Latin name of the genus and species of the plant claimed: Scaevola aemula.
Varietal denomination: ‘SVAZ0010’.
BACKGROUND OF THE NEW PLANTThe present invention comprises a new Scaevola, botanically known as Scaevola aemula, and hereinafter referred to by the variety name ‘SVAZ0010’.
‘SVAZ0010’ is a product of a planned breeding program. The new cultivar has dark violet-blue flowers with white eyes, continuous and abundant flowering response, dark green foliage, a vigorous densely spreading growth habit with excellent branching and heat tolerance.
‘SVAZ0010’ originates from a hybridization in a field saran structure in August 2019 in Gilroy, California. The female parent was identified as ‘SCA-0161’ an unpatented proprietary breeding line having violet-blue flowers and a more open spreading plant habit. The male parent of ‘SVAZ0010’ is identified as ‘SCA14-0009-3’ having dark violet-blue flowers and a compact growth habit.
The resulting seeds were sown in March 2020 and ‘SVAZ0010’ was selected as one flowering plant within the progeny of the stated cross in August 2020 in a greenhouse in Gilroy, California.
The first act of asexual reproduction of ‘SVAZ0010’ was accomplished when vegetative cuttings were propagated from the initial selection in November 2020 in a controlled environment in Gilroy, California.
BRIEF SUMMARY OF INVENTIONHorticultural examination of plants grown from cuttings of the plant initiated in January 2021 in Gilroy, California, and continuing thereafter, has demonstrated that the combination of characteristics as herein disclosed for ‘SVAZ0010’ are firmly fixed and are retained through successive generations of asexual reproduction.
‘SVAZ0010’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary significantly with variations in environment such as temperature, light intensity and day length.
A Plant Breeder's Right for this cultivar has not yet been applied for. ‘SVAZ0010’ has not been made publicly available prior to the effective filing date of this application, notwithstanding any disclosure that may have been made less than one year prior to the effective filing date of this application by the inventor or another who obtained ‘SVAZ0010’ directly from the inventor. The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be basic characteristics of the new variety. The combination of these characteristics distinguishes this Scaevola as a new and distinct variety.
The accompanying photographic drawings show typical flower and foliage characteristics of ‘SVAZ0010’ with colors being as true as possible with an illustration of this type.
