This invention was not made with Government support under. The Government does not have any rights in this invention.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

This invention relates to an assembly to hold and display items on a backpack.

There are patents for bags, such as Linday, U.S. Pat. No. 7,160,028

Backpacks, golf bags, and other bags are used by people of all ages, from pre-school children to professionals. Other bags used may be side bags with shoulder straps. Backpacks and other bags are used to carry books, hiking gear, exercise and athletic clothing and items, travel related goods, and concealed weapons.

There are many gadgets that people own, such as cellular phones, music players, wallets, personal data assistants, headsets, earphones, small video game playing devices, weapons, exercise gear, and others.

There is a need for an assembly and apparatus that allows people to carry many of the hand-held, small devices with backpacks and other bags. The present invention also provides an option to users of displaying decorative charms or other embellishments such as Velcro®-backed patches on their backpack. This function allows the user to personalize their backpack and other bags as a fashion statement.

The present invention is an accessory for use on strap-based items such as backpacks and golf bags. It is unlike the Crocs® backpack, which has fixed locations for the charms. The present invention offers a functional improvement over the Crocs® approach in that it does not limit the visibility of the charms that can be caused by differences in the “fit” of the backpack to the user's body because each person wears their backpacks differently depending upon personal preference as well as body type and build.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

The following detailed description is of the best currently contemplated modes of carrying out the invention. The description is not to be taken in a limiting sense, but is made merely for illustrating the general principles of the invention, since the scope of the invention is best defined by the appended claims.

Broadly, the present invention may be used to carry things on a strap of a product, such as a bag or a backpack in a variety and individually selected arrangements.

FIG. 1 is a first pictorial of the present invention 10. FIG. 1 illustrates the use of two of the present inventions 10 attached to two separate bag straps 500. The primary strap 20 may be secured to the bag strap 500 via a cross strap 80.

As illustrated in FIG. 1, the primary strap 20 on the left has a docking station 110 attached thereto via Velcro and Velcro mating material (not illustrated). Velcro mating material may be defined as any material that is removably attached to a Velcro surface. A docking station 110 is illustrated as being attached to the primary strap 20 on the left. The docking station 110 may be attached to the primary strap 20 on the left via Velcro and Velcro mating material. An item 85 is shown as attached to the docking station 110. The item 85 may be attached via a connection loop 114, as shown in FIG. 6. In one embodiment, the connection loop 114 may be disposed on one side of the docking station 110.

As illustrated in FIG. 1, a primary strap 20 is connected to the back pack strap 500 on the right. As illustrated, a secondary strap 70 may be removably secured to the primary strap 20. In one embodiment of the present invention the secondary strap 70 may be removably secured to the Velcro portion 35. The secondary strap 70 may have elastic properties to allow it to stretch. The secondary strap 70 may have holes 72, which can carry charms or other indicia. The holes 72 also allow the secondary strap 70 to be more flexible than it would be if it did not have holes 72. A cross strap 80 may be removably or permanently secured to the primary strap 20 and to a back pack strap 500, to hold the primary strap 20 to the back pack strap 500. A cross strap 80 may also be used to hold the other components of the present invention 10. For example a cross strap 80 may be used to hold a docking station 100 to a primary strap 20. A cross strap 80 may be secure a packet 90 to a primary strap 20. Items 85 may also be connected to the secondary strap 70 by using the holes 72.

The cross strap 80 may be removably secured to the Velcro strip 35, which may be disposed on the primary strap 20. The cross strap 80 may be used to secure the primary strap 20 to a strap of a backpack or luggage, as illustrated in FIG. 1 or 2.

FIG. 2 illustrates the primary strap 20, also referred to herein as a base strap 20 having a first surface 30 and a second surface 40. The first surface 30 may have a Velcro portion 35, or a Velcro strip 35. This Velcro portion 35 or Velcro strip 35 is also illustrated in FIG. 3. FIG. 2 also illustrates a clip aperture 50 may be disposed at one end of the primary strap 20. A clip 60 may be removably secured through the clip aperture 50. Indicia 100 or a label 100 may be disposed at an opposed end of the primary strap 20.

As shown in FIG. 3, the primary strap 20 may have indicia 100 at one end, and a clip aperture 50 at the other end. A clip 60 may be removably disposed through the clip aperture 50.

As illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2, more than one cross strap 80 may be used to removably secure the primary strap 20 to a backpack strap 500.

