  • Patent number: 4343512
Abstract: Apparatus is disclosed for regulating the capacity of a tunnelling machine. The tunnelling machine is of the type having a rotatable cutting head mounted at one end of an arm. The other end of the arm is pivotally mounted on a carrier about a pivot pin whose axis extends transversely to the axis of the arm. A hydraulic rotary drive is provided for rotating the arm about the axis of the tunnel being formed. The regulation apparatus includes a regulator for regulating the rotary drive of the arm in dependence upon the capacity of the cutting head drive. An angle/current transducer is provided for measuring the angle between the axes of the arm and the tunnel. The regulation apparatus is such that the capacity of the cutting head drive decreases as said angle decreases, the reduction in capacity being effected by a reduction in the force applied by the cutting head to the working face.

  • Patent number: 4343513
Abstract: The method and power transmission system of this invention for driving a road planar machine has the cutter unit in a positive mechanical drive with the drive shaft of a machine power unit through a hydraulically actuated clutch mechanism. The wheel traction units for the machine are continuously driven from the power unit by hydraulic motors operated by variable volume displacement pumps. A control system for retaining the power unit at a set rotational speed required for a predetermined cutting or planing load is responsive to a drop in the set rotational speed, resulting from the cutting unit encountering an overload, to actuate the variable displacement pumps to decrease the forward speed of the machine without appreciably reducing the rotational inertia force of the cutting unit. If the cutting unit overload is of a short duration or momentary the set rotational speed of the power unit is resumed.

  • Patent number: 4343514
Abstract: A sonic generator produces a reciprocating force that is transmitted to a tool by a resonant or nonresonant force transmitting member having an output that reciprocates about a neutral position responsive to the force of the sonic generator. A continuous unidirectional force is applied to the sonic generator by a tool carrier. The tool advances intermittently along a work path through a medium responsive to the continuous unidirectional force and the reciprocating force. A gap is held between the neutral output position of the transmitting member and the tool when the tool is unable to advance through the medium responsive to the continuous unidirectional force and the reciprocating force. Specifically, the force of the sonic generator is sufficiently large relative to the unidirectional force to overcome the latter, and to drive the tool holder back away from the tool when the tool is unable to advance along the work path, thereby establishing a protective gap.

  • Patent number: 4343517
Abstract: A hydraulic braking system for agricultural tractor-trailer combinations, taking hydraulic power from a pump on the tractor. The system includes a pressure control valve movable by the main hydraulic service supply to connect the main supply with a chamber in communication with a restricted bore and an outlet for the by-passed braking fluid. A pilot valve responsive to braking pressure, or manually operable, admits fluid to the trailer brakes and operates a check-valve closing a connection between the chamber and a return line for fluid not required for braking. The check valve enables a clean switching action and eliminates any tendency to meter at some intermediate pressure. Both constant flow and constant pressure systems are described. The return line may be connected to a low pressure sink or to the flow at the services outlet port preferably via another check valve.

  • Patent number: 4343535
Abstract: Method of and apparatus for operating an electro-optical system for producing high quality images from a liquid crystal light valve.A polarized projection beam is directed to the reflective surface of a liquid crystal light valve for polarization modulation by means of an input image. The oscilloscope, together with a folded optical system, is mounted to move bidirectionally transversely of the film which itself is transported bidirectionally so as to enable multiple exposures of the oscilloscope in different arrays on the film. After exposure of a selected number of images, the exposed film section is cut and a previously disengaged transport mechanism drives the cut film section into a detachable cassette.

Abstract: A diaphragm control apparatus for combined use of an electronic flash with a camera includes a changeover switch which assumes different positions depending whether a flash photography utilizing a usual electronic flash, a flash photography utilizing a devoted electronic flash or normal photography is involved. The apparatus operates to produce a signal indicative of the use of a devoted electronic flash which predominates whenever the devoted electronic flash is mounted on the camera if the changeover switch assumes its position indicative of the use of a usual electronic flash, thus automatically establishing a diaphragm value in a camera which is associated with the devoted electronic flash.

  • Patent number: 4343545
Abstract: Apparatus for stopping the motor of a motor drive mechanism in a camera is disclosed. The motor drive mechanism is of the type in which the motor is started driving by a film winding start signal and is stopped by a signal obtained at the moment of a film winding end signal being produced. Apparatus for stopping the motor according to the invention comprises a timer circuit and means for detecting an abnormality. The timer circuit normally outputs a first signal after the generation of the film winding start signal and before the generation of the film winding end signal, and also outputs a second signal after the generation of the film winding end signal. If the film winding end signal is being generating at the time of output of the first signal or if the film winding end signal has not yet been produced at the time of output of the second signal, said abnormality detecting means delivers to the motor drive mechanism a signal for stopping the motor.

The removable, data storage media, is provided with a containing protective sleeve. When the removable media, contained within the protective sleeve, is inserted into the data storage file, the latch mechanism actively retains the removable media, allowing the independent withdrawal, from the data storage file, of the protective sleeve, leaving the removable media loaded in the data storage file. When the protective sleeve is re-inserted into the data storage file, so as to contain the removable media, already loaded in the data storage file, the latch mechanism lets go of the removable media, allowing the withdrawal, from the data storage file, of the removable media, contained in and together with the protective sleeve. The protective sleeve actively retaining the removable media, the removable media is within the protective sleeve at all times if it is not loaded in the data storage file.

Abstract: A combined sighting target and bracket adapted for receiving a reflector housing for use with electronic distance measuring instruments in surveying and other civil engineering applications. The unique structure permits adjustment of three parameters that render the present invention generally compatible for use in conjunction with virtually any kind of electronic distance measuring instrument. One such adjustment, namely, vertical displacement between a reflector housing and the sighting target, permits duplication of any offset distance that exists between a telescope and ranging optics of the remotely located measuring instrument. The other adjustment features include elevation and azimuth angle variations that permit orientation of the reflecting device to be virtually normal with respect to the incoming and reflected laser, infrared, or other such energy commonly used by such electronic distance measuring instruments.

Abstract: An improved nephelometer is disclosed comprising a cruciform housing having therein helical flow diverters for providing a helical water flow pattern so as to cleanse the inside of a sample tube. A regulated light beam is incident on the sample tube and sample. The transmitted portion of the light is measured and used in a feedback loop to control the incident bulb intensity and the scattered portion of the light is measured to provide a measure of the turbidity of the fluid under test. The housing of the nephelometer is a hermaphroditic molding of plastic so as to simplify construction and assembly. All parts mounted within the nephelometer are located by recesses molded into the two halves of the housing. Amplifier circuitry for the output of the scattered light detecting photosensor is disclosed, as is lamp regulator circuitry for feeding back the value of the transmitted light, so as to adjust the incident light, for ramping the bulb on and off and for keeping it in a low current condition.
