  • Patent number: 4174681
Abstract: An electrical fuel injection system incorporates electromagnetic injectors wired in two groups and which are operated on alternate cycles during low speed and normal operation. With increasing power demands, the fuel injection computer supplies pulses of increasing length to keep the injectors open longer and supply more fuel to the engine. Two trains of timing pulses are initiated by reed switches operated by the distributor, and each is connected to a pair of latch circuits operative to provide timing pulses on one channel through gate devices to one set of injectors and to block pulses on a second channel to the other set of injectors. The subsequent signal from the other reed switch results in a timing pulse in the second channel. These timing pulses are supplied to the fuel injection computer to initiate the injection pulses and to AND gates which also receive the timing pulses.

  • Patent number: 4174682
Abstract: An electronic circuit is described for use with an existing fuel injection system in which fuel control pulses are generated on the basis of air flow rate, engine speed and exhaust gas composition. In particular, the existing fuel injection system is assumed to include an exhaust gas sensor with a signal integrator and a throttle position switch which indicates a closed throttle. It is also assumed that the fuel injection system shuts off fuel control pulses when the throttle is closed and engine speed drops below a predetermined value. The present circuit is intended to recognize this fuel shutoff and to set the integrator at an average value irrespective of the "too lean" signal which it receives from the exhaust gas sensor. In this way, upon termination of fuel shutoff, the engine will receive an average mixture rather than a highly enriched one.

  • Patent number: 4174683
Abstract: A variable expansion ratio internal combustion engine equipped with throttleless induction control and intake valve mechanism operable to induct an ambient pressure charge varying with load demand. Maximum compression pressure is preferably somewhat below that which produces combustion detonation. Constant compression ratio from idling through full load conditions is maintained by varying the clearance volume inversely with load demand. Charge induction at ambient pressure is provided with a throttleless carburetor and is manually controlled by a servo-power operator functioning to synchronize a linkage interconnecting the intake valve mechanism with mechanism for varying the cylinder clearance volume. This linkage operates to variably control closure of the intake valve during the intake stroke or, alternatively, to close the intake valve during the initial phase of the compression stroke.

  • Patent number: 4174688
Abstract: The engine for which the system provides ignition control produces a basic signal giving the time lapse of a predetermined angle of crankshaft rotation. Leading and trailing edges of this basic signal produce control signals. During the interval between these two a first counter stepped by clock pulses produces a count proportional to engine speed down to a certain relatively low engine speed beyond which overflow of the counter holds the counter at its maximum value. The count so determined is utilized in an ROM as the engine speed parameter which together with other engine operation parameters produce the address that selects the appropriate number to control computed ignition timing.

  • Patent number: 4174694
Abstract: A control system for the fuel injection mechanism of an internal combustion engine, especially a Diesel engine. In order to adapt the fuel admitted to the engine to exact requirements, a correction is made on the basis of air mass flow rate and fuel temperature. The air mass flow rate is deduced from signals generated by an air temperature sensor and an air pressure sensor while the fuel temperature is taken by a fuel temperature sensor. The two temperature signals are applied to a bridge circuit which feeds a differential amplifier whose output is mixed with the pressure signal. The composite mixed signal is applied to a servo-mechanism to limit the excursion of the fuel control rack of the fuel injection pump. Status indicators generate feedback signals for comparison with set-point signals to provide closed-loop control.

  • Patent number: 4174696
Abstract: A switch connected in series with the ignition coil is "on" and "off," respectively, in the presence and absence of a pulse furnished by a pulse generator operating in synchronism with the crankshaft of the engine. If the pulse width of the pulses is too small for the current in the ignition coil to reach the minimum value required for ignition, the closing time of the series switch is advanced, while if the pulse width is too long, causing excess heat dissipation in the coil, the closing time of the switch is retarded. To accomplish this, a first digital counter counts downwards for a predetermined time and upwards for a time period in which the current in the ignition coil exceeds a predetermined current. Upon interruption of the current in the coil, the then-present value in the first digital counter is transferred to a second digital counter. The second counter then counts down at a predetermined rate until a predetermined count is reached.

  • Patent number: 4174705
Abstract: In the illustrated embodiment, an electronic receiving gate is inserted between the image display device and the ultrasonic echo receiver so as to allow only echo impulses from a selected depth of field to pass through to the image display device. The depth selection is effected without any change in the line and image scanning rates by shifting the receiving gate between its transmitting and blocking states in the rhythm of the line sweep pulses and by adjusting the moment of emission of the ultrasonic pulses within the blocking phase of the receiving gate.

  • Patent number: 4174706
Abstract: A stimulator for causing involuntary mandibular closure. In a "test" mode a constant voltage is applied to left and right electrode circuits, and the currents through the electrode circuits are measured to determine electrode circuit conductivity. A first comparator circuit flashes respective "open" circuit warning lamps if the current through either of the electrodes is less than a preset value, and it flashes a "good" connection indicator lamp if the current through both electrodes is greater than the preset value. A second comparator circuit determines if the current through one electrode exceeds the current through the other electrode by a preset value, and flashes respective "low" current warning lamps in response thereto.

  • Patent number: 4174707
Abstract: In a system for measuring blood pressure and the like based on a sensed quantity representing the sum of pressure applied by a pressure cuff and a fluctuating component representative of the pulsatile pressure within the blood vessel method and apparatus for indicating blood pressure only if that pressure determined in a first preferred manner correlates substantially with a pressure determined in a secondary, different manner. More specifically, the sensed quantity is analyzed in a manner preferred for determining diastolic pressure and a manner preferred for determining systolic pressure, and the diastolic and systolic pressures or pressure ranges established by analyzing the sensed quantity in a secondary manner or manners. Examples of preferred and secondary techniques for diastolic and systolic pressure determinations are discussed.
