  • Patent number: 4493683
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing bag-like packages of flexible material, in which each package is so arranged as to have a number of closure ribbons (38, 48). A blank belt (1) which is essentially double-folded in its longitudinal direction is divided into a number of consecutive, bag-like packaging blanks (7). A number of closure ribbons (38a, b and 48a, b) extend through similarly located channels in all the packaging blanks. The ribbons are shortened in their longitudinal direction, for instance by folding. The blank belt is moved over guide devices (6a, b) which open the packaging blanks at the same time as the distance between their openings (32", 32"') increases. This causes drawing out of sections of the closure ribbons (38, 48) from the channels in the adjacent packaging blanks. The drawn-out closure ribbons are attached to each other in pairs and are cut off at the areas of attachment so as to form endless closure ribbons for each and every one of the packaging blanks.

Abstract: A double lumen cannula for hemodialysis and similar applications such as haemoperfusion comprises elongated flexible tubular members, disposed one within the other, for semi-permanent insertion into the sub-clavian vein of a patient, leaving semi-permanent access thereto for repeated hemodialysis treatments. The cannula is formed of an elongated flexible outer member, having a smooth exterior surface, and made up of an elongated main portion, a convergent, constricting portion and a narrower distal end portion which is tapered at the tip to fit over a Seldinger guide wire. There is also an inner member having a diameter substantially the same as that of the distal end portion. The inner member is insertable into the outer member to come into sealable engagement with the interior walls of the constricting portion, so as to form a continuous inner lumen with the distal end portion of the outer member, and is removable therefrom for removal of clot or replacement purposes.

  • Patent number: 4493697
Abstract: A dynamically augmenting pump system incorporates a sealed liquid-filled catheter which is inserted into a vessel such as an artery, and the pump system is operated in timed relation with the heart to aid the heart during episodes of impairment or failure of cardiac function by producing higher frequency pulsation or pressure waves within the blood during diastole and during the isometric contraction period of the heart. This frequency of pulsation is adjusted to the dynamic transmission characteristics of a selected circulatory subsystem, such as the coronary vascular system, to assure the transmission of a maximum of pulsatile energy into the subsystem. The catheter provides energy to maintain adequate blood flow through the healthy part of the myocardium and has a passage for injecting successive quantities of medication into the coronary arteries. The pump system also functions to penetrate the ischemic myocardial tissue with arterial blood and medication.

  • Patent number: 4493698
Abstract: A method is disclosed in which the suctioning of materials from a surgical zone, such as the human eye, is automatically controlled linearly by means of a pressure transducer continuously sensing the vacuum level of a debris receptacle (for collecting suctioned materials from the surgical zone) when material is being suctioned from the zone. The vacuum level in the debris receptacle is linearly varied when the vacuum level in the receptacle is either raised or lowered depending on the suctioning requirements from the surgical zone and whether or not the vacuum level in the receptacle is greater or lower than a previously determined and desirable vacuum level. The vacuum level of the receptacle may, in part, be controlled and varied, by means of a foot pedal operated by the surgeon.

  • Patent number: 4493703
Abstract: The drive piston of a hypodermic syringe is rendered non-retractable by including on it a resilient disc-like element whose free diameter is slightly larger than the diameter of the glass tubular body of the syringe. The drive piston is inserted into the glass tubular body from the rear end, thereby causing the resilient disc-like element to become dished with its concave side facing rearward. The dished resilient element acts as a continuous pawl since any attempt to retract the drive piston jams the edge of the resilient element against the inside wall of the tubular body.
