  • Patent number: 4315413
Abstract: A room air conditioner includes a variable speed eevaporator fan and a compressor selectively energized by a temperature control system. An ambient temperature sensor monitors the temperature of the room and an evaporator temperature sensor monitors the temperature of the evaporator. In an automatic mode of operation, the evaporator fan speed and compressor energization depend upon the difference between the ambient temperature and a set point temperature as determined by the position of a slide switch with multiple contacts each of which correspond to a stored set point value. The ambient and evaporator temperatures are determined by a linearization computation which utilizes a capacitor sequentially charged through the reference resistor and the ambient thermistor and the evaporator thermistor. The compressor is cycled off when the evaporator temperature falls below a certain value, and the compressor is held off for a fixed period of time after it has been de-energized to prevent short cycling or lockup.

  • Patent number: 4315429
Abstract: The method of determining the deformation characteristics of construction materials and soil includes placing a die of a predetermined diameter on a material being tested and subjecting this die to an increasing load. Owing to the deformation of the tested material, the die becomes displaced by a value equalling 0.03 to 10.0 diameters of the die. The displacement of the die is measured, whereafter the load applied to the die is relieved, and the displacement of the die due to the elasticity is measured. The disclosed method enables to reduce the cost of testing with the use of dies, as well as to reduce the cost of foundations, and to enhance the reliability of structures by using information on structural properties and the characteristics of soils.

  • Patent number: 4315435
Abstract: An ultrasonic scanner for use in medical diagnosis which produces two different types of scans. The scanner includes a housing carrying one or more ultrasonic transducers which traverse an arcuate path. A first reflector is positioned within the arcuate path to intercept ultrasonic waves and converge them at a point beneath the scanner in order to produce a skin centered sector scan, which is useful for viewing through small acoustic windows such as intercostal regions. A pair of reflectors, one of which is positioned horizontally with respect to the first reflector and the transducers, are utilized to form a wide aperture sector scan which diverges upon exiting the scanner housing. The wide aperture scan is useful for scanning spaces such as the abdomen which include relatively few obstructions.
