DETAILED DESCRIPTIONCatharanthus variety ‘CARZ0005’ disclosed in the present application has shown uniformity and stability, as described in the following section. Catharanthus variety ‘CARZ0005’ disclosed in the present application has been asexually reproduced by a sufficient number of generations with careful attention to uniformity of plant type and has been increased with continued observation for uniformity.
ORIGIN OF ‘CARZ0005’‘CARZ0005’ is a product of a planned breeding program. The new cultivar ‘CARZ0005’ has medium-toned coral pink colored flowers, excellent flower production, moderate plant size and uniform mounding and somewhat spreading habit with medium green foliage.
The variety ‘CARZ0005’ was derived through vegetative propagation from the parent plant designated as ‘CATFN1447-2’ (not patented). The parent plant resulted from a controlled self-pollination conducted in March 2019 in a controlled greenhouse environment in Gilroy, California. The parent plant exhibited distinctive characteristics including medium-sized flowers displaying medium-toned coral pink colored flowers and demonstrated a semi-cascade growth habit.
The seed was sown in March 2021 in a greenhouse in Gilroy, California. ‘CARZ0005’ was selected as a single flowering plant in September 2021.
The first act of asexual reproduction of ‘CARZ0005’ was accomplished when vegetative cuttings were propagated from the initial selection in January 2022 in a greenhouse in Gilroy, California.
Horticultural examination of plants grown from cuttings of the original plant in January 2022, in Gilroy, California, and continuing thereafter, has demonstrated that the combination of characteristics as herein disclosed for ‘CARZ0005’ are firmly fixed and are retained through successive generations of asexual reproduction.
‘CARZ0005’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary significantly with variations in environment such as temperature, light intensity, disease exposure, and day length.
A Plant Breeder's Right for this cultivar was applied for in Canada on Nov. 7, 2024, No. 24-11872. ‘CARZ0005’ has not been made publicly available prior to the effective filing date of this application, notwithstanding any disclosure that may have been made less than one year prior to the effective filing date of this application by the inventor or another who obtained ‘CARZ0005’ directly from the inventor.
The plant descriptions and measurements were taken in Gilroy, California in October 2025. The plants were approximately 40 weeks old and were growing in 4.5″ pots grown in a greenhouse.
