  • Patent number: 5349778
Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed for using sub-freezing cold air and hot air generated from a vortex tube to exterminate pests, mildews or tumors. According to the method and apparatus of the present invention, compressed air is fed into vortex tube to generate a stream of cold air with sub-freezing temperature and a stream of hot air of elevated temperature. These jets of cold and hot air are then delivered to infested places to either cool down or heat up to temperatures lethal to undesirable organisms. Since only compressed air is used in operation, there is no adverse impact on the environment.

Abstract: A siding positioner/fastener that consists of a strip 40 with a continuous length, with inserts 50 coupled to it, at spaced intervals along the length of the strip. The strips are positioned and coupled to a substrate, aligning the strips perpendicular to the channel 70 length, which is parallel to the siding length, with a strip at each interval along the siding length, and with the inserts inline and parallel across each strip interval. A sloped channel is coupled to the back of the siding length. At each end the channel can slide on, or be pressed onto the inserts. The remaining inserts are pressed on. Each time an insert is locked onto the channel this aligns the following insert. • Patent number: 5349803
Abstract: The grid member is formed of sheet metal and has an inverted T-shape with a bulb at the top, a double thickness central web and oppositely disposed flanges at the bottom. To achieve controlled expansion, an extended angular lance is cut at the top of the bulb. Further, staggered cutouts are placed in the two thicknesses which make up the web. By staggering the cutout areas of adjacent web layers, the overall web strength is maintained. These web cutouts and the lance at the top of the bulb cooperate upon thermal expansion, causing the bottom flanges to buckle down, and the web and bulb to separate laterally and fold. The folded web configuration directed by the staggered cutout pattern will maintain longitudinal rigidity.

  • Patent number: 5349812
Abstract: A gas turbine combustor is capable of reducing NOx over a whole load range of a gas turbine. The combustor comprises two burner systems. It is possible to independently control a flow rate of combustion air supplied to a burner of the respective systems and a flow rate of bypass air jetted from through a bypass air port. The air supplied to the burners is mixed with fuel in a mixing chamber and then ejected into a combustion chamber so as to form a flame. The amount of bypass air is controlled in accordance with an operation load, a humidity of air and a heating value of fuel. It is therefore possible to prevent any blow off and reduce NOx over the whole load range of the gas turbine.

A gear train is selectively operatively joined between the first and second shafts by selectively engaging a first clutch for transmitting torque through the first clutch only in one direction from the first shaft to the second shaft when the fan is windmilling for driving the second shaft to allow an air-start of the gas turbine engine during flight. In a preferred embodiment, a second clutch is operatively joined to the gear train and is selectively engageable at speeds of the second shaft below a predetermined release speed, and disengageable at the release speed and above for disconnecting the air-start assembly once the engine has been started.

Abstract: A lock valve for marine hydraulic steering systems includes a valve body with a spool valve reciprocatingly received in a bore therein. A first port and a second port of the valve are connected to a manual pump. A third port and fourth port are connected to a double acting hydraulic cylinder connected to a rudder or steerable motor. There are valves within the lock valve which normally prevent fluid flowing between the ports so the steering system remains in a fixed position when the helm is released. Fluid can flow from the first port to the third port when the first port is pressurized. A return flow of fluid from the fourth port to the second port is permitted only when the first port is pressurized. When the second port is pressurized, fluid can flow the second port to the fourth port. A return flow of fluid from the third port to the first port is permitted only when the second port is pressurized.

  • Patent number: 5349819
Abstract: A water pressurizing unit for generating high pressure water by utilizing the water weight changes caused by the presence of a wave crest or wave trough directly above the apparatus. The apparatus is positioned under the surface of a body of water having waves and has a plunger having a flat disk at its upper end. The plunger moves vertically with respect to a rigidly mounted cylinder, which defines a fluid chamber having a cross sectional area less than the surface area of the flat disk. A conduit, in fluid communication with the fluid chamber, conducts water from the body of water to the fluid chamber and pressurized water to a collection tank. Inlet and outlet check valves insure that fluid does not flow from the collection tank to the fluid chamber, or from the fluid chamber to the water source. Preferably, a plurality of such units are arranged hydraulically in parallel with one another. In this embodiment, a single collection tank collects pressurized fluid from the individual units.

  • Patent number: 5349822
Abstract: Air separation by low temperature liquefaction and fractionation wherein feed air is compressed and cooled and supplied to a single stage air separation column from which gaseous nitrogen is removed frown the top and wherein an oxygen-rich liquid is removed from the bottom. The column contains solid material providing solid surfaces on which mass and energy transfer takes place to effect fractionation over a substantial vertical height in the single stage of the column. Liquid is removed from the column intermediate that height, and the removed liquid is subcooled and expanded to produce a gas and a liquid. The liquid is an ultra-high purity nitrogen product, and can be withdrawn from the cycle in liquid or vapor phase. Vapor is removed from the top of the column, cooled and partially condensed and phase separated. Vapor from the last-mentioned phase separation is discharged, thereby to eliminate from the cycle most of the impurities boiling lower than nitrogen.

The carrier assembly includes a multichip that has a CPU comprising a plurality of high speed chips. Attached to the carrier is a vacuum-sealed enclosure constructed to eliminate moisture condensation on the pins, and minimize the heat flow from the ambient to the coldplate of the cooler. The vacuum-sealed enclosure is connected to the coldplate with springs to ensure good thermal contact between the cooler and the carrier assembly. The refrigerator runs on a Stirling cycle and contains pressurized helium as the cooling fluid. The coldplate temperature can be maintained at a constant temperature as low as -60.degree. C. while removing 40 watts of active heat load generated by the CPU.

Abstract: A dispensing system and method for moving a confectionery mixture having a predetermined ratio of air to fluid to a freezing cylinder comprises a multiple portion tube containing the confectionery mixture, an air meter for controlling the ratio of air to fluid in the mixture, and a peristaltic pump for pumping the confectionery mixture through the tube. The peristaltic pump is positioned between a reservoir and the freezing cylinder and the tube is routed through the pump to form a generally U-shaped trough. When the pump is idle, some of the confectionery mixture settles in the generally U-shaped tube to form a liquid which prevents air from back flowing from a pressure side to a suction side of the pump. Accordingly, the consistency of the confectionery product is maintained when the pump is idle. The peristaltic pump also includes a proximity switch which prevents the pump from operating until all of its movable parts are properly secured.
