Patent number: 4702102Abstract: Relatively compact apparatus for rapidly and continuously measuring the percentage of dissolved gas in a liquid. In one embodiment thereof, the apparatus includes a gas permeable tube or membrane closed at one end having its other end connected to a pressure sensor. The gas permeable tube is mounted on the apparatus housing such that it can be immersed in the liquid to be measured. During the measurement process, if the liquid contains less dissolved gas than the equilibrium quantity at atmospheric pressure, it will absorb gas from within the gas permeable tube thereby changing the internal tube-gas pressure. The percentage of dissolved gas is related to the extent of gas absorption by the liquid and the resulting internal tube-gas pressure after gas absorption is substantially complete.Type: GrantFiled: December 28, 1983Date of Patent: October 27, 1987Assignee: Polaroid CorporationInventor: Denis Hammerton

Patent number: 4702110Abstract: The present invention is a method and apparatus for measuring the average hardness of a metal. This method capitalizes on the discovery that a longitudinal wave will travel roughly twice as fast as a transverse (shear) wave, the times-of-flight of the two waves are affected to different degrees by hardness, and there is a linear relationship between velocity and hardness. Longitudinal and transverse ultrasonic signals are applied to a first end (face) of the metal. The longitudinal and transverse signals are detected at this same first end of the metal after they are reflected off of the second end (face) of the metal. The time-of-flight for each of the longitudinal and transverse waves is measured. The hardness, H, in the metal is then determined by applying substantially the following equation: ##EQU1## where: H.sub.1 =known hardness for the hard phase of the metal;h=a constant for the metal alloy;R=measured ratio of shear and longitudinal times of transit; andR.sub.Type: GrantFiled: July 25, 1986Date of Patent: October 27, 1987Assignee: J. Patent number: 4702142Abstract: A keyboard operated musical instrument is disclosed in which musical tones are created by reading out data values stored in a waveshape memory. The number of stored data points is reduced by storing the data values in segments corresponding to one-half of the number of data points for a period of a waveshape. By using synthesized data having a symmetry about the midpoint, the second half of the waveshape is recovered by a forward and backward memory address read of each waveshape segment. After reading each segment a predetermined number of cycles, an abrupt jump is made to the next segment of waveshape data points. The fundamental frequency of the tone is varied in a temporal manner by changing the memory advance rate of reading waveshape data out of memory in response to a frequency offset data corresponding to each segment of the waveshape data. An alternative embodiment is disclosed for a tone generator in which the musical waveshape is computed in real time from stored sets of harmonic coefficients.Type: GrantFiled: April 17, 1986Date of Patent: October 27, 1987Assignee: Kawai Musical Instruments Mfg. Patent number: 4702144Abstract: A cocking slide (2,3) for automatic hand firearms serves for manually pulling back the spring loaded lock of the weapon by means of a one-way coupling (8,9). The cocking slide (2,3) comprises a handle (3), projecting laterally from the weapon, which possesses a device (11,12,13) for arbitrarily blocking the one-way coupling (8,9). In order to safeguard the cocking slide (2,3), in spite of it being easy and safe to actuate, against damage by the effect of external forces, and to enable the lock to be urged forward by means of the cocking slide (2,3), the handle (3) consists of a guiding part (4) and a grip part (6). The grip part (6) is spring-loaded and slewable about an axle parallel with the barrel. Moreover, the grip part is slewable toward the weapon against spring bias over the entire path of the cocking slide, whereby the one-way coupling (8,9) can be blocked.Type: GrantFiled: June 9, 1986Date of Patent: October 27, 1987Assignee: Steyr-Daimler-Puch AGInventor: Ulrich Zedrosser

Patent number: 4702146Abstract: A gas pressure adjusting device in the gas-operated mechanism of a gas-operated autoloading shotgun is in the form of a valve assembly comprising essentially a valve seat encompassing a stepped valve opening consisting of adjacent opening parts of different diameters, a valve body having first and second pressure-receiving surfaces and first and second sliding contact surfaces respectively fitted slideably in the valve opening parts, and a spring urging the valve body toward and into closed state against the valve seat. This valve assembly operates with a double action wherein the gas pressure tapped from the barrel bore acts initially on only the first pressure-receiving surface of the valve body and, upon exceeding a predetermined pressure, moves the valve body past a point where it acts also on the second pressure-receiving surface thereby to be released into the outside air.Type: GrantFiled: February 7, 1986Date of Patent: October 27, 1987Assignee: Howa Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Kouhei Ikeda, Kozo Iwata, Hisayoshi Masaki

Patent number: 4702147Abstract: This invention provides a valving arrangement for a reciprocating engine in which there are two valve assemblies, each with a pressure responsive valve member. As the piston approaches the end of its stroke in either direction, the exhaust port is closed, such as by an extension on the piston, causing fluid pressure to build up in the end of the cylinder. This pressure is conducted to the valve assemblies through fluid lines, causing the pressure-responsive valve members to move in response to the pressure build-up in the end of the cylinder. These valve members control the inlet and exhaust connections to the cylinder so that the piston is caused to reciprocate by the working fluid as the valve members are moved pneumatically to open and close the lines.Type: GrantFiled: August 2, 1985Date of Patent: October 27, 1987Inventors: Don E. Patent number: 4702148Abstract: The invention relates to a method for the simultaneous actuation of a plurality of hydraulic consumers by means of intrinsically-safe electro-hydraulic valves. The consumers are connected by hydraulic directional control valves to a pressure line and/or a return line. These hydraulic directional control valves can be connected in a predetermined manner, via pre-control valves to a control line. The pre-control valves are pressureless, and possess electro-magnets with a current consumption of less than 50 milliamps. By connection of a series-connected electro-hydraulic directional control valve means, the pre-control valves are connected to the control line, and at the same time are hydraulically locked.Type: GrantFiled: June 25, 1986Date of Patent: October 27, 1987Assignee: Gewerkschaft Eisenhutte Westfalia GmbHInventors: Willy Kussel, Michael Dettmers, Walter Weirich

Patent number: 4702149Abstract: Passive dehumidification ventilator for crawl spaces and attics of dwellings. According to the present invention, dehumidification is accomplished for the attics and crawl spaces of dwellings by providing entrance tubes for circulating air in these regions. The tubes are constructed such that cooler incoming air through the center of the tubes causes condensation on exterior surfaces of moisture that is contained in the air of an attic or crawl space. This moisture is then conveyed exterior to the building so that it is not reintrained in the air flow. Since moisture is reduced by condensation, a lower air flow is required to reduce the moisture content, and thus the heat load of the heating system is reduced thereby. In a soffit unit, a plurality of tubes direct air into the region adjacent the roof structure such that moisture ladened air flowing down the inner surface of the roof condenses the moisture therefrom on the exterior of the tubes.Type: GrantFiled: January 20, 1987Date of Patent: October 27, 1987Inventor: William D.
