  • Patent number: 4493210
Abstract: An anti-block control system has four identically designed control channels. Safety circuits (8, 8') are also provided for monitoring the system, as are devices for testing the operability of the system. In this test, performed while the vehicle is stopped or when it is started, a test signal is fed into the channels and the effects of this signal are compared, in pairs, at locations of the controller corresponding to one another. A signal train is formed when the comparison is made. In accordance with the invention, two safety circuits (8, 8') are provided, each associated with a pair of channels, and the signals from all the channels are supplied, in pairs, to the safety circuits. The safety circuits include timing elements. During a test cycle, the signal trains in the two channel pairs generated by using the test signal are compared with one another by use of two comparator circuits (23, 23'), and in the case of non-agreement, a warning or switching signal (18, 18', 31) is generated.

  • Patent number: 4493211
Abstract: The invention relates to a smoke generator capable of emitting a very thin, laminar stream of smoke for use in high detail flow visualization. The generator is also capable of emitting a larger but less stable "rope" of smoke. The invention consists of a pressure supply 29, and fluid supply 28, which supply smoke generating fluid 25 to feed tube 22. Feed tube 22 is directly heated by electrical resistance from current supplied by power supply 30 and regulated by constant temperature controller 32. Smoke exit hole 21 is drilled in the wall of feed tube 22. Because feed tube 22 is heated both before and past exit hole 21, no condensation of smoke generating fluid occurs at the smoke exit hole, enabling the production of a very stable smoke filament 16. The generator is small in size, thereby avoiding wind turbulence in front of the test model 11.

  • Patent number: 4493212
Abstract: An optical sensing system for detecting a physical parameter such as acceleration, temperature or pressure through parameter induced motion of an optical element in a fiber optic path. The motion of the optical element varies the light transmission through the path in which the optical element defines the relationship between motion and alteration in light transmission. In one embodiment the optical element includes a focusing system between an input and an output optical fiber to result in an increase in sensitivity by enhancement of the effect of motion of the optical element of the amount of light transmitted to the output fiber. The optical element may include or be attached to a mass to provide acceleration sensitivity for use in geophysical exploration. In addition, the optical element can be adapted to provide acceleration sensitivity in one direction in combination with insensitivity to acceleration in an orthogonal direction of particular use in such geophysical exploration.

  • Patent number: 4493216
Abstract: Due to a different configuration of the ultrasonic beam as well as different signal gate adjustments, two different doppler signal collection regions (V.sub.m1, V.sub.p) of the flowing medium are selectable. To further develop the state of the art, without excessively increased technical outlay, at least the flow velocity (v) and/or the flow cross-sectional area (F) are to be measured, preferably simultaneously with the volume flow (Q), independently of the irradiation angle of the ultrasound into the flowing medium. This is achieved through selection of a third doppler signal collection region (V.sub.m2), power measurements (P.sub.m1, P.sub.p, P.sub.m2) from all three regions (V.sub.m1, V.sub.p, V.sub.m2) and the calculation from the powers together with additional known parameters of the signal collection regions such that, with cancellation of the angle-dependency, the respectively desired flow quantity (F, v, Q) directly results. A preferred implementation is for the purpose of diagnosis of blood flow.

  • Patent number: 4493219
Abstract: An energy conversion and transmission device is disclosed which, in its preferred embodiment, has a rigid substrate with a resistive area printed on its top surface, a spacer of non-conductive material with an aperture therethrough positioned in register with the rigid substrate resistive area, and a flexible substrate with a resistive area printed on its bottom surface in register with the aperture and the rigid substrate resistive area so that application of a force to the flexible substrate with an elastomeric actuator will move the flexible substrate resistive area to establish an electrical contact area with the rigid substrate resistive area, which electrical contact area increases and, thus, the resistivity of that area decreases as the applied force increases. Thus, when an electrical potential is applied across the two resistive areas, current flow through the two resistive areas increases as the applied force increases. Capacitive, inductive and other embodiments of the device are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4493229
Abstract: A method of forming an extrusion die comprises forming an extrusion aperture in a die piece, forcing a flowable material partly through the extrusion aperture so that the leading surface of the material becomes deformed in the extrusion direction, and then removing the exposed surface of the extrusion aperture, by chemical or electro-etching, so that the effective axial bearing depth of the extrusion aperture at any location around its periphery corresponds to the deformation of the leading surface of the flowable material at that location. The axial bearing depth of the completed die at any location is thus inversely proportional to the resistance to flow at that location, resulting in substantially uniform flow over the whole of the die aperture.

