  • Patent number: 4493558
Abstract: A fuel system is described for homogenizing a liquid fuel component and a fresh water component by an adjustable emulsifying orifice. The downstream pressure of the homogenized fuel and water components at the suction side of a feed pump is monitored and controlled by a compensating valve which continuously and automatically adjusts the orifice size within the adjustable emulsifying orifice. The compensating valve is arranged in fluid communication with the suction side of the pump to be operative in response to changes in the pressure. The compensating valve is of the diaphragm type having an underlying piston provided with piston rings which prevent fluid communication between the suction side of the pump and its internal connecting assembly in the event of rupture of the diaphragm.

  • Patent number: 4493570
Abstract: In an impact printing apparatus including a carriage which carries a rotary type element, the length of time required for a motor drive system for the carriage stop hunting and stabilize at a desired printing position depends on variables including the distance the carriage was moved, character pitch and the like. The apparatus senses these variables and delays hammering of the type element for printing for a length of time calculated to reduce the displacement of the carriage from the desired printing position caused by hunting to an acceptable value while maximizing the effective printing speed.

  • Patent number: 4493571
Abstract: A printing mechanism includes a right-angle drive for imparting rotation to a rotary printing element having printing type thereon, rotation of the print element selecting a specific character to be imprinted on a printing medium. The right-angle drive permits the printing element to be moved transversely of the printing medium while receiving rotational mechanical signals for imparting the requisite rotation to the printing element. A shaft having a longitudinal keyway therein passes though a bevel gear of the right-angle drive, there being a key extending from the gear to the keyway to permit the sliding of the gear along the shaft while being controlled in rotation thereabout. A carriage carrying the rotary print element and the right-angle drive is driven in the transverse direction by a worm gear having a worm surface provided with inclined sides which mate with a pair of angled inclined rollers supported by the carriage for engagement with the worm gear.

  • Patent number: 4493572
Abstract: A long-life inking cassette is provided wherein an inkable ribbon is pumped into a ribbon storage zone by a pair of textured nip rollers. The ribbon is drawn from storage, rotated 180.degree., re-inked, and passed at an angle and under tension past a print head before being returned to the nip rollers. A pair of dams are positioned to contact opposed edges of the ribbon as the ribbon leaves the storage zone to prevent folds of the ink ribbon from passing outwardly from the storage zone. Means are provided to amplify the drag on the ribbon between a dispensing pin at the outlet of the storage zone and an end of a first leg of the cassette. The drag amplification causes the ribbon to be taut when drawn past the printhead.

  • Patent number: 4493574
Abstract: A dispenser package for flowable substances of the type where the flowable product is contained within a flexible pouch adhered to a relatively stiff material and may be opened along a fault line or cut pattern scored in the relatively stiff material with one hand by folding the stiff ends toward one another into a "V" shape containing one or more dimples, pyramidal shapes or other protrusions on the fault line or fault area. The protrusions not only increase and concentrate the stress forces, so that even very tough, high barrier materials may be used in constructing the package and will rupture at the protrusions by the aforesaid folding motion, but also control both the aperture shape and flow direction of the flowable substance as it is dispensed. The ability to make the package of tough materials enables the package to contain substances under pressure which subsequently will be dispensed.

  • Patent number: 4493586
Abstract: A rip-rap laying machine designed to lay approximately 270 tons of rip-rap per hour resembles a huge steel bridge frame. The self-propelled unit overlies an acutely angled bank of a waterway, channel, or canal and moves along the bank (40) to lay rip-rap uniformly. The machine uses two cable-controlled hoppers (34 and 36) mounted on rails (20 and 22). An operator rides with the feeder hopper (36) and controls a loading hopper (34) to run between a dump hopper (32) on one end of the bridge and the feeder hopper (36). The loading hopper (34) transfers rip-rap from a dump hopper (32) to the feeder hopper (36). The rip-rap is transferred from the feeder hopper (36) to a vibratory feeder (38), which vibrates the rip-rap onto deflector plate (44) before rolling gently onto sheets of filter cloth placed upon the bank (40). Uniform placement of the rip-rap on the bank (40) occurs as the vibratory feeder (38) travels from the bottom to the top of the bridge.

  • Patent number: 4493599
Abstract: A device for depalletizing tiers of articles and depositing said articles carried on a multi-tier pallet A onto a receiving table. The device includes an elevator clamp C which extends over the multi-tier pallet A and, upon being lowered to the top tier of articles, four spaced walls of the clamp are moved inwardly for gripping the bottles therebetween. The elevator is then raised with the top layer of articles and shifted forward over a receiving table E. The elevator with said articles are lowered for depositing the articles onto the receiving table. Prior to the articles being deposited on the receiving table E, side walls of the receiving table are moved apart so that the articles can be readily received therebetween. After the articles are deposited on the table E, the side walls are brought back together forcing the articles into alignment so that a wiper arm F can shift successive rows of articles onto a table top conveyor G.

  • Patent number: 4493600
Abstract: The movements of an oscillatory member, for example the charge distribution spout of a furnace charging system, are caused to follow the movements of a remotely located control device which may be in the form of an elongated arm. The spout and arm are rotatable about respective pairs of orthogonal axes and any angular deviations between the orientation of the control device arm and spout axis are sensed. Control signals commensurate with the angular deviations are delivered to fluidic actuators which reposition the spout.

  • Patent number: 4493601
Abstract: The forage receiving container box of a crop transporting vehicle has a shiftable top that may be closed down to compact the box for over-the-road travel without exceeding applicable roading height and width restrictions and may be projected up when the box is prepared for field operations whereby to expand the holding capacity of the box. When the box is rotated from its over-the-road position to its field-operating position, an unloading spout may be swung down from one lateral side of the box to come into alignment with the upwardly and outwardly inclined floor of the box whereby a conveyor extending along the floor and the spout may be utilized to unload the box on-the-go into a truck or trailer pulled alongside the moving box. Projecting up the top of the box or closing it down is coordinated with moving the box between its field-operating and over-the-road positions, particularly with respect to swinging of the unloading spout between its stowed and operating positions.

  • Patent number: 4493603
Abstract: The present wheel chair lift apparatus has a rotatable post at the front of a doorway in the side of a van. A pivotally mounted electric motor rotates this post through a pinion and gear drive at the lower end of the post. A carriage for the wheel chair lift platform is slidable up and down along this post. A vertical lead screw is coupled to the carriage through a ball nut and a lost-motion coupling. The lead screw is driven from an electric motor through gear wheels. The lead screw motor has an electric brake which prevents the screw from turning when the motor is stopped. The lift platform has a pivoted retainer lip at its outer edge which is pulled up before the lift platform can move up or down. Provisions are made for manually moving the platform in case of power failure.
