be designated root objects of a revision unit. Objects having an object type not included in the user defined list of objects to be designated as root objects are designated non-root objects and associated with a revision unit of a root object that the non-root object branches from. Projects divided into a plurality of revision units can be stored in a database in communication with the project server.

  • Patent number: 7437317
Abstract: According to an embodiment of the present invention, a web page can be dynamically created by a non-technical person. A technical person can set up a web page and incorporate marketing object containers. A non-technical person, such as a marketing person, then decides what marketing object to put into the various marketing object containers. Style templates, marketing campaigns, and various items associated with the campaigns may be used to create or change the web page. According to an embodiment of the present invention, these marketing object containers may be dynamically associated with different marketing object at different times.

  • Patent number: 7116874
Abstract: Enhancement of the supercontinuum generation performance of a highly-nonlinear optical fiber (HNLF) is accomplished by incorporating at least one Bragg grating structure in the HNLF. The Bragg grating results in reflecting a core-guided signal into signal which also remains core-guided. The supercontinuum radiation generated by such an arrangement will exhibit a substantial peak in its energy at the grating resonance of the Bragg grating and a region of increased radiation in a narrow wavelength band on the long wavelength side of the peak. A number of such Bragg gratings may be formed so as to “tailor” the enhancements provided in the supercontinuum radiation. Various, well-known Bragg grating modifications (tuning, chirped, blazed, etc.) may also be used in the inventive structure to enhance the generated supercontinuum.

  • Patent number: 5880840
Abstract: A method for measuring a surface recession of a magnetic recording head using a flying height tester. The recording head has a trailing edge portion that extends from an air bearing surface. The trailing edge portion contains the read/write elements of the recording head. Manufacturing processes typically create a recession in the trailing edge portion. The recession is measured by placing the slider adjacent to a rotating transparent substrate of a flying height tester. A light beam is then directed through the substrate and reflected off of the slider. The reflected light beam is detected to compute a flying height between the substrate and the point of reflection on the slider. The light beam is reflected off various points on the air bearing surface and the trailing edge portion to measure a number of different flying heights. The various flying heights are then used to compute the recession in the slider.

  • Patent number: 5710632
Abstract: A method and apparatus for measuring the flying height of a recording head that is separated from a rotating disk by an air bearing. The recording head has a trailing edge that extends from an interface of a substrate. The trailing edge has an embedded read/write element and an outer tip. The recording head is loaded into a flying height tester that can measure the distance between the disk and any point on the head. The flying height tester contains a transparent disk that is rotated to create an air bearing between the head and the disk. The outer tip is separated from the disk by an air bearing height h.sub.m. The read/write element is separated from the disk by an air bearing height h.sub.g. The substrate interface is separated from the disk by an air bearing height h.sub.i. The flying height tester measures the height h.sub.g to obtain the distance between the read/write element and the disk.

  • Patent number: 5675463
Abstract: A slider which has a totally reflective surface that can be used by an optical measuring system to measure the air bearing height of a head gimbal assembly ("HGA"). The slider has a rail with a recess area. The rail is coated with a first film that is thin enough to allow a light beam to transmit through the film and reflect from an interface within the slider. The recess contains a second film that does not transmit light so that a directed light beam is totally reflected from the second film. The outer air bearing surface of the first film is separated from the outer surface of the second film by a height H which is measured before the HGA is tested. The HGA is then placed adjacent to a rotating disk to create an air bearing with a height Hp. The outer surface of the second film is separated from the disk by a height Hv. An optical system directs a light beam into the recess to measure the height Hv between the disk and the outer surface of the second film.

  • Patent number: 5619331
Abstract: A monitor and method for monitoring the optical properties of a recording head of a hard disk drive. The monitor includes a light source that reflects a light beam off of the recording head. The reflected light beam is detected by a photodetector. The light beam directed onto the head has an intensity Ii. The light beam reflected from the head has an intensity Io. The photodetector and light source are coupled to a controller which calculates a reflectance R based on the ratio of the intensities Ii and Io. The reflectance R is a function of the optical properties of the recording head. The calculated reflectance R is compared with a threshold value. If the reflectance R exceeds the threshold value the monitor may provide a part fail message which indicates that the optical properties off a particular head deviates from a range of values. The present invention provides a means to quickly monitor the optical properties of recording heads without actually measuring the properties.

  • Patent number: 5453831
Abstract: A calibration standard for uniformly calibrating flying height testers. The calibration standard includes a wedge slider held in contact with a glass disc by a load bridge, load spring and cover case. The wedge slider has a first rail and a second rail extending along its length and has a raised end to form an optical wedge between the glass disc and the first and second rails. A profilometer is used to map any surface irregularities on the surfaces of the first and second rails facing the disc, allowing the calculation of an accurate expected distance, or flying height, between the surfaces and the disc at each horizontal location along the length of the wedge slider. The expected flying height is compared to a flying height measured through optical interference techniques to calibrate the flying height tester.
