  • Patent number: 6098262
Abstract: A process for manufacturing a hollow body made of two mutually welded together metal bars which are flatly disposed on one another. Within an internal high-pressure forming tool in a closed position, the metal bars are widened by introducing a pressure fluid under a high pressure into the parting line existing between the metal bars, until they are placed on the die sinking of the forming tool defining the final contour while forming the hollow body. The metal bar composite is trimmed by a cutting operation, and the pressure fluid inlet area of the metal bar composite is cut off after the widening has taken place. In order to reliably manufacture a flangeless hollow body in a simple manner from two metal bars, the metal bars are seam-welded before entering into the forming tool, and the resulting metal bar composite is then trimmed by a beam welding process in the weld seam.

  • Patent number: 6098265
Abstract: An apparatus and method for positioning a latch assembly and a striker on a motor vehicle is disclosed. The apparatus is designed to improve the fit of the tailgate to the side walls or truck body. A good fit is defined as the outer surface of the tailgate and the outer surface of the side wall being coplanar when the tailgate is in the closed position. The apparatus, by way of a first formation and first locating element, determines the position of the latch assembly with respect to outer surface of the tailgate. The apparatus, by way of a second formation and second locating element, also determines the location of the striker with respect to the outer surface of the side walls. The apparatus, by way of a body member, also determines the position of the striker with respect to the latch assembly and vice versa. By setting the latch assembly and the striker by the above relations, build variances of the tailgate and of the truck body are eliminated as a possible cause for a poor fit.

  • Patent number: 6098271
Abstract: A method for assembling a magnetic disk drive with a relaying flexible printed circuit sheet and an actuator includes shaping at least one metal bump to form a first terminal on the relaying flexible printed circuit sheet. The shape of the metal bump determines the amount of solder that will adhere to the metal bump. This amount must be adequate to form an efficient electrical and mechanical connection between the first terminal and a second terminal on the actuator. The next step is laying solder on the metal bump so that the adequate amount of solder remains on the metal bump and forms a solder layer. After the solder layer is formed on the metal bump, the first terminal is placed on the second terminal so that the solder is squeezed between the first and second terminals.

Abstract: An electrical connector press for connecting an electrical connector to a printed circuit board. The electrical connector has contacts with compliant attachment zones for insertion into holes of the printed circuit board The press comprises a gripping device for holding a housing of the connector, a force measuring device connected to the gripping device a distance measuring device connected to the gripping device; and a controller connected to the gripping device, the force measuring device and the distance measuring device. The controller controls movement of the gripping device towards the printed circuit board. The controller is connected to a memory having data of geometry of the contacts and the data of a desired insertion depth of the contacts into the holes. The controller can determine a distance which the contacts should be inserted into the holes based upon the data in the memory and force sensed by the force measuring device after the compliant attachment zones contact the printed circuit board.

  • Patent number: 6098281
Abstract: Electrical pin (10) for solderless insertion into metallized apertures of circuit boards, comprising an elastically deformable press-fit portion (14) with four contact areas (26), which are located on a first larger diameter (28) as compared with the diameter of the apertures of the circuit boards. A positioning portion (18) is provided ahead of the press-fit portion (14) and a transition portion (16) lies therebetween. The positioning portion (18) also has four contact areas (36), which are located on a second diameter (30) slightly smaller than the diameter of the apertures. Contrary to the press-fit portion (14) the positioning portion (18) is not deformed during the insertion of the electrical pin (10). Due to the positioning portion (18) the electrical pins can be connected to the circuit board in two operation steps, the first one being the positioning step and the second one being the press-in step.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for fabricating fine pitch pattern multilayer printed circuit boards involving laminar stackable board layers providing power distribution, signal distribution and capacitive decoupling. In one respect, the invention relates to the fabrication of board layers by beginning with a metallic core, patterning the core, selectively enclosing the core in a dielectric, selectively depositing metal to form vias, plugs and signal lines, and forming dendrites with joining metallurgy on the vias and plugs to provide stackable connection from above or below the plane of the board layer. In another aspect, the invention is directed to the use of a sol-gel process to form a thin high dielectric constant crystalline film onto a metallic sheet followed with a deposition of a metallic layer onto the high dielectric constant film.
