    Abstract: To permit automatic ejection of shells in a progressive shell loader, a cam is mounted near the turret holding the shells. As the carriage is raised and lowered, two pawls and an index wheel turn it so that the shells advance toward a final station. Immediately prior to the final station, the cam engages a spring-biased lever to cause it to eject the reloaded shell. The pawls engage camming surfaces formed on the bottom of a single-piece index wheel to turn it.

    Abstract: An elongated flexible bag is fitted inside templates that have aligned openings therein corresponding in shape to that desired for a solid rocket motor propellant bore. With the bottom sealed, the bag is filled with a multiplicity of solid pieces each having a cross section substantially less than that of the bag. When filled, suction is applied to the bag by a vacuum needle to exhaust air therefrom until the bag is very tight on the solid pieces contained therein. The vacuum needle is then withdrawn, the hole made thereby is sealed, and the templates are removed from the bag. After use in loading a solid rocket motor with propellant, the bag is cut open, the solid pieces are removed, and the bag is peeled out of the bore in the propellant.

    Abstract: A control linkage for varying the length of stroke of a hydraulic cylinder is disclosed wherein a slide member is telescopically received within a bracket member, one of these members being connected to the extension end of the hydraulic cylinder while the other member is connected to the base end. A limiting mechanism in the form of a series of holes in one of the members alignable with a slotted opening in the other member and a fastener positionable within one of said holes and also through the slotted opening serves to limit the amount of telescopic movement of the slide member from the bracket member. As a result, the extension of the hydraulic cylinder can be selectively varied according to the preset length of the control linkage. An alternative embodiment in which a fastener is positionable within the holes externally of the slotted opening provides a two way stroke limiter by restricting the length of the retraction stroke of the hydraulic cylinder.

    Abstract: A shutter assembly for a whole house fan is disclosed which can be flush mounted (i.e., substantially coplanar) with the underside surface of a ceiling so as to close off an opening in the ceiling leading to a whole house fan located thereabove. The shutter assembly comprises a frame somewhat larger than the opening and adapted to be flush mounted to the underside of the ceiling surrounding the opening. The frame is comprised of side and end members. A bracket at the intersection of the frame members securely joins the frame members together. The brackets have temporary attachment tabs for temporarily holding the frame in place with respect to the ceiling sheathing until the frame is securely secured to the ceiling structure. These temporary securing tabs are carried by the brackets and are spaced from the portion of the frame which is flush mounted to the underside of the ceiling so as to hold the ceiling between the frame and the tabs, and thus hold the frame assembly in place.

    Abstract: A rectangular damper blade rotates about its longitudinal center line between an open and closed position to control the airflow entering an enclosure. Two longitudinal edges of the damper blade become positioned between two inlet edges of the enclosure as the blade rotates to the closed position. The blade is associated with two longitudinal seals. One seal is attached directly to one of the blade's longitudinal edges and provides wiping contact against one of the inlet edges. The other seal is attached to the other inlet edge and provides wiping contact against the blade's other longitudinal edge. Both seals have similar cross-sections to facilitate their interchangeability. And both seals include a flexible lip that extends upstream and perpendicular to the blade to enhance the sealing force and to minimize wiping friction.

In operation, the suction gripper lifts a sheet, and then one of the driving and pressure rollers slides under the sheet and carries it to the impression cylinder, whereupon it acts as a pressure roller during the printing process.

    Abstract: A boat, especially a catamaran, having a rectangular collapsible frame with a one-man mast stepping structure. The tubular frame is comprised of fore, aft and central sub-frame assemblies which can be collapsed so as to be easily car topable and serve as a rack for containing other components of the catamaran. Inflatable hulls are secured in bracket arches on the undersides of the sub-frame assemblies. A rudder frame or cage is pivotally mounted on an aft sub-frame assembly and is adapted to receive a rudder, which is identical to and interchangeable with daggerboards. A system of adjustable rope stays is provided for adjusting the mast.

