  • Patent number: 4751818
Abstract: A hydraulic drive system for driving a platen in forward and return reciprocatory strokes includes a hydraulically driven reciprocable piston and a reversible rotary hydraulic motor having a crank coupled to the platen by a link. A hydraulic circuit employs a variable output pump connected via a reversible direction control valve to drive the piston and crank in unison to cooperatively drive the platen. The piston and crank motor are connected in parallel to the pump and the pump output is advantageously distributed variably between the piston and motor during the stroke cycle. Where the stroke of the platen is vertical, the system may include a hydraulic counterbalance circuit to counterbalance the weight of the platen. The pump output may be varied to control the velocity of the platen at selected points in its stroke.

  • Patent number: 4751819
Abstract: The compressor compresses a high pressure fluid such as gas or steam in a working chamber provided with a thermo-regenerator connected in parallel. Said fluid is alternatingly brought to a high temperature in the warm portion of the chamber by means of a heat supply and is taken down to a reduced temperature in the cold portion of the chamber by means of a refrigerator. The cold portion communicates with a fluid separator comprised of two chambers which are sealingly separated by means of a piston or an elastic membrane. The chamber of the fluid separator connected with the cold portion of the working chamber forms together with the latter a primary circuit of the compressor which uses as working fluid helium, hydrogen or an overheated steam of a condensable fluid. The second chamber is connected with two pressurized containers through two return valves with opposite passage and wherein the working fluid (liquid, gas-oil mixture) is stored at two different pressures.

  • Patent number: 4751822
Abstract: A process and apparatus for bringing CO.sub.2 from a storage tank wherein it is stored at a medium pressure and below 0.degree. C. (e.g. -20.degree. C. and 20 bars pressure) to a high pressure such as 80-130 bars, without utilizing any pump operating below 0.degree. C. The build-up of ice on such a pump is thus avoided. To do this, liquid from the tank is caused to completely fill by gravity an intermediate vessel. Then the vessel is heated to about ambient temperature; and while maintaining such temperature (e.g. by means of resistor 16), the liquid in the vessel is subcooled by compression in FIG. 1 or by cooling water in FIG. 2, and conveyed to the inlet of the high pressure pump.

  • Patent number: 4751828
Abstract: A freezing apparatus for bringing samples of biological tissue in contact with a block of sapphire that is chilled to 15.degree. K. has a toggle linkage that controls movement of a plunger carrying a biological tissue sample into contact with a cold surface of sapphire, and minimizes rebound by slowing the rate of approach of the tissue sample toward the cold surface to a velocity of substantially zero at contact. An outer box of plexiglass is used to limit the formation of condensates on the surface of the sapphire, and the specimen carrier includes a miniature moist chamber that protects the specimen from drying before moving it toward the surface. The moist chamber is removed just before operation of the freezing apparatus. The toggle linkage provides repeatability of results with minimum setup time between insertion of samples, and substantially reduces rebounding and vibration that retards the rate of freezing of the specimen.

  • Patent number: 4751838
Abstract: A machine for leveling sheet metal strip without severing or marring the strip includes two stretcher frames, each having a set of jaws which clamp down on the strip, so that a segment of the strip is isolated between the jaws of the two frames. While the jaws grip the strip with enough compressive force to prevent the strip from slipping in the jaws, and yet not mark it, the frames are forced apart with enough force to stretch the isolated segment beyond its elastic limit for the entire width of the isolated segment, thus leveling the segment. Thereupon the parting force is released, and after the isolated segment has recovered its elastic deformation, the jaws release the strip, and the strip is advanced a distance not exceeding the length of the previously isolated segment. The procedure is then repeated until the entire strip has been leveled. The machine may be utilized in combination with a feeding machine which grips the leveled portion of the strip and advances it a preset distance.

Abstract: Fluid systems for controlling clutch engagement normally have modulating pressure relief valves to aid in smooth clutch engagement. It is also desired in such systems to ensure that the system pressure is reduced to a low level so that the load piston is fully reset prior to initial engagement of the newly filled clutch. In this arrangement, in order to ensure that the load piston is fully reset, a mechanism is provided which establishes a ratio between the pressure of the fluid being directed to the clutch and the pressure of the fluid acting on the load piston of the modulating pressure relief valve so that the pressurized fluid acting on the load piston during the filling of the clutch is vented to the reservoir to reset the load piston even though the pressure of the fluid available to the clutch is still at a higher pressure level.
