plant named ‘FAIRY GIRL’

A new and distinct cultivar of Hedychium plant named ‘FAIRY GIRL’ is disclosed characterized by robust plants with resistance to Pyricularia zingiberi (Ginger Blast). Inflorescences are dense and composed of attractive pale pink flowers with orange-red anthers. The new variety is useful as an ornamental plant in warm, wet climates.

Description

Latin name of the genus and species: Hedychium coronarium x simaoense.

Variety denomination: ‘FAIRY GIRL’.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The new cultivar, Hedychium ‘FAIRY GIRL’, is the product of a planned breeding program. The intent of the breeding program was to produce new ornamental ginger varieties for landscape purposes with improved resistance to diseases and pests in hot, wet climates. The new variety originated from a cross pollination of the seed parent, an unnamed, unpatented variety of Hedychium coronarium, with the pollen parent, an unnamed, unpatented variety of Hedychium simaoense. The cross pollination was made during March of 2004 in Guangzhou, China, at a research nursery. The new cultivar ‘FAIRY GIRL’ was selected in December of 2007 at the same location.

Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar ‘FAIRY GIRL’ was first performed by division in Guangzhou, China, at a research nursery May of 2008. Hedychium ‘FAIRY GIRL’ has since produced multiple generations and has shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The cultivar ‘FAIRY GIRL’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.

The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘FAIRY GIRL’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘FAIRY GIRL’ as a new and distinct Hedychium cultivar:

    • 1. Usefulness as landscape plant in warm and wet climates.
    • 2. Strong plants resistant to Pyricularia zingiberi (ginger blast).
    • 3. Ornamental flowers of pale pink with orange-red anthers.
    • 4. Abundant inflorescence production.

PARENTAL COMPARISONS

Plants of the new cultivar ‘FAIRY GIRL’ are similar to plants of the seed parent in most horticultural characteristics. However, plants of the new cultivar ‘FAIRY GIRL’ differ in the following:

    • 1. Plants of the new cultivar produce more inflorescences than plants of the seed parent.
    • 2. Inflorescences of the new cultivar are both longer and wider than inflorescences of the seed parent.
    • 3. In the new cultivar, the lateral staminodes are obovate; in the seed parent oblanceolate.

Plants of the new cultivar ‘FAIRY GIRL’ are similar to the pollen parent in most horticultural characteristics. However, plants of the new cultivar ‘FAIRY GIRL’ differ in the following:

    • 1. In the new cultivar, the-lateral staminodes are obovate; in the pollen parent oblong.
    • 2. The curl of the corolla lobes in the new cultivar is obvious; in the pollen parent inconspicuous.
    • 3. In the new cultivar the filament color is light pink; in the pollen parent darker purple-red.

COMMERCIAL COMPARISON

The new cultivar ‘FAIRY GIRL’ can be compared to the unnamed, unpatented variety of Hedychium coronarium found in the trade. Plants of the new cultivar ‘FAIRY GIRL’ differ in the following:

    • 1. Plants of Hedychium ‘FAIRY GIRL’ are taller than plants of Hedychium coronarium.
    • 2. Individual flowers of Hedychium ‘FAIRY GIRL’ are longer than flowers of Hedychium coronarium.
    • 3. Flower color of the new variety is a brighter orange-yellow than flower color of Hedychium coronarium.
    • 4. The new variety has a 50% higher uniformity of flowering than Hedychium coronarium.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS

The accompanying photographs illustrate in full color typical plants of ‘FAIRY GIRL’ grown outdoors, in the ground in Guangzhou, China. The photographs were taken using conventional techniques and equipment. While the colors in these photographs may display variances of color as compared to the living cultivar, due to LRV (light reflectance value), they are as accurate as possible using conventional photographic techniques. Colors in the photographs may appear to differ slightly from the color values cited in the botanical description, which accurately describe the colors of the new Hedychium plant. Temperatures ranged from approximately 18° to 30° C., night and day. No artificial light, photoperiodic treatments or chemical treatments were given to the plants.

FIG. 1 illustrates in full color typical of plants of Hedychium ‘FAIRY GIRL’ in the ground at approximately 18 months.

FIG. 2 illustrates in full color a typical inflorescence of Hedychium ‘FAIRY GIRL’.
