Description

Botanical denomination: Heuchera Hybrid.

Variety designation: ‘Electra’.

Cross Reference to sibling: Heuchera ‘Electric Lime’ (U.S. Plant patent application Ser. No. 12/653,633)

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Heuchera hybrid and given the cultivar name of ‘Electra’. Heuchera is in the family Saxifragaceae. Heuchera ‘Electra’ originated from a cross between Heuchera ‘Southern Comfort’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 20,364) as the seed parent, and Heuchera 426-2, a proprietary unreleased plant, as the pollen parent.

This new Heuchera is distinguished by:

    • 1. medium gold spring leaves,
    • 2. lime colored leaves with red veins in the summer and fall,
    • 3. amber to rust colored leaves with red veins in the winter,
    • 4. white flowers on a short flowering stem,
    • 5. a compact habit,
    • 6. excellent vigor, and
    • 7. excellent tolerance to heat and humidity.

This new cultivar has been reproduced only by asexual propagation (division and tissue culture). Each of the progeny exhibits identical characteristics to the original plant. Asexual propagation by division and tissue culture using standard micropropagation techniques with terminal and lateral shoots, as done in Canby, Oreg., shows that the foregoing characteristics and distinctions come true to form and are established and transmitted through succeeding propagations. The present invention has not been evaluated under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may change with variations in environment without a change in the genotype of the plant.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

FIG. 1 shows a one-year-old plant of Heuchera ‘Electra’ growing in a one gallon pot in the summer in Canby, Oreg.

FIG. 2 shows a one gallon size plant in bloom in May.

FIG. 3 shows the foliage winter color.

COMPARISON TO SIMILAR HEUCHERA

Compared to the seed parent, Heuchera ‘Southern Comfort’, the new hybrid has a smaller habit, shorter flower stems, and leaves that are gold to lime green with red veins rather than amber.

Compared to the pollen parent Heuchera 426-2, the new hybrid has larger leaves with stronger pubescence and lime to gold rather than green leaves.

Compared to Heuchera ‘Tiramisu’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 20,429) the new variety has bigger leaves with red veins summer, fall and winter, rather than a red pattern in spring and fall.

Compared to Heuchera ‘Electric Lime’ (U.S. Plant patent application Ser. No. 12/653,633), the new variety has smaller leaves, a compact habit, and more red in the veins.
