  • Patent number: 4554794
Abstract: A spring support clip is provided for mounting a condensate collection receptacle adjustably pivotally relative to an upright wall on a dehumidifier. The support clip has a free end cooperating with the receptacle and is configured to be readily deflectable vertically but more resistant to deformation in other than the vertical direction. The spring support clip is arranged to simultaneously support and guidingly control pivoting movement of the receptacle occasioned by an increase in the condensate accumulation. A shut-off switch is operated depending upon the orientation of the receptacle as dictated by the condensate level.

  • Patent number: 4554817
Abstract: An apparatus is provided to shape the edges of flow control grooves in a valve sleeve. The apparatus includes a plurality of groove edge shaping tools which are pivotally supported in a circular array. A valve sleeve is telescoped over working end portions of the tools. • Patent number: 4554823
Abstract: A method for determining the burning rate of a propellant. The method involves the single firing of a subscale, propellant motor that has been modified so that the propellant motor has a tapered cylindrical port that produces a non-neutral pressure-time trace when burned. The pressure-time trace is initially progressive (pressure increases with time), and then regressive (pressure decreases with time). Unlike conventional motors, this motor operates over a range of burning rates; therefore, the burning rate behavior of the propellant can be characterized with a single motor firing. The burning rate of the propellant is extracted from the motor pressure-time history by a computer analysis package. The analysis package employs an optimization program which uses an internal ballistics model of the motor. The ballistics model is used to generate a theoretical pressure-time trace which can be compared with the digitized output signal from the actual motor.

  • Patent number: 4554830
Abstract: The head for the hydrostatic detection of a liquid level includes a main enclosure which is divided by a membrane into two chambers, one of which communicates with a supply of air under pressure, while the other is joined to a probe that is immersed deeply into the liquid. That connection is made, in this case, by the intermediary of an auxiliary enclosure that also contains a primary chamber that communicates with the inlet of the air under pressure, and a secondary chamber which is separated from the primary chamber by a membrane. That membrane forms one piece with a valve mounted between the chamber and a small connecting conduit connected with a probe, which prevents any ill-timed rise of the liquid inside the device, in the case of the disappearance of the compressed-air supply, and which makes it possible, at the same time, to install the detector head above the tank.

  • Patent number: 4554831
Abstract: The invention relates to (1) an arrangement and (2) method for the measurement of the level of an electrically conductive liquid. In a preferred form of the invention the liquid is milk provided within a suitable container. The arrangement includes at least two spaced apart electrodes and an elongate coil which are at least partially immersed in the electrically conductive liquid. Means are provided for passing an alternating current through and between the first and second electrodes, by way of the electrically conductive liquid. This forms or creates an electro-magnetic field about the first electrode which is then picked up by and current induced in the coil. Means are provided to convert and read the electro-magnetic field into a substantially linear function (current) of the level of the electrically conductive liquid. The method includes at least partially immersing at least two electrodes and one elongate coil in an electrically conductive liquid.

Abstract: A method and apparatus is described for determining the unbalance of wheels mounted on the drive axle of an automobile by transducers detecting the forces and/or vibrations produced by the unbalance present in an automobile wheel which is jacked up for this purpose. Other equipment, in addition to the engine of the automobile, drives or brakes either of the two wheels in order to obtain a speed difference between the wheels. A measuring unit determines the magnitude and direction of unbalance. A device also determines the speeds of the driven wheels.

  • Patent number: 4554834
Abstract: An acoustic sensor and method of using same for determining the position of a tool from a workpiece are disclosed in which a piezoelectric transducer having a curved surface emits a sound wave which strikes the workpiece and is reflected back to the sensor. The sensor and tool are positioned relative to one another so that the workpiece will be near the focal point of the curved surface when the tool is operating. This positioning substantially overcomes the attenuation problems of high frequency sound waves transmitted through air.

  • Patent number: 4554836
Abstract: Optical interferometric apparatus for detecting and measuring discontinuis in structural materials from ultrasonic stress waves at their surfaces. The apparatus includes an acousto-optic (a/o) modulator which shifts a portion of a laser beam in frequency, producing a modulated beam of light. This modulated light beam is deflected and passes through an adjustable lens to the surface being measured. The light scattered by the surface is focused by the lens on an end mirror of the laser which produced the original beam, and is divergingly reflected therefrom. The reflected, scattered light is heterodyned with the unshifted portion of the laser beam in a photodiode to produce a phase modulated signal at the acoustic frequency of the a/o modulator. Surface displacement can be measured as a function of instantaneous phase shift, and surface velocity as a function of rate of change of phase shift.

  • Patent number: 4554837
Abstract: The reflective optical pressure sensor of this invention is a system for measuring the pressure of a liquid comprising a light source and a capillary formed in a transparent solid having a reflective surface positioned in the light path of light from the light source. A light detector is positioned in the path of light originating from the light source which has been reflected by the reflective surface of the capillary. The inlet end of the capillary is open for communication with liquid to be monitored for pressure, and the other end of the capillary is closed or communicates with a closed reservoir. If the pressure of the liquid to be monitored increases, increasing amounts of the liquid pass into the capillary passageway, blocking or reducing light flow to the light detector.

  • Patent number: 4554842
Abstract: An anti-backlash mechanism for a machine drive is disclosed, wherein a shaft carries a rotary worm wheel having drive connections to the tangs of two back-to-back clutch units. The first clutch unit is connected to a rotatable shaft, concentric with the worm wheel, and having a first helical gear on its end. A second helical gear on the support shaft is torsionally and axially free to slip. The second gear is connected to the second clutch unit by a torque tube permitting relative axial movement to occur between the two. A first actuator biases the two gears apart, and a second actuator between the second helical gear and the clutch units provides clamping force to engage the mechanism. An output bull gear is in mesh with the pair of helical gears. To engage the mechanism, the second actuator is energized, impressing a snugging force on the discs of the clutch units, and driving the second helical gear in an axial direction toward the first helical gear.
