  • Patent number: 4791782
Abstract: The invention relates to fluid outlet ducts particularly cooling air outlet ducts of a gas turbine engine. A fluid outlet duct for a gas turbine engine is divided across its width into a plurality of second plenum chambers, each of the second plenum chambers has an associated exit nozzle located in the casing of the gas turbine engine for discharging cooling air. The cooling air from a heat exchanger is supplied through a first plenum chamber to each of the second plenum chambers. Each of the second plenum chambers has a valve to vary the flow of cooling into the second plenum chambers so that the total flow area of the fluid outlet duct may be varied to obtain relatively high exit velocities for the cooling air to give good thrust recovery.

  • Patent number: 4791783
Abstract: A convertible aircraft engine, capable of turboshaft and/or turbofan modes of operation, is provided in a configuration that combines certain components to permit variation in bypass flow to match engine airflows with the mode of engine operation. The provided components permit the engine to decrease the power requirements of the engine's forward fan when the engine is operated in the turboshaft mode. To permit a decrease in fan power requirements, the fan is split into an outer portion and an inner portion separated by a rotating shroud. Airflow into the fan's outer portion is controlled with a part span inlet guide vane and an outlet guide vane. The guide vanes can be used to lessen the load on the outer portion of the fan while the inner portion continues to accelerate and compress a normal airflow into an engine compressor for supplying the engine's core. The power normally used to drive the fan outer portion is used instead to power a transfer shaft in the turboshaft mode.

  • Patent number: 4791785
Abstract: Filtering apparatus for removing combustible particles from a gas, e.g. carbon and hydrocarbon particles from the exhaust gases of a diesel engine, comprises at least one filter element which is made of fibrous material and is electrically conductive. To remove trapped particles from the filter element and thereby regenerate the filter element, electrical power is supplied to the filter element to heat it to the point at which the carbon and hydrocarbon particles combust. One or a plurality of such filter elements may be provided in a housing in the exhaust gas system of a diesel engine with the filter elements exposed in parallel to exhaust gases. For regeneration, all filter elements may be simultaneously regenerated while exhaust gases are either exhausted direct to the air or through a similar filtering apparatus. Alternatively the filter elements may be regenerated sequentially so that at least some of the filter elements are always effective as filters.

  • Patent number: 4791790
Abstract: Disclosed is an air-cooled absorption-type water cooling and heating apparatus, wherein, during a heating operation, the absorption heat generated when a condensed solution absorbs refrigerant vapor is imparted to circulated cold or hot water flowing through a first cold/hot water heat exchanger so as to convert the water into hot water, and condensation heat necessary for condensation of refrigerant vapor by a water heating device is supplied to circulated cold or hot water flowing through a second cold/hot water heat exchanger so as to convert said water into hot water for heating. At this time, since the refrigerant solution evaporates on an inner wall surface of a cylinder by absorbing the heat of the air, the heat obtained from the air is added to the heat obtained from the high-temperature regenerator, with the result that a heat pump effect can be obtained.

  • Patent number: 4791800
Abstract: A roll forming process is described wherein longitudinal areas of curvature are formed in strip material between longitudinal areas of narrower width, the areas of curvature being bowed downwardly from the center toward the longitudinal flat areas. As the strip material is fed progressively through roll forming stations, the longitudinal areas of curvature are formed into areas of lesser curvature and finally flattened to provide strip material having relative flat areas separated by substantially rectangular ribs. The process is one in which areas of curvature are provided to initially gather strip material for use in forming the sides of one or more ribs with little or no thinning of the strip material.

Abstract: Reversible fuel assembly grid tab repair tool having a tab bending member for remotely reforming fuel assembly grid tabs, wherein the tool has means for fine alignment of the tab bending member with the grid tab to be reformed. The grid tabs may be formed on the top and bottom edges of a grid strap which wraps a plurality of fuel rods disposed in the fuel assembly. The repair tool comprises a generally L-shaped frame having a vertical first leg and a horizontal second leg. Extending from the terminal end of the second leg is an alignment blade capable of being interposed between two fuel rods adjacent each side of the grid tab to be reformed. Attached to the top surface of the second leg at the terminus thereof is an anvil block having an anvil surface for bending the grid tab thereagainst when the grid tab is interposed between the anvil surface and the tab bending member.

Abstract: In a multi-stage forming machine, a die-change device, for male dies in a male-die block has a mounting plate for receiving a clamping face of the male-die block on one side. Bayonet fasteners on hollow pistons in the mounting plate then engage the male dies, and a pressure medium then moves the hollow pistons to move the male dies against thrust pieces displacably in the hollow pistons and the thrust pieces against an adjusting wedge on the opposite side of the mounting plate.

  • Patent number: 4791805
Abstract: A method and device for testing for leaks in fuel tanks. The method requires a vacuum be drawn around the fuel tank while a test gas is injected into the tank. Any leaks in the tank will permit the test gas to be drawn into the vacuum chamber, the output of which is tested by a sensor sensitive to the test gas. The entire test is conducted assuring speed, accuracy and safety. The tank device contains a vacuum chamber which is molded directly upon the tank to be tested, thereby minimizing the size of the vacuum chamber. The device also contains a sealing system which is adjustable. An optional addition to the system is a method of localizing a leak that is detected.

  • Patent number: 4791807
Abstract: A novel apparatus for determining the relative hardness and abrasion resistance of industrial film coatings and linings is disclosed. In its preferred form, the apparatus comprises a rigid handle incorporating a pre-set angle between its flat lower surface and a flexible spring blade attached at one end to the handle, and a scoring stylus attached at the other end of the spring blade. By placing the bottom of the handle on the surface of the film coating or lining whose relative hardness and abrasion resistance is to be determined, the spring blade is caused to deflect and thereby exert a constant and predetermined force through the scoring stylus onto the film coating or lining. By drawing or pulling the handle across the surface of the film coating or lining while maintaining the lower surface of the handle in complete contact with the film coating or lining, the scoring stylus creates a scratch on the surface of the film coating or lining.

  • Patent number: 4791810
Abstract: An apparatus and a method are provided for detecting and monitoring flow of a fluid through an injector, such as a fuel injector (10) of a diesel engine. Ultrasonic waves are detected by a transducer (12), and signals passed through a filter (20), so as to observe broadband signals of frequency above 100 kHz. Such signals are due to turbulent flow through the injector orifice (38), and so enable the flow itself to be detected.
