  • Patent number: 4738020
Abstract: Elongated thin strip stock is blanked to form interlocking laminas for electric motor or generator rotors or stators at successive blanking stations. At a final assembly station the laminas are stacked and pressed into interlocking relationship. In response to an operator input a predetermined number of reversals, or half turns about the stack axis of the previously stacked lamina are provided in order to compensate for nonuniform strip thickness to obtain a rotor or stator of substantially uniform height. Alternatively the thickness of the strip stock is gauged at transversely spaced points on the strip to determine cross feed thickness variation in the strip whereupon the stacked laminas are automatically provided with a number of reversals about the stack axis in response to a thickness differential that would result in a parallelism error in the stack that exceeds a predetermined amount.

  • Patent number: 4738025
Abstract: Automated positioning apparatus for positioning multi-contact components on a circuit board utilizes automated members having a high degree of repetitive movement but not in themselves accurate, such member being relatively inexpensive. A positioning member picks up a component and moves it over a first viewing head. The component is viewed and its orientation determined. A viewing head on the positioning member is then positioned over a target on a circuit board and its position and orientation determined. The results enable the positioning member to position the component on the circuit board in the correct position and orientation. The viewing heads are calibrated for aspect ratio and pixel dimension. Also, the field of view of the viewing heads are calibrated for orientation relative to the positioning member. The position and orientation of the viewing head on the positioning member relative to a pick-up member on the positioning member is also obtained.

Abstract: This disclosure relates to an access door assembly for a ceiling. The assembly includes a frame adapted to be attached to supports of the ceiling and mounted in a generally horizontal position, and a door which fits within and has one edge hingedly connected to the frame. The hinge enables the door to swing between a generally horizontal closed position within the frame and a lowered open position. A constant-force return spring urges the door to the closed position, and an automatically engageable lock is provided for holding the door in the closed position. The frame and the door have closely adjacent Z-shaped frame members and the door is made of heat-resistant material, to form a fire retardant construction.

  • Patent number: 4738055
Abstract: An alignment sleeve (66) for holding two conically shaped portions (30-30) of plugs (24-24) each of which terminates an optical fiber (25) includes two conically shaped cavities (68, 70) communicating through a common minimal diameter plane (72). After the sleeve has been molded, a tool (100) faced with an abrasive material is inserted into each cavity of the sleeve and turned rotatably while a force is applied in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the tool. This causes material to be removed from the walls defining the cavities so that when the two plugs are inserted into the cavities, the axes of the fibers will be aligned coaxially and the end faces of the fibers will have a predetermined separation. The methods of this invention also may be used to adjust a length measurement of plugs. This is accomplished by inserting a plug into a conically shaped cavity of a tool.

  • Patent number: 4738056
Abstract: A process and apparatus for improving the finishing of silicon wafers intended for use as a base plate of an I.C. device. After the wafer has been cut from a silicon crystal and initially ground, then a slurry of water and silicon carbide particles is blasted against the surface to create a mattelike satin finish. This surface is then lapped to provide a mirrorlike finish. To perform the method, the wafer is disposed in a cuplike fixture constructed of resilient material, which fixture defines a cylindrical recess which is of a diameter slightly greater than that of the wafer. The fixture has a support projecting upwardly from the bottom wall and defining an annular drainage passage therearound, which support has the wafer positioned thereon. The blasting media is ejected into the fixture to finish the surface on the wafer, and the slurry drains downwardly around the edge of the wafer into the annular drain passage, and then out through outlet openings which project radially through the wall of the fixture.

  • Patent number: 4738062
Abstract: A picket for anchoring objects to an article is disclosed. The picket includes multiple helically-shaped members disposed about a common longitudinal axis and connected to one another. In one embodiment the object sought to be secured is placed between the end portions of the helically-shaped members and the picket is rotated into engagement with the surface thereby trapping the object sought to be secured between the helically-shaped members and a connecting means. The multiple helically shaped members increase the surface engaging force and permit the object sought to be anchored to be placed in a desired location on a surface and anchored without requiring the use of additional connecting means. In other embodiments an anchoring portion of the picket is integrally formed with, or fixed to, a generally cylindrical collar portion to provide both secure anchoring and lateral stability. A dental application for anchoring a dental prosthesis to a bone structure is also disclosed.