The rigging (9) comprises a flexible sail (10) of two substantially identical flexible sail portions (80, 82) each having a leach (18) and a luff (20). Elongated battens (92) are in contact with the flexible sail portions (80, 82). A control rod (32) has the battens (92) and luffs of the sail portions (80, 82) rotatably attached so that the perpendicular distance between the sail portions (80, 82) varies wherein angular displacement of the control rod (32) with respect to the boom causes the battens (92) to be compressed along their length so as to bend one of the sail portions (80) to increase the camber thereof and causes the battens (92) of the other sail portions (82) to be tensioned along their length so as to partly straighten the other sail portion (82) which decreases the perpendicular distance between the sail portions (80, 82) resulting in asymmetry of the aerofoil.

A spinnaker so equipped with luff beading has been found able to sail closer to the wind than a sail not so equipped, by an average 2.degree. to 5.degree. and is also less critical with respect to overall trim at other pointing angles when reaching.

    Abstract: A rope cleat includes a rectangular plastic bottom plate and a nesting sheet steel top plate. Bolt holes in the corners of the plates allow bolts to retain the plates together and to mount the cleat onto a mounting surface. A pair of cam spindles and back-to-back rope abutments, integral to the bottom plate, protrude through matching cam spindle openings and rope abutment openings in the top plate.The edge of each cam spindle opening is rounded upward into a cam spindle boss to support the cam spindle. A cam, with rope gripping teeth on its rise, rotates on each cam spindle, is retained thereon by a washer and self tapping screw, and is biased by a C-shaped leaf spring.The front of each rope abutment also has rope gripping teeth. The back of each rope abutment is reinforced by a boss, bent upward from the top plate to leave the rope abutment opening. Each boss is strengthened by a vertical crimp, the apex of which supports and is supported by the apex of the crimp in the other boss.

    Abstract: A recoverable sea anchor for a vessel wherein the anchor is made from a flexible sheet material with a periphery and a center. A plurality of lines interconnect a plurality of spaced points around such periphery to a ring which in turn is connected via a releasable connecting means to a swivel. A mooring line is then used to connect such swivel to the vessel. The releasable connecting means is operative to release the connection between the swivel and the ring in response to a predetermined load to put into play a disabling line, in a slack inoperative condition which then interconnects the swivel and the center of the chute or another portion of the chute to disable or collapse the concave chute. A modification of the sea anchor is to make it frusto conical or tubular in shape.

    Abstract: A highly compact machine for applying an attractive protective coating to a paper web that passes through a printing press is located between the last press stand and the dryer of the printing press, and to enable the machine to receive the web, the printing press is provided with an apparatus for directing the web back to the print stands and the machine after the web passes through the dryer. The machine includes upper and lower blanket cylinders, a plate cylinder contacting the lower blanket cylinder, and an oscillating cylinder below the plate cylinder. In addition the coating machine includes a pan containing a coating fluid and a pan roller, the surface of which rotates through the fluid in the pan to lift it out of the pan. A metering roller revolves close to the pan roller to remove excess fluid from the pan roller which thereupon transfers the fluid to a form roller. That form roller runs against the oscillating cylinder and transfers the fluid to the oscillating cylinder.

    Abstract: A tinning station for axial lead electronic components includes a presentation system for arranging a plurality of axial lead components in an elevated linear array with adjacent components lying parallel to each other. A pair of grippers, have a pair of parallel bars each having a longitudinal slot and a length at least as long as the length of the component array. These bars are moved toward or away from each other by an actuator which is mounted on a robotic arm. This arm is programmed to position the grippers adjacent to the array so that the actuator can cause the grippers to clamp the ends of the bodies of the components in the array. Then the arm dips the leads on each side of the array into the solder flux and subsequently into molten solder, thereby tinning the leads. The thickness of the grippers defines an untinned length of each component lead. A release fixture is used to dislodge any components which do not fall from the grippers when the grippers are separated.
