  • Patent number: 4240208
Abstract: A telescoping surveying rod carries on its upper end a laser beam sensor which reacts to a rotating laser beam of conventional type located at a distance. The sensor preferably has a vertical, triangular cross-section piece which supports on each face three solar cells, each cell emitting a signal when the beam strikes it, depending upon whether the sensor is at above or below level. The sensor is actuated throughout 360.degree. and hence need not be pointed at the beam source. An eye level readout device on the lowermost rod section has three lights which are illuminated depending upon which cell is energized. The rod is raised or lowered until the center light is illuminated, whereupon the rod marking indicates the distance below beam level of the foot of the rod.

  • Patent number: 4240209
Abstract: A grain dryer employs an auger assembly featuring a hollow auger shaft through which hot water is circulated to heat the auger flighting and thus the grain. The water emerging from the auger shaft is then used to heat atmospheric air supplied by a blower, which air is then injected into the grain through a set of ports along the auger housing. The injected air entrains moisture expelled from the grain by the hot auger and exits from the auger housing through another set of ports along the latter.

  • Patent number: 4240210
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for utilizing solar energy in a water and/or waste management system. At least one rotary chamber having a porous or perforated outer wall structure and an inner disposed filter is oriented within a drying structure having a transparent surface of substantial area for allowing solar radiation to be directed through the drying structure onto said rotary chamber. Water or waste material is directed into said rotary chamber, and free water drained therefrom, leaving a sludge like material within the interior of said rotary chamber. To effectuate drying, the rotary chamber is rotatively driven and solar energy in the form of heat is collected about the exterior of the rotary chamber and utilized to dry the interior sludge. At night and when available solar radiation is minimum, drying is achieved by conventional heating means.

  • Patent number: 4240213
Abstract: The present educational amusement device includes a horizontally pivoted balance arm and several pairs of matched game pieces. The game pieces of each pair include one which displays a non-verbal symbol and another one which displays the word for that symbol. The game pieces of each pair are equal in weight to each other but different in weight from the game pieces of every other pair. Therefore, the balance arm will assume a horizontal position only if two game pieces placed on it belong to the same pair. A downwardly extending front wall of the balance arm presents a window which registers with and fully uncovers a smiling face symbol on the pivotal support for the balance arm only when the balance arm is horizontal.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for packaging cans or similar objects having beaded rims in combination with planar carriers of polymeric materials is described. The cans are arrayed into groups corresponding to rim-engagingopenings or formations on the carriers by a conveyor and the cans are then positioned, aligned and firmly held with respect to the formations by cores inserted into the interstices within the array. The cores are actuated by the position of the conveyor belt via rails at specific stations. While the cores are holding the cans in alignment with respect to the carrier, the cans are inserted into the carriers by conveyor-actuated rams so that the beads on said rims engage the formations on the carriers. The carriers may include the rim-engaging formations along opposite faces.

  • Patent number: 4240240
Abstract: A method is provided for making a package having upper and lower foam cushion inserts which cooperate with each other to enclose an article therebetween which is placed in the package. The method includes the steps of forming convolutions in at least one surface of a piece of foam material to form a first foam insert, and then removing a section of convoluted foam material from the piece of foam material to form a cutout therein. Then, the removed section which forms the second foam insert is applied to one wall of a package with the unconvoluted surface thereof adhered to the wall, and the first foam insert is applied to an opposite wall of the package, with the second insert being in alignment with the cutout area of the first insert, whereby an article placed in the cutout area is cushioned between the foam material on the opposite walls of the package.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for making a reclosable package from a forming web, a covering web and a closure strip. The closure strip is indented at desired intervals and sealed at its lower surface to the forming web. A cavity is formed in the forming web after which a product is placed therein and covered with the covering web. After evacuating the space therebetween the covering and forming webs are sealed together with longitudinal and transverse seals which enclose the product and the closure strip. The upper surface of the closure strip is sealed to the covering web so that when the package is severed between the closure strip and an adjacent longitudinal seal, the closure strip may be opened for access to the product.

Abstract: A method of sterile capping a plurality of I.V. bottles with temporary sterile caps. A plurality of caps are provided in a single sterile package, which package is opened within the confines of a sterile working environment and the caps distributed face-up on a working surface. Packing caps are removed from I.V. bottles within the sterile environment and dilutant added to the bottles. The bottles are then sequentially inverted and press-fit into corresponding temporary caps to achieve a sterile sealing relationship between the bottles and caps. The described method results in a large savings of preparation time, produces less litter, and eliminates a bruised or "red" palm problem encountered in the prior art.

Parts are provided in the casings for installing reels into the reel holders and guide dies for passing wires. On a portion between the casings the rotor shaft is provided with through ducts. Adjacent the reel holders are electromagnets fixedly mounted for restraining the reel holders from rotating together with the shaft. This makes it possible to decrease the mass and reduce the dimensions of the machine, and to simplify the servicing thereof.

Abstract: A friction false twist device is of the type comprising three parallel shafts located at the corners of an equilateral triangle, and carrying rotationally symmetric friction elements. At least one of the shafts can be shifted in relation to the other shaft or shafts so as to open the device for threading. An additional shaft is arranged in relation to the three shafts carrying the friction elements so that, if connected by a line, the centers of the four shafts preferably would lie at the corners of a generally kite-shaped quadrilateral. Each of the four shafts carrys a whorl, the four whorls being drivingly interconnected by an endless belt of relatively minimum elasticity. At least one other shaft is coupled with said shiftable shaft for conjoint movement such that changes in the circumferential length of the quadrilateral caused by movement of the shiftably mounted shaft are substantially compensated by conjoint movement of the coupled shaft.
