  • Patent number: 5282421
Abstract: The invention relates to a blasting apparatus for activating a plurality of electrical detonators after predetermined time delays. The blasting apparatus includes a plurality of remote electrical delay devices. Each device is linked to a detonator, and is arranged to be serially programmed with a timing signal, which originates from the central control unit and which determines the time delay. A bidirectional signal harness, having ends which terminate at I/O ports in the control unit, serially links the delay devices to the control unit. In the event of a fault of discontinuity occurring in the harness prior to programming of the delay devices, the discontinuity is detected and the direction of programming along the bidirectional harness is reversed so that those delay devices which, due to the break, cannot be programmed in the initial direction, are programmed with timing signals travelling along the signal line in the opposite direction.

  • Patent number: 5282429
Abstract: In a coal-fired boiler, a heat recovery unit is located upstream of a dry electrostatic precipitator so as to reduce the temperature of exhaust gas flowing to the dry electrostatic precipitator and thus prevent reverse ionization in the electrostatic precipitator. The heat recovery unit located upstream of the dry electrostatic precipitator will in no way be corroded even if the concentration of dust is reduced in the dry electrostatic precipitator. A desulfurization unit does not require a cooling/dust removing section and eliminates the need for a wet electrostatic precipitator. The dry electrostatic precipitator includes a gas passage divided into a plurality of parallel passages and dampers operable to close the passages. This arrangement prevents dust from being dispersed as a result of hammering without charge.

  • Patent number: 5282431
Abstract: A process for rendering usable disposal products is described, in which unsorted pollutant-containing industrial, domestic and/or special refuse undergoes a high temperature treatment. Accompanied by the entraining of existing liquid fractions and while maintaining its mixed and combined structure, the disposal product is compressed batchwise to compact packs. While maintaining the pressure action it is subsequently positively introduced into a channel heated to over 100.degree. C. and is kept in sliding, non-positive contact with the channel walls until the initially present liquids are evaporated and mechanical restoring forces of individual disposal product components are eliminated. The entrained organic constituents at least partly assume a binder function. The shape and structurally stable, lumpy solid conglomerate forced out of the channel in this state is introduced into a high temperature reactor maintained at at least 1000.degree. C. and forms therein a gas-permeable bed.

  • Patent number: 5282435
Abstract: A device for maintaining docks or other floating bodies at a given distance from and orientation to the shore by means of a ratchet assembly hinged on the side of the dock closest to shore, and a line attached to two guides, such as pulleys, on the underside of the dock. When the level of the water varies, the device maintains the dock at the same distance from the new waterline as it was from the old, in the following manner: the line is anchored at one end on shore and at the other to a bottom anchor beyond the farthest point the dock will extend to at lowest water level. Tension in the line pushes the dock towards the shore until the ratchet contacts the bottom, where equilibrium is established. If the water falls, the ratchet pushes the dock away from shore and a new equilibrium is established, farther out; this repeats as long as the water falls. If the level rises, the ratchet is raised off the bottom and the dock moves towards shore to a new equilibrium point. This continues as long as the water rises.

  • Patent number: 5282456
Abstract: A high efficiency fuel-fired induced draft condensing furnace is provided with a horizontal vent termination assembly installed in an exterior wall of a building served by the furnace. The vent termination assembly, constructed entirely from PVC plastic pipe and fittings, includes a combustion gas vent pipe connected to the furnace's draft inducer fan outlet, horizontally extending through an opening in the wall, and having an open discharge end positioned outwardly beyond the wall. A larger diameter combustion air inlet pipe circumscribes the vent pipe within the wall opening and forms around the vent pipe an annular combustion air flow passage that is communicated with the furnace combustion air inlet. A coupling member connected to the outer end of the inlet pipe has a diametrically enlarged end portion positioned on the outside surface of the wall, axially inwardly of the outer vent pipe, and forming an annular inlet to the flow passage between the two pipes.

  • Patent number: 5282457
Abstract: A high efficiency gas furnace utilizes a unique premix design in combination with a pressurized/high velocity combustion process. The combustion process occurs in a combustion chamber and the high temperature high velocity products of combustion follow a circuitous route from the combustion chamber through finned tubular conduits to an exhaust. Heat from the high temperature high velocity products is transferred to the finned tubular conduits. An air blower assembly forces air across the finned tubular conduits and the combustion chamber to remove the heat from the finned tubular conduits and transfer this heat to a building or an enclosed portion thereof.

  • Patent number: 5282460
Abstract: An exoskeletal robotic device supplements relative movement between biological skeletal members coupled at a biological joint of a wearer, and preferably forms complete sections of a skeleton to be worn by a human. First and second frame members for mechanical joints are attachable to the wearer adjacent the biological joint. The mechanical joints define a center of relative rotation of the frame members about at least two, and preferably three mutually perpendicular axes, the center of relative rotation of the frame members being displaced from the outer surfaces of the skeletal members to correspond in position with the center of the biological joint. Actuation devices in the form of hydraulic cylinders are coupled between the first and second frame members for rotating the frame members under power under control of a microprocessor which can execute stored sequences or apply power in the same direction as exerted by the wearer against pressure sensors coupled to the microprocessor.

Abstract: A reflectance oximeter is so mounted to the upstream or proximal side of a laryngeal mask as to face the posterior wall of the pharynx when the laryngeal mask has been positioned to perform its function of sealed, exclusive airway communication with the laryngeal inlet. Thus positioned, radiation from the oximeter can utilize local back-bone features as a reflector, for two-way passage of the radiation through tissue which characterizes the posterior wall of the pharynx. Moreover, the oximeter-observation region is within the body, so that ambient light has no degrading effect, and changes in oxygen saturation will be detected earlier than by use of any peripherally placed oximeter probe.

  • Patent number: 5282465
Abstract: A dual chamber pacemaker system is provided having an improved Wenckebach response for optimizing tracking of atrial signals having rates within a rate range above the normal tracking range, i.e., in a designated Wenckebach range. When an atrial sense occurs in the Wenckebach range, the AV delay is extended up to a predetermined maximum extension to enable delivery of a ventricular pulse at the ventricular upper rate limit (dynamic tracking limit). When the AV delay would have to be extended beyond the maximum extension in order to pace the ventricle at the dynamic tracking limit, the next ventricular stimulus is delivered asynchronously at an escape interval greater than the escape interval corresponding to the dynamic tracking limit, e.g., at a predetermined lower pacing limit.

Abstract: A system for disabling an oximetric device when radiation-carrying channels are exposed to excess ambient radiation is disclosed. It includes a transmitter channel adjacent the sample to be measured, means for isolating the channel from the sample so that it does not carry radiation reflected from or transmitted through the sample, a detector for receiving the transmitted signal, if any, and means for disabling the output in response to the transmitted signal. Preferably, the transmitter channel runs parallel to other transmitter channels in the device, and is isolated from undue ambient light. The system preferably includes means for determining when the second transmitted signal exceeds background noise and the output is disabled when the second transmitted signal exceeds background noise.
