  • Patent number: 4240299
Abstract: This disclosure describes a method and apparatus for using a single sensor to determine the relative velocity between an object and a fluid stream, the average temperature, pressure and/or density of the fluid stream, and thereby the mass flow of the fluid stream. Select properties of a signal, such as a sonic signal, directed through a vortex street are detected using modifications of existing single sensor vortex volumetric flowmeter methods and apparatus. The modifications facilitate the measurement of mass flow by measurements of the relative energy of the signal and the temperature of the fluid as ascertained from the time delay in signal passage from a signal directing means (43) to a signal receiving means (45).

  • Patent number: 4240330
Abstract: Servo boosters for vehicle hydraulic braking systems are described which incorporate a novel arrangement for providing an increasing reaction force on the input member in response to an increasing output force. In the novel arrangement a first thrust assembly is interposed between the input member and the output member, and a second thrust assembly is interposed between the movable wall of the booster, which may be a diaphragm or a piston, and the output member. The thrust assemblies each generally consist of rotatable parallel plates having inclined ramp surfaces on opposed faces co-operating with balls or rollers located between the plates. Some of the plates of the two thrust assemblies are keyed together. Axial forces between the members generate torques in the thrust assemblies and since the torques must balance each other as a result of the connections between the plates a fixed relationship is maintained between the input and output forces and the force exerted by the movable wall.

  • Patent number: 4240337
Abstract: Trays are erected from cardboard blanks by insertion of bent edge parts into slits in tongues, the extent of insertion dictating the carrying capacity of the resulting tray. The edge parts are bent with a double fold using mechanical fingers to give a wedge-shaped insertion structure for engagement with the slits in the tongues. To stiffen the blank and simplify insertion, side walls of the blank are first bent up by a bending tool and then subsequently insertion fingers are pivoted against the edge parts to form the double fold, and insert it into the slits of the tongues.

  • Patent number: 4240339
Abstract: In pressing cardboard waste material and the like into a bale, the waste material is fed into a housing containing a pair of conveyor belts with a portion of each conveyor belt spaced from the other and forming therebetween a press chamber. The portion of the conveyor belts forming the press chamber are each driven in a different direction and the waste material is fed into the press chamber by one of the conveyor belts. As the waste material is rolled into a bale by the oppositely moving portions of the conveyor belts, the portion of the conveyor belts move outwardly away from one another increasing the volume of the press chamber and accommodating the increasing size of the bale. When the bale is completed, it is wound with a cord-like member and then one of the conveyor belts is pivoted away from the completed bale so that the bale can be displaced from the housing.

  • Patent number: 4240340
Abstract: A pack comprising a plurality of superposed layers of unit loads and at least one strap encircling said plurality of superposed layers. The bottom layer of the pack has formed therein at least one elongated free space or channel extending in a direction parallel to the axis of the loop of said at least one strap and capable of accommodating the arms of the fork of a lift truck. The strap or straps have a low tension, but when the arms of the lift truck fork are upwardly engaged into the free spaces, the straps are tightened and firmly hold the load which can therefore be handled safely. The straps slacken when the pack is deposited on top of another pack, thereby allowing the upper pack to chocke itself onto the lower pack and thereby allowing to form columns of stacked packs with a greater number of packs and a higher degree of safety than with hitherto known packs.
