  • Patent number: 4231433
Abstract: Closely spaced cultivating tools are mounted along a tool bar and each tool may be locked in a raised position relative to the ground or may be lowered into floating engagement with the ground during use of the implement. A small tool bar is mounted parallel to a larger tool bar and the cultivating tools are slidably clamped on the small tool bar. Improved mounting structure allows each cultivating tool to be mounted on the small tool bar without having to slide each cultivating tool onto or off of the tool bar from the ends of the tool bar and without having to disassemble the mounting structure. The tool bar assembly includes row indicia for indicating where the tools are to be located along the tool bar and which tools should engage the ground and which tools should be raised away from the ground for various cultivating operations on row crops. A tool angling mechanism allows selective adjustment of the angle to the line of draft of each tool without the use of wrenches or other hand tools.

  • Patent number: 4231434
Abstract: A hydraulic impact device in which a hammer member having a piston portion is reciprocally disposed in a cylinder, a reciprocating sleeve valve is disposed within the cylinder and surrounds the hammer member. The sleeve valve has a first peripheral seal with an upper portion of the cylinder and a second peripheral seal with the lower portion of the cylinder so that an annular cavity is formed between the first and the second peripheral seals. The bottom portion of the sleeve valve forms a single seal with the upper portion of the piston section. A pressure relief valve is situated between the inlet to said annular cavity and an annular cavity below the piston portion to insure that the pressure in said annular cavity is greater than the pressure in the cavity below the piston portion and the sleeve valve thus effecting a sealing force between the sleeve valve and the upper face of the piston portion. An energy storage means is provided for receiving energy from said ram member during its upward stroke.

  • Patent number: 4231435
Abstract: A tool intended for use in conjunction with carrier machinery, primarily a rockbreaker, comprising two axially aligned elongated members, one of which may be introduced into the carrier machinery with one end and into a recess in the other (second) member with its other end. A third member surrounds the second member and is suspended by the carrier machinery. When the carrier machinery is in operation it impacts the engaging end of the first member, thereby impacting the second member, which may operate as a plunger for producing holes in the ground. The second member is driven into the ground in consequence of a series of short impacts of the carrier machinery on the first member. The second member is provided with means for engagement by the third member to enable the second member to be pulled out of the ground when the hole has the required depth.

  • Patent number: 4231436
Abstract: Drilling operations are run in a riser pipe, e.g., 20 inches in diameter, which extends from a ship to an anchored wellhead assembly on the ocean floor. Various strings of casing for lining the borehole wall are run down through the interior of the riser pipe. The first string of casing run is of relatively large diameter, e.g., 9-5/8 inches in diameter. Each successive string of casing which is run in this particular well is progressively smaller in diameter. Ideally, one would need a new and smaller riser in order to maintain about the same drilling fluid upward velocity. A high upward fluid velocity can be maintained by placing sleeve inserts in the annulus space between the drill string and the riser pipe interior wall. Additional strings of sleeves may be run inside the original sleeve to obtain a multiple effective sizing of the riser pipe.

  • Patent number: 4231438
Abstract: A drill bit is disclosed for maintaining a desired direction of drilling or to reduce the deviation already established. The drill bit includes a plurality of legs with each leg having a cone cutter rotatively supported thereon. A plurality of annular rows of cutting inserts are circumferentially mounted on the conical surface of each cutter. Each cone cutter further includes a heel portion adjacent the base of the conical surface. The heel portion is of sufficient mass to support the gage row of cutting elements. The gage row of each cone extends further out from the cone axis than any of the intermediate adjacent rows in such a manner that the annular area of the hole bottom cut by the gage inserts is lower than any other area cut by the intermediate rows of cutting inserts. This extended gage row construction enables the gage inserts to cut into any sloping wall to produce a sharp corner and bring the hole back into line with the drill string.

  • Patent number: 4231442
Abstract: An apparatus for braking a train of vehicles whereby a differentiated braking of the wheels is carried out by servo-mechanical means in such a manner that the rear wheels are the only ones activated directly by the driver during braking. The wheels of the immediately preceding vehicle are then activated in response to drawbar tension forces, and this applies all the way to the first of the train of vehicles. Thereby it is ensured that during braking a tension force is exerted throughout the whole of the train of vehicles, and in this way skidding and jackknifing or fishtailing of the train essentially can be prevented or avoided.

  • Patent number: 4231474
Abstract: A storage case, adapted to store a cassette of the type having at least one reel, is formed of walls which are closable to form the storage case. At least one hub engaging member is mounted on a wall for engaging the hub of the reel when the cassette is placed into the storage case. The hub engaging member includes a post extending from the wall and having a longitudinal slit therein parallel to the longitudinal axis of the post so as to form two compressible post portions, each portion having a finger projecting outward therefrom. A coil spring is positioned over and guided by the post, and a cap having a cylindrical wall, a top wall and an annular shoulder is positioned over the post. When assembling the cap to the post, the annular shoulder of the cap compresses the post portions to permit the fingers to pass through the annular shoulder and then to expand and lockingly engage the shoulder. The spring exerts an upward bias force on the cap.

  • Patent number: 4231478
Abstract: Method and apparatus for bulk sorting particulate material such as ore rocks. A conveyor belt carries the material in a continuous stream past a detector responsive to a required characteristic to produce a time sequence of detector signals dependent on degree to which material passing the detector possesses that characteristic. The material is projected from the downstream end of the conveyor belt into free flight trajectory and a deflector plate is moved across the face flight path so that material in some zones of the stream is deflected whereas material in other zones is not deflected. A control circuit monitors the detector signals and causes the deflector plate to move so that said zones are determined by the degree to which the material in them possesses the required characteristic.
