Rocker arm having tubular stud mount

A Tubular mount system for a rocker arm which includes a rigid clamp at the base of the engine head is disclosed. Included is a pedestal mount/adjuster with external threads engageable with internal threads of the rocker arm whereby the rocker arm can be raised or lowered by turning the pedestal mount/adjuster. This eliminates the need for an adjuster stud and nut on the rocker arm and a pillow block to hold the device together.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0001] Valve last adjustment is required with respect to engine rocker arm systems. Conventional stud mount rocker arm systems are economical to produce but due to the point of claiming, are too flexible and weak. Shaft mount rocker systems provide a rigid mount but with the added expense of necessary pillow blocks. More importantly, the shaft mount system adds reciprocating weight to the end of the rocker arm, reciprocating weight being the enemy of valve train lash.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0002] Disclosed is a tubular mount system for a rocker arm which provides a rigid clamp at the base of the engine head without adding an adjuster stud and nut on the rocker arm. Likewise, pillow blocks are not necessary while the device is held together with the strength of a stud. This system results in a rigid clamp without extra reciprocating weight while at the same time, providing ease of valve last adjustment.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

[0006] FIG. 1 illustrates the rocker arm system 10 of the present invention. The system 10 is affixed to the engine head 11, as shown. The push rod 12 activates the rocker arm 13. The rocker arm 10 is affixed to the engine head 11 by the stud 14. The pedestal mount/adjuster 15 has external threads engageable with the internal diameter threads of the rocker arm 113. To effect an adjustment, the retaining nut 17 is loosened, the pedestal mount/adjuster 15 is turned, the external threads of which engage the internal threads of the rocker arm 13 to raise or lower the rocker arm 13.

[0007] The cross shaft 18 includes internal threads 20 which accept the external threads of the pedestal mount/adjuster 15 and a set screw 21 to lock the cross shaft 18 to the pedestal 15.

Claims

I. An adjustable rocker arm devise for an internal combustion engine including a push rod, tubular pedestal mount, stud and retaining nut, said device comprising.

II. A stud mounted on the head of the internal combustion engine, a rocker arm pivotable mounted on the stud and having an opening there through for receiving the pedestal mount;

One end of said rocker arm adapted for engagement with the push rod and having internal threads;
A pedestal mount/adjuster slidable over the stud and having external threads engageable with the internal threads of the rocker arm; the pedestal mount resting on the head of the internal combustion engine;
A retaining nut engageable with the stud and the end of the pedestal mount distal from the head of the internal combustion engine;
Whereby the pedestal mount/adjuster can be turned to raise or lower the rocker arm thereby providing valve lash adjustment.
