Abstract: A new and distinct variety of apple tree is provided which is believed to be a whole tree mutation or sport of the regular Haralson apple variety. The new variety is distinguished from the regular variety by the ability to form apples which (1) ripen earlier, (2) are more uniformly red in color with the absence of striping, (3) are resistant to russeting, and (4) are slightly sweeter in taste.
Abstract: A kalanchoe plant having the charcteristics of both a yellow color and a distinct lemon fragrance which is not known in other yellow kalanchoes, together with a tall growth habit of approximately 12 to 16 inches, the profusion of flowers on sturdy stems, with the further aspect of adaptability to year round flowering effected by photo period control, the flower color and form being maintained for relatively long periods of time even though growth takes place in a relative dark home environment.
Abstract: Filter tipped cigarettes are produced by dividing a continuous tobacco stream into alternate sections having respective lengths corresponding to a double cigarette filler and a double filter portion. The double filter portion sections are removed from the stream to leave spaced double filler sections which proceed to a position where double filter portions are inserted in the gaps left by the removed sections. The stream of alternating tobacco sections and filter portions is continuously wrapped and subsequently cut at the middles of the tobacco sections and filter portions to produce individual filter cigarettes. The sections of tobacco removed from the continuous stream may be returned to the stream.

Abstract: A steam curling iron is provided with an expansible mandrel carried on the main curling arm of the iron, the mandrel being constituted by a foraminous screen which can be wound and unwound by manually rotatable means to vary the diameter of the mandrel for different size curls. Steam generated within the curling arm is projected through perforations therein to the interior of the mandrel. Treatment liquid or water is metered in discrete quantities to the curling arm from a reservoir within a handle portion in accordance with the operation of a control button..Iadd.The invention also provides a valve system operated by a button for pumping metered quantities of liquid along the curling arm, and also provides a removable liquid reservoir located in a concealed portion of the handle beneath a closure. .Iaddend.
Abstract: The front wheel assembly of a wheel chair is dimensioned so that it will easily pass through the space between the seat of an automobile and the doorframe thereof. The rear wheel assembly is retractable upwardly under the seat portion to a position which permits the seat portion and the retracted rear wheel assembly to be set upon the automobile seat. The wheel chair and the person seated therein may be easily placed on the automobile seat and removed therefrom while the person remains seated in the wheel chair.
Abstract: A paper roll diameter sensing device for use with a paper splicing apparatus is disclosed which gives the output signal when the diameter of an unrolled paper roll is reduced to a predetermined diameter so that the running paper web may be spliced to the leading end of a new paper roll.
Abstract: A dual purpose coat capable of being worn or folded and inserted into the capelette of the coat for convenient storage during travel is disclosed. The coat includes a belt which may be used as an adjustable carrying strap for transporting the folded coat. A method for folding the coat is also disclosed.
Abstract: Disclosed is a personnel protective apparatus which includes a helmet and a full face shield attachable to the helmet. The helmet includes a facial opening having a resilient edge roll thereabout. The face shield has a resilient seal bonded thereto which includes a face sealing portion adapted to form a seal about the face and a helmet sealing portion adapted to engage the edge roll and form a seal about the facial opening. The face sealing portion includes a first inwardly directed pressure energized seal which engages the face and a second outwardly directed pressure energized seal to engage the face. The helmet sealing portion includes a channel formed to encircle the face shield and cooperate with the edge roll of the helmet to urge the second shield into better sealing engagement with the face.

Abstract: The invention contemplates intraocular lens configurations wherein a haptic element is secured to an optically-finished glass lens element and is particularly adapted for implantation in the anterior chamber of an eye and for stabilized central positioning solely through plural positioning contacts with the inner confines of the anterior chamber, at the angle of adjacency to the iris, commonly referred to as the anterior-chamber angle. All-glass configurations are described, wherein the haptic element is glass and is fused or otherwise secured to the lens element.
Abstract: The invention relates to anterior chamber implants of the type having a haptic with feet resting on the anterior surface of the iris. To enable the implant to be autoclaved, the optic is made of glass and the haptic is separately formed from an autoclavable inert material. Titanium and a polyethersulphone thermoplastic material are disclosed as suitable materials for the haptic.
Abstract: A toilet has first and second hinges equidistantly spaced on opposite sides of a medial plane of the toilet with each hinge including a vertical hinge post having a horizontal pivot hole receiving a tubular pivot sleeve extending unitarily from a cover hinge body member with a pivot shaft of a seat hinge extending into the pivot sleeve for pivotal movement. The seat hinge and cover hinge each have outwardly extending spikes inserted in mounting bores in the seat and cover with the spikes having protrusions for retention in the mounting bores and being oriented at an acute angle to and flaring outwardly in reverse manner with respect to the medial plane with the post and hinge components being formed of fiberglass reinforced polypropylene.
Abstract: A tool for use as a special wrench, flywheel puller, valve remover, and valve and valve seat grinder. The tool includes two rectangular bars of steel which may be bolted in one of two positions to either provide an extension handle when the tool is used as a special wrench or to provide a double thickness of steel when the tool is used as a flywheel puller. One of the bars carries a pair of angle iron sections which define therewith a C-shaped clamp, and a threaded bolt protrudes through one of the angle sections for compressing a valve spring when using the tool for removing a valve. The threaded bolt also includes a handle for turning the same which carries a rubber disc which may be removed and chucked in a speed drill to grind a valve or valve seat.
Abstract: A thread forming screw having a helical thread and a tapered lead-in section with a polygonal cross section is formed from a conventional blank by rolling the blank between a pair of thread rolling dies having means thereon to form alternating convex lobes and concave relief areas in the frusto-conical surface of the blank. Thus, the screw may be formed with a polygonally shaped threading end without a prior working of the blank's frusto-conical surface. Curved ramp surfaces smoothly interface the lobes and concavities to allow metal in a workpiece being threaded to roll into the concavities thereby reducing the torque needed to form a thread in the workpiece.
Abstract: In a pulling over and toe lasting machine, the pincers first grip the lasting margin above the wiping plane, whereafter the upper is tensioned about its last by upward movement of the last support, from an initial, lowered, position to a position in which the last bottom is in the wiping plane, and by downward movement of the pincers. The machine also comprises auxiliary means by which any wiper remaining in the wiping plane after the upper has been tensioned as aforesaid can be moved downwardly out of said plane so as not to impede the in-wiping movement of the wipers. When the auxiliary means is actuated, furthermore, the gripping force applied by the pincers to the upper is reduced to allow slippage of the upper in the pincers.
Abstract: A car washing means and method which includes; a paint-pad type holder and handle member having means for receiving and holding and pad member engaged there to, a pad member made and sized for use with the holder and handle member, and said pad member having a soft pliable sponge-like body portion, saturable with wash water upon being immersed in a pail thereof, with a more durable covering on the face and back edge thereof and including cut fibrous ends for longer lasting wash-wear life use thereof. And a wiper blade member provided on the holder for subsequent convenience and use.