FIG. 4 illustrates the secondary strap 70. The secondary strap may have holes 72, to allow items 85 to be secured to the secondary strap 70 or tied through the holes 72. The secondary strap 70 is designed to carry decorative charms or items 85, which allow the user to personalize their bag or backpack. The secondary strap 70 can be located anywhere along the length of the primary strap 20.

FIG. 5 illustrates an embodiment of a packet 90 of the present invention 10. A packet 90 may be removably secured to the primary strap 20, as shown in FIG. 1. The packet 90 may be removably secured to the Velcro strip 35. The packet 90 may be capable of being removably secured to the Velcro strip 35. The packet 90 may have elastic properties so that it can compressibly contain a cell phone, PDA, portable music player, or other items 85. The packet 90 may be capable of being used in at least 2 different ways. First, the packet 90 may be used in any location along the length of a Velcro strip on the primary strap 20, as shown in FIG. 1, on the back pack strap 500 on the right. The packet 90 may also be attached to a belt via a packet clip 92, or it may have its own belt clip (not illustrated).

One feature of the present invention is the ability to configure the location of items on the face or first surface 30 of the primary strap 20. For example, one can quickly relocate the packet 90 high on the primary strap 20 near the shoulder area. Alternatively, one can relocate an item, or the pocket 90 near the bottom of the strap, or near the clip 60. This allows users to place their items 85 in a position that is most comfortable for them. It also provides enough room for users to carry more than one packet 90, or to secure several items with the secondary strap 70.

The present invention 10 may include two or more different embodiments of attaching the pouch 90 or item 90 or packet 90 (such as a small light source, lighter, and security spray such as mace) to the primary strap 20. One embodiment may include the capability of directly attaching the pouch or item 90 using Velcro®. Another embodiment may include the capability of using a docking station 110 approach as outlined below.

The docking station 110 which may allow the packet or pouch 90 to attach to the primary strap 20 or be worn on a belt using a standard belt clip via the docking station 110. In one embodiment of the present invention, a docking station clip portion 112 may be disposed at one end of the docking station 110. The docking station clip portion may be used to clip or removable attach the docking station 110 to something, such as a belt.

In one embodiment of the present invention, a connection loop 114, which may also be referred to as a belt loop 114, may be disposed on a side of the docking station 110 to allow the user to removably secure a variety of items that utilize a belt-clip mechanism. Examples of such items include, but are not limited to, certain cell phone pouches, personal safety pepper spray canisters, and personal music player pouches.

An item 85 may be connected to the connection loop 114, and then the docking station 100 may attach to the primary strap 20 using Velcro® and can be located anywhere along the surface of the primary strap 20.

A packet 90 or pouch 90 can be attached to the primary strap 20 via a Velcro mating material 74. Alternatively, the packet 90 may have a belt clip (no shown) to attach to the connection loop 114 of the docking station 110. In other words, the belt clip on the pouch 90 will be “hooked” or clipped onto the connection loop 114 of material on the docking station 110. The docking station 110 may also be used in conjunction with the primary strap 20 and cross straps 80 for carrying other small devices which can be removably secured (“hooked” or clipped) onto a loop of material. Examples of such devices include, but are not limited to, blinking LED safety lights, personal safety alarms, ID badge holders, and personal protection spray canisters.

The secondary strap 70, may also be referred to herein as a Freekz Charm Strip 70, and this can be used on any backpack strap in conjunction with the primary strap 20 and cross straps 80 and is designed to modify the functionality of an existing backpack that otherwise would not have the capability of displaying shoe charms or indicia 100.

The present invention 10 allows the user to move the Charm Strip 70 anywhere along the length of the backpack strap. In other words, the locations for the charms 100 are not permanently fixed in place. This functionality allows the user to position the charms 100 on the secondary strap or strip 70 in the optimal position to be viewed by others.

The present invention 10 may utilize hook-and-loop materials, such as Velcro® as the means of attaching to the primary strap 20, also referred to herein as a base strap 20. This allows the Freekz Charm Strip 70 to be quickly and easily removed from the backpack while at the same time allowing the Freekz base strap 20 to stay attached to the backpack. By allowing the Freekz Charm Strip, or secondary strap 70 to be removed, it can be interchanged with other Freekz Charm Strips 70 to display a greater variety of charms 100. This also allows a user to more easily store their charms 100 by keeping them grouped together within the Freekz Charm Strip 70.

The Freekz Charm Strip 70 may allow for the display of up to 8 or more charms 100 on the backpack strap.

In one embodiment, the present invention 10 may be sold as separate components, i.e. the primary strap 20, secondary strap 70, packet 90, cross straps 80, and clip 60 may be sold separately. In another embodiment, the above referenced components may be sold in one package.
