  • Patent number: 4831702
Abstract: A method and apparatus for facilitating removal of spent tubes from boilers or heat exchangers in environments where access to one side of the wall through which the tube extends is limited. The apparatus includes a jaw assembly that is movable between a retracted position, at which it can be introduced within a tube to be removed, and an expanded position, at which it radially expands the tube so as to prevent longitudinal movement of the tube. The jaw assembly can be manipulated between the retracted and expanded positions solely through the tube interior so that a worker stationed at a proximal end of the tube to be removed can move the jaw assembly to the expanded position at which the distal end of the tube is fixed against longitudinal movement. After application of pulling forces to fracture the tube, the jaw assembly can be disengaged solely by access through the tube from the proximal end, whereby efficiency of tube removal in environments of limited access is materially enchanced.

  • Patent number: 4831703
Abstract: Both an apparatus and method for plugging a conduit, such as a tube in the tubesheet of a nuclear steam generator, is disclosed herein. The plugging apparatus generally comprises an inelastically expandable plug that contains a fluid-receiving cavity, and an expansion means including both a source of pressurized hydraulic fluid and a pull-rod member having a piston for advantageously applying both a radially expansive force and a compressive force to the plug at the same time in order to inelastically expand it into sealing engagement with the inner wall of a tube. In the apparatus of the invention, the compressive force exerted on the plug by the pull-rod member not only serves to inelastically deform the plug into a radially expanded shape, but is also used to seal the open end of the plug so that the pressurized hydraulic fluid admitted within the cavity of the plug will not escape.

  • Patent number: 4831704
Abstract: An apparatus for connecting stacked thin plates 4, 5 (in particular sheet-metal plates) or plate sections, according to which stacked flat parts 10, 11 of both plates are first deep drawn together with one another, after which the bottom area of the deep-drawn flat parts is swaged wider, and wherein the radial expansion of the bottom area of these deep-drawn flat parts is limited, as a result of which a plastic deformation of the material of the plate takes place, particularly in the peripheral area, so that a connection point is created. By means of a crimp 17 present in the peripheral area of the bottom 16 of the blind opening 3 of the die 2, the swaged material flows into itself at the points that are to be connected, and hence the clinching strength, is improved.

  • Patent number: 4831705
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a sheet metal poly-V pulley including forming a tubular peripheral wall integrally from the peripheral edge of bottom wall and forming poly-V grooves in the peripheral wall at specified pitches, in which a bent part is formed in the bottom wall in an annular form concentric with the axial center of the peripheral wall and bulging out in a convex form toward the opening side of the peripheral wall. The load from the poly-V belt which may cause plastic deformation of the sheet metal poly-V pulley is absorbed by this bent part, so that the increase of material cost, difficulty in forming, and increase of weight due to increase of the thickness of the blank of sheet metal poly-V pulley in order to enhance the strength may be avoided.

  • Patent number: 4831725
Abstract: A method for interconnecting nodes in each of a number of nets. This invention involves generating initial zones for all nets and determining cumulative demand for path spaces needed by these initial zones. The demand is then compared with the supply, and scores are determined for the paths of the initial zones. Redundant paths with the worst scores are then gradually deleted until there are no redundant paths. If however, demand for path spaces still exceeds supply, expanded zones are generated in areas where demand exceeds supply and redundant paths are gradually deleted until there are no redundant paths. The paths remaining after deletion from the expanded zones are then used to interconnect the nodes of the nets. The nodes are then interconnected using the remaining paths.

When a mouse is clamped within the carriage and oriented relative to an X/Y axis movement of the carriage and mouse in any direction does not change the original setting of the X/Y axis. The carriage further includes a cross-hair sight for accurately tracing a drawing with the mouse and carriage.

Abstract: An apparatus for compensating for the thermal expansion of two machine parts which are relatively movable in longitudinal guideways. The apparatus comprises a rule, a support rod longitudinally disposed on the movable machine part for supporting the rule, and an electric scanning head mounted on the stationary machine part. The support rod is made of a material which exhibits negligible thermal expansion in the concerned temperature range. The forward end of the support rod is rigidly secured to the forward end of the movable machine part while the rear end thereof is movably guided on that machine part. The rear end of the rule is fixed to the rear end of the support rod. The scanning head is disposed on the stationary machine part in such a way that any thermal expansion of the stationary machine part cannot affect the location of the scanning head.

  • Patent number: 4831738
Abstract: A capacitive extensometer utilizes an extensometer frame having a pair of arms connected together about a hinge axis at first remote ends, and having second ends which include specimen contacting members for engaging the surfaces of a specimen to be tested. A capacitive type sensing arrangement is mounted on the arms, and is used with conventional circuitry for determining arm motion with respect to each other. The sensor is made so that it can be adjusted, and also can compensate for nonlinearities by utilizing differently shaped elements. The ability to mount and protect the capacitor sensor appropriately, while obtaining a relatively large output signal enhances the operability of the extensometer.

Abstract: An adjustable template device for positioning over a sheet material for use in framing and cutting the sheet material to a selected shape comprising a plurality of slidably interconnected frame members forming a closed polygon. Each frame member comprises a guide edge for guiding a cutting blade and a socket adjacent one end of the guide edge for slidably receiving a portion of an adjacent frame member so that the guide edges of adjacent frame members form the sides and one corner of the polygon formed by the device. Each of the guide means has a plurality of detents which are engageable by a pin associated with each socket to retard relative sliding of adjacent frame members. The guide edges are preferably provided with a plurality of slots for receiving a cutting blade so that a cutting blade can extend in the slots to fully cut the corners formed by the frame members. At least some of these slots are positioned relative to the detents to ensure alignment with the adjacent cutting edge.
