  • Patent number: 4174640
Abstract: The invention contemplates an improved traction-drive transmission of the variety in which plural planet wheels are radially displaceable in orbital motion about an axially opposed pair of axially shiftable sun wheels and within an axially opposed pair of rotationally fixed reaction rings, said planet wheels having constant angular-contact with the wheels and rings of both pairs. An axially fixed pivotal reference between the sun wheels is used for linked connection of the sun wheels such that displacement of the respective sun wheels is always equal in magnitude but in opposite axial directions with respect to the axially fixed reference, thus assuring that the instantaneous radius of planet-wheel orbit between the sun wheel and reaction ring on one axial side of the fixed reference will at all times match the instantaneous radius of planet-wheel orbit between the sun wheel and reaction ring on the other axial side of the fixed reference.

  • Patent number: 4174658
Abstract: An improvement in a carton forming mechanism of the type wherein a mandrel is reciprocated through a die assembly to fold the side walls and tabs of an upwardly open carton assembly having perpendicular pairs of side walls. It is designed specifically for carton blanks having protruding tabs at the ends of both pairs of side walls, so that each side wall is overlapped by a bent tab when the carton is completed. The folding mechanism includes two opposed pairs of folding irons mounted about parallel spaced pivot axes. Each folding iron has an arcuate surface to fold a first carton wall relative to the bottom carton wall. It also includes a radial extension at the outermost edge of the arcuate surface for folding a first tab relative to the first wall. Radial spacing is provided on each folding iron between the arcuate surface and the shaft mounting it.

  • Patent number: 4174662
Abstract: An apparatus for forming elongated elements such as round bars, pipes and the like into a hexagonal bundle. Tiers containing appropriate numbers of elongated elements are deposited one upon the other in an assembly zone. The assembly zone is defined by a plurality of support surfaces, one of which is stationary, and the remainder of which are adjustable in relation to the stationary support surface in order to gradually impart a hexagonal cross section to the elements accumulating in the assembly zone. The completed assemblage of elements is then externally tied into a bundle in order to substantially retain the aforesaid hexagonal cross section after the bundle is removed from the assembly zone.

  • Patent number: 4174663
Abstract: A system for preventing the free fall of the platen of a vertical molding machine in the event of failure of the connection between the drive rod and the platen. A hydraulic network is employed to enable the movement of the platen. The network employs a counterbalancing circuit to permit raising the rod and platen and for preventing the gravitational fall of the rod and platen. The operation of this hydraulic circuit is controlled by valves which transfer the hydraulic fluid between the two ends of the respective cylinders, and a storage tank (to store the difference in volume between the rod end and cap end of the respective cylinders). With fluid flowing from the cap end of cylinders to the rod end of said cylinders, the platen may descend. With fluid remaining in the cylinders, the piston and platen cannot descend without the fluid being transferred back to the other end of said cylinder by operation of an electrically controlled valving arrangement.

  • Patent number: 4174666
Abstract: An inertial impact switch is provided having a housing which comprises two onductive sections electrically insulated from each other and a movable contact member engaging one section and held out of contact with the second section by means of a concentric insulating member. Interior radial "fingers" of the insulator bend in response to the spin forces of the projectile containing the switch. To provide for this sensitivity, the fingers of the insulator may have varying stiffness to provide deflection under differing spin conditions. The body of the switch may also be provided with a single grove bellows that is compressible under applied stress prior to use, moving the first section of the housing closer to the second section of the housing, thus reducing the gap between terminals.

  • Patent number: 4174668
Abstract: A working table or desk having a grating for vertical storage of material in elongated form, such as rolled blueprints. The table has a vertically directed opening with grating forming rods extending thereacross to form spaces for inserting rolled documents for storage. A container is positioned below the opening on the floor to receive the lower ends of the material. The opening has vertical surfaces having spaced horizontally directed holes therein. Each hole on each surface is in alignment with an opposite hole in an opposite surface to receive the rods forming the grating. One of each pair of oppositely aligned holes is deeper than the other to receive a coil spring. Each rod is inserted into a deeper hole to be in abutment with the spring, the spring being compressed to permit the entry of the rod across the opening and when so compressed the other end of the rod is within the opening and in position to be forced into the opposite hole by the bias of the spring. The spring thus holds each rod in place.
