  • Patent number: 4766705
Abstract: A method of polishing a roof-shaped, or bevelled, tip having a predetermined angle on the end of an optical fiber is disclosed. The method comprises placing an optical fiber in contact with an abrasive tape at an angle corresponding to the desired predetermined angle. The fiber is moved towards the tape beyond the point of contact so as to cause a bend in the fiber. Upon moving the abrasive tape, the compliance of the fiber, by virtue of the bend, provides a pressure of the fiber against the tape to enable polishing to occur. As polishing continues the pressure decreases until enough material is removed so as to eliminate the bend and impart the predetermined angle to the fiber tip. The fiber may be rotated to polish the other side in a similar manner, if so desired.

  • Patent number: 4766720
Abstract: Conventional apparatus for pressing the track links onto pin and bushings of the track chain during assembly thereof experience difficulty in aligning the links with the pin and bushings because the presses become somewhat loose and out of alignment. The subject apparatus overcomes this problem by providing a self aligning feature in the link locating and driving means. The link locating and driving member is mounted on the pressure plate that is attached to the press rams. A support plate is guided from the pressure plate by guides and resilient members that allow the support plate to shift with respect to the pressure plate with the aid of tapered noses on plungers supported by pressure barrels as the rams move forwardly to press the links onto the pin and bushings held in a fixture. In this manner any misalignment is accounted for by the self-aligning feature of the locating and driving members.

  • Patent number: 4766741
Abstract: A recondenser cycles a working volume of cryogen gas through a remote cold box and a coaxial recondensing, heat exchanger transfer line which is inserted into a cryostat. The working volume of gas is compressed to a high pressure and cooled through cooling means which include a mechanical refrigerator of the regenerator-displacer type. The cooled gas is expanded through a first JT valve to a medium pressure and further cooled. The further cooled medium pressure gas is transferred in a closed coaxial transfer line to a cryostat in which boil-off is recondensed. A second JT valve in the cryostat end of an inner tube coaxially positioned in an outer tube forming the transfer line expands the gas to a lower pressure and forms a liquid-gas mixture. The liquid-gas mixture is passed in heat exchange relation with the boil-off from an inner tube to an outer tube of a coaxial recondensing heat exchanger.

  • Patent number: 4766744
Abstract: The process for rendering wool sliver shrinkproof involves complete wetting of at least one laterally unguided wool sliver with a chlorinating liquor at ambient temperature wherein the liquor is applied to the sliver with a four- to sevenfold excess. The sliver is conducted immediately thereafter through a guide slot, together with the applied excess quantity of liquid; the complete wetting of the fibers of the sliver with the chlorinating liquor is effected in this guide slot by separating the wool sliver from possible air occlusions. Subsequently thereto, the sliver is accompanied by the liquor through a small-volume guide channel, to be squeezed out following the chlorine treatment. The apparatus has a pair of squeeze rolls, the cylinders of which are arranged to be spaced apart to form a guide slot and are rotatably mounted, these squeeze rolls being associated immediately thereabove with spray means to supply the chlorinating liquor necessary for complete wetting.
