  • Patent number: 5282377
Abstract: When drawing wire, and particularly wire of highly tenacious material which s difficult to deform, such as tungsten or molybdenum, through a die (4), lubricant is applied to the surface of the wire (1) by generating a curtain or sheet of lubricant (6, 16) emitted from a slit-like nozzle (14), and passing the wire essentially transversely through said curtain or sheet of liquid lubricant. Preferably, the wire is preheated before being passed through said sheet of lubricant so that the lubricant will dry on the preheated wire from the inside out prior to the wire being heated to optimum drawing temperature in advance of being pulled through the die. Suitable preheating temperatures are from 100.degree. C. to 500.degree. C., and the thickness of the curtain of lubricant can be between 0.05 to about 0.3 mm, with a wire thickness in the order of about 0.1 mm, permitting drawing speeds which can vary widely and can be about double of previously obtainable drawing speeds.

  • Patent number: 5282378
Abstract: A hydraulic punching machine is disclosed which has a casing having formed therein a piston chamber in which a piston is reciprocably mounted to define a pair of opposed fluid chambers, and a fluid reservoir for containing a hydraulic fluid. The piston has a piston rod carrying a punch for movement into and out of engagement with a die on the casing. Also mounted to the casing is a motor driven pump for pressurizing the fluid. A solenoid actuated spool valve alternately places the fluid chambers in communication with the pump and with a fluid drain. The solenoid is connected to an electric control circuit capable of sensing the extension and contraction of the piston rod. Therefore, upon extension of the piston rod, with the consequent creation of a punch in the work such as sheet steel, the control circuit cases the spool valve to automatically contract the piston rod under fluid pressure.

  • Patent number: 5282380
Abstract: A process is provided for rapidly and non-destructively evaluating the particle retention characteristics of porous membranes using a novel liquid-porosimetric technique. A ratio of two membrane permeabilities is measured at preselected operating conditions using a pair of mutually immiscible fluids, one of which is employed as a membrane wetting agent and the other used as an intrusion fluid. The first operating condition, a particular transmembrane pressure, is chosen so as to selectively intrude those pores accessible to a given sized particle, such as a virus. The second operating condition, either a second preselected transmembrane pressure or a water permeability measurement, is chosen such that nearly all of the membrane pores are intruded. The ratio of the two permeabilities obtained with each set of operating conditions is thus the percentage of total flow through the membrane pores accessible to a given sized particle.

  • Patent number: 5282384
Abstract: An improved technique more accurately determines pore pressure of sedimentary rock penetrated by a borehole from the earth's surface. Formation overburden is directly measured at one or more locations in the borehole, and a log of formation overburden is generated using the measured overburden pressures and conventional geophysical data. A linear relationship has been determined between the logarithm of effective stress for a specific mineral and the logarithm of solidity, which allows the maximum effective stress and the compaction exponent for that mineral to be determined. This linear relationship enables the effective stress and compaction exponent for rock comprising a combination of minerals to be precisely determined at multiple borehole intervals. The effective stress and overburden calculated according to the techniques to the present invention are particularly useful to geologist and well planners in the oil and gas industry.

  • Patent number: 5282386
Abstract: An apparatus and technique for fluid level determination in automatic transmissions. The invention employs an electronic control unit in association with an automatic transmission for a vehicle, the electronic control unit receiving data corresponding to transmission oil level, transmission oil temperature, engine speed, transmission speed, and transmission selected range. Upon determining that such data satisfies certain diagnostic tests, the level of transmission fluid within the transmission is determined and adjusted or otherwise normalized to ideal test conditions. The electronic control unit compensates an oil level signal for deviations in oil temperature from an optimum test temperature, and makes further compensation for deviations in engine speed and settling time at the time that the test data is acquired. Additionally, variations in oil density as a function of oil temperature are also compensated.

  • Patent number: 5282397
Abstract: The engine balancing system preferably has two pivoting counterbalance weights connected to eccentric journals on the crankshaft via their respective link arms. The use of the two pivoting weights and the particular geometrical relationships between the balancing system components enable the balancing system to substantially mimic and oppose the non-sinusoidal piston forces. Several methods of balancing the non-sinusoidal piston forces are disclosed. In a first method, the centers of gravity of the respective counterbalance weights are moved at non-sinusoidal angular accelerations. These angular accelerations are greater when the piston is near its Top Dead Center position than when the piston is near its Bottom Dead Center position to yield higher balancing forces when the piston is near Top Dead Center.

  • Patent number: 5282410
Abstract: A high strength ammunition magazine box is externally mounted on the side of an aircraft by a support strut structure and is adapted to store a longitudinally serpentined ammunition belt which may be fed out to a machine gun also externally supported on the aircraft. The box has inboard and outboard side wall panels and a bottom wall panel, each of a honeycombed metal construction, with front and rear edges of the panels being epoxied into channels formed in solid metal front and rear end wall plates. A honeycombed metal lid panel is pivoted to the open upper end of the box and may be releasably held in a closed position by a spring-loaded latch bar. With the lid panel closed, a specially designed reinforcement structure securely interlocks the lid panel to upper portions of the inboard and outboard side wall panels so that relative front-to-rear movement therebetween is strongly resisted, in shear, by the lid panel.

  • Patent number: 5282417
Abstract: The intaglio printing machine has three machine stands (I, II, III). Essentially, the impression cylinder (1) and the plate cylinder (2) are mounted in the first stand (I), the stencil rollers (10) and the inking unit (11) are mounted in the second stand (II), and the color-collect cylinder (8) is mounted in the third stand (III). The third stand (III) is adjustable in such a way that it can be removed from the space between the first and second stands and brought into an inoperative position, so that it is possible to bring the second stand (II) up against the first stand (I) to form an intaglio printing machine with direct inking. This results in a convertible intaglio printing machine by means of which a collect intaglio print can be made in a first operating position, in which all three stands assume their working position, and a direct intaglio print can be made in a second operating position, with the use of only the first and second stands.
