  • Patent number: 6441555
Abstract: A spiral-like multi-turn coil excites a plasma for treating a workpiece in a vacuum plasma processor. In one embodiment two of the turns have a discontinuity. Each discontinuity has a capacitor connected across it. An RF source drives the coil via a matching network, an inductor connected to one coil excitation terminal and a capacitor connected to another coil excitation terminal. The impedances of the inductors and the capacitors at the RF source frequency and the discontinuity locations are such as to cause a standing wave voltage of the coil to have (1) equal and opposite values at the coil terminals, (2) sudden amplitude and slope changes, slope reversals and polarity reversals at each of the discontinuities, and (3) three gradual standing wave voltage polarity reversals, spaced from each other by 120°. Two of the gradual polarity reversals are azimuthally aligned with the discontinuities. In a second embodiment, one turn has a discontinuity having a series capacitor connected across it.

  • Patent number: 6256901
Abstract: A measuring tape comprises a housing in which a pivot is disposed for mounting a reel. A tape blade is releasably wound on the reel such that the tape blade can be pulled out of an opening of the housing. The bottom of the housing is provided with an action slot in which a stop member is slidably disposed. As the stop member is pushed forward, the press portions of the front end of the stop member and the urging portion of an arresting piece pivoted in the housing work together to prevent the rewinding of the tape blade. When the stop member is pushed backward, the arresting piece is pushed to swivel backward so as to move away from the tape blade, thereby enabling the tape blade to be rewound.

  • Patent number: 6173486
Abstract: A magnetic head includes first and second pole tips separated by a nonmagnetic gap layer. The right side walls of the first and second pole tips are vertically aligned. Similarly, the left side walls of the first and second pole tips are vertically aligned. The side fringing flux is substantially reduced resulting in a magnetic head capable of writing data tracks with well defined boundaries. The fabrication of the magnetic head begins with forming a stack of layers on a substrate. The stack of layers includes a nonmagnetic layer sandwiched between the first pole tip layer and a sacrificial layer which is preferably made of a metal. A protective layer, such as alumina, is then deposited over and around the stack of layers. After planarization and ion milling, the sacrificial layer is exposed. The sacrificial layer is then etched away leaving a volume of space in the protective layer and above the gap layer. An inductive coil with associated dielectric layers are then deposited above the first pole layer.

  • Patent number: 6169298
Abstract: A semiconductor light emitting device, such as the light emitting diode (LED) or the laser diode (LD), having a structure in which a light emitting area is a double heterostructure or a multi-layer quantum well structure. The light emitting area is formed on a substrate. Subsequently, an electrically conductive oxide layer as a transparent window layer to eliminate the crowding effect is formed on the light emitting area. The substrate layer consists of a GaAs substrate and a GaAsP layer to increasing the band gap energy of the substrate. The electrically conductive oxide layer is formed of AlZnO(x) material, having a lower electrical resistivity and a high transparency in the visible wavelength region. The window layer is formed using a physical vapor deposition or a metalorganic chemical vapor deposition.

  • Patent number: 6097041
Abstract: A light emitting diode includes a semiconductor substrate of a first conductivity type. A first electrode is formed on a part of the substrate. A reflection stack of the first conductivity type is formed on the substrate. An active layer is then formed on the reflection stack. An anti-reflection stack of a second conductivity type is grown on the active layer, and the anti-reflection stack consists of a plurality of layers, wherein each layer has a thickness of (m+1).lambda./2, where m is zero or a positive integer and .lambda. is a wavelength of radiation generated by the active layer. A window layer of the second conductivity type is formed on the anti-reflection stack. A second electrode is then formed on a part of the window layer.

  • Patent number: 5803696
Abstract: A safety interlock system and method of unloading a standard manufacturing cassette using a safety interlock system are described which prevent the robotic arm used to unload the cassettes from unloading the cassette unless the cassette is in the proper unloading position. The safety interlock system uses a light beam emitted by a light source and illuminating a light sensitive switch if the cassette is not in the proper unloading position. If the cassette is in the proper unloading position the cassette interrupts the light beam and the light sensitive switch is not illuminated. Illuminating the light sensitive switch energizes a relay primary coil which interrupts power delivered to the electrical control unit of the robotic arm and activates an alarm unit.