Abstract: A chuck actuator has a cylinder extending along a main axis and a piston axially displaceable in the cylinder, forming therein two compartments, and having an axially backwardly extending stem also centered on the axis and formed with two respective intake passages each having one end opening into the respective compartment and another end opening at a respective location on the stem. A connector rotatable about the axis on the stem is provided with respective fittings communicating with the locations. First and second axially spaced bearings prevent the connector from moving axially on the stem. Fluid is fed under pressure alternately to the fittings to pressurize and depressurize the respective compartments and thereby axially displace the piston in the cylinder. Normally the cylinder is connected to a chuck body and the piston to a chuck-actuating member for fluid actuation of the member.

  • Patent number: 4493244
Abstract: Pressurization of closing and opening chambers of a door operator is controlled by first and second magnet valves coupled to the source of air. These valves are alternately energized by a switching network, e.g., a flip-flop, when sequentially actuated to close and open the door. The second magnet valve is biased to its vent position but the first valve is operated to its vent position by air through a double check valve when the second magnet valve is energized. Emergency and choke valves are inserted in series in the air supply to the magnet valves and normally pass air without restriction. Operation of the emergency valve, e.g., door blocked, shuts off air from the magnet valves and diverts that air to inhibit all output from the switching network and, through the check valve in opposite position, to operate the first magnet valve to vent position. Door operation is halted in position.

Abstract: A rotary and linear actuating device is disclosed for imparting precision rotary and linear movement to an external member or assembly. In a preferred form of the invention a rotatable assembly is rotated about an axis within a housing by selectively varying the relative pressures of an actuating fluid in at least a pair of fluid pressure chambers defined by the housing, the rotatable assembly and at least a pair of vane members extending therebetween. An elongated shaft member is rotationally fixed relative to the rotatable assembly and is supported by at least a pair of linear bearing assemblies to allow linear movement of the elongated shaft member along said axis. The linear bearing assemblies remain a fixed axial distance from one another in order to adequately support heavy loads on the elongated shaft member and the external member or assembly attached thereto.

  • Patent number: 4493246
Abstract: A spring-applied, air-released parking/emergency brake is combined with an air-actuated service brake through a friction clutch between the parking/emergency brake piston and a first nut member that is threaded onto a screw rod of the service piston. The screw rod and service piston are connected through another friction clutch. The screw rod is provided with a second nut member that is integral with a thrust rod to which the brake rigging is connected. A friction lock slack adjuster arrangement limits retraction of the thrust rod during brake release in accordance with the desired brake shoe clearance to be maintained. When the thrust rod movement is inhibited by the slack adjuster, the service piston clutch becomes disengaged to permit rotation of the screw rod during the release stroke of the service piston corresponding to overtravel due to shoe wear. Brake shoe clearance is thus maintained constant.

  • Patent number: 4493248
Abstract: A storage system for large quantities of flowable, granular materials, such as grain. The material is covered by flexible cover sections which are spread out on an impervious support surface and thereafter laced together to define a cover having a centrally located opening. The cover is grasped in the region of the central opening and lifted to a predetermined fill height; the perimeter of the cover being free to pull inwardly as necessary accommodating the lifting. Thereafter, the granular product is introduced into the opening until it reaches the predetermined fill height and defines a pile extending downwardly toward the support surface along a natural angle of repose. As the pile grows, it raises the cover while sweeping it upward away from the center of the pile. By this means the entire finished pile is conformably covered by the cover.

Abstract: Apparatus and method for making large volumes of hot coffee wherein soluble coffee (i.e. freeze-dried or other instant coffee) is mixed with a relatively small stream of cool or cold water and the resulting mixture is sucked into a relatively large stream of hot water by jet action. The dry soluble coffee in the form of powder, crystals or flakes is metered by an auger from the bottom of a hopper through a discharge nozzle and falls into a mixing bowl wherein the cool or cold water is flowing in the form of a vortex. The cool or cold water spirals down the sides of the bowl in the form of a water curtain which wets and sweeps the interior surface of the mixing chamber thereby preventing buildup of soluble coffee solids thereon and inside the mixing chamber.
