  • Patent number: 6116071
Abstract: The invention relates to a rolling mill for sizing tubes or cylindrical bodies such as bars, rods and so on, and is intended for the iron and steel industry. The rolling mill is made up of a multiplicity of fixed three-roll rolling units, i.e. of the type known per se in which the position of the rolls cannot be adjusted under load and they are kinematically connected to each other so as to be set in rotation simultaneously, downstream of which are a multiplicity of adjustable three-roll rolling units. In the latter units the position of the rolls can be adjusted even under load and the purpose of these is to carry out the finishing of the work that is to be sized. The invention enables excellent use to be made of the characteristics of strength of the fixed units and of accurate working of the adjustable units, with the result that it is possible to build an inexpensive but high-performance rolling mill.

  • Patent number: 6116082
Abstract: A method and apparatus for testing a fluid conduit system for leaks. The apparatus is connected to an isolated section of a domestic fuel gas system which is suspected of leaking. The apparatus determines over recorded time periods the pressure drop in the system as a result of the actual gas leak and subsequently the pressure drop in the system as a result of an actual leak plus the leakage through an introduced artificial and calibrated orifice provided by the apparatus. The data is used in an equation for calculating the actual leakage rate from the system. This method avoids the need to repressurize the system between pressure drop measurements or having to know or assume the volume of the system being tested.

  • Patent number: 6116089
Abstract: A system for detecting defects in a rotating machine system includes a sensor such as an accelerometer coupled to the machine system for detecting vibrations of a rotating element. Output of the accelerometer is transmitted, preferably via a network data link to a monitoring/control circuit. The monitoring/control circuit analyzes the vibration data to develop a normal vibration profile for the machine system during a normal operating phase. The normal vibration profile is stored in a memory circuit for later reference. During subsequent operation of the machine system, the monitoring/control circuit cyclically analyzes vibration data to develop actual vibration profiles. The actual vibration profiles are compared to the normal vibration profile and, where variations between the profiles exceed preset tolerances, the circuit provides an indication of a malfunction or defect in the machine system.

  • Patent number: 6116091
Abstract: The recreation of vibration levels at certain points in a stationary vehicle interior that are representative of realistic road conditions are achieved using road measurements in conjunction with a technique known as "reciprocal filtering." The reciprocal filtering technique consists of using an inverse transfer function, or impulse response in the time domain, between an excitation transducer and an accelerometer to calculate the excitation signal needed to recreate the vibrations measured on the road when squeak and rattle are present in a component of the vehicle. A set of excitation signals may be recorded for each component in the vehicle which is suspected of producing squeak and rattle noise. When a complaint is made that a vehicle is producing squeak and rattle, a service technician may reproduce noise by inducing vibrations through a kit having a CD player, an amplifier, a bass shaker and a CD with the set of excitation signals stored on separate tracks thereof.

  • Patent number: 6116103
Abstract: A threaded leadscrew moves axially within the housing of a linear actuator. The leadscrew's movement rotates a threaded gear nut that surrounds the leadscrew. Stopping the gear nut rotation prevents leadscrew translation. The locking mechanism for selectively blocking rotation of the gear nut includes a cam mounted on the housing, which connects remotely to a user actuated handle. A lever, which mounts on the cam, has a tooth movable between adjacent teeth on the gear nut. The cam also has a blocker that engages the lever. When the cam is in the closed position, the blocker prevents the lever from moving to its released position away from the gear nut's teeth. When the cam is moved to the released position, the blocker releases the lever and allows it to move away from the gear nut. The lever has an opening that is somewhat bigger than a pin on the cam that extends into the opening. When the pin reaches one surface of the opening, it pulls the lever out of its engaged position.

Furthermore, an impact which occurs when the adjusting bolts and the table come into contact with each other is attenuated by shock absorbers which are respectively mounted on said stopper members.

Abstract: A system/method of resetting the value of a control parameter (GCW.sub.CP) indicative of vehicular gross combined weight and determined as a filtered/averaged value, to a predetermined default value upon sensing vehicle operating conditions deemed indicative of a change in vehicle loading. A vehicle automated mechanical transmission system is controlled as a function of the value of the control parameter. The default value is relatively high compared to the expected range of actual vehicle gross combined weight. Large skip upshifts, greater than 50% ratio step, are prohibited after a reset until the control parameter value is verified.

Abstract: A connection for preventing relative movement between coupled members in a clamped joint. In particular, ring gear/differential housing members are connected across a roughened surface finish providing protrusions and allow positive load transfer without slippage. Different methods are proposed to achieve the roughening, or surface modification, of the backside of the ring gear surface, and this design provides increased frictional coefficients without adversely affecting performance of the differential assembly. The simplicity and low cost of this connection makes it particularly useful for a wide variety of these bolted assemblies.

Abstract: A light-weight, strong and rigid rotatable spindle assembly utilizing a two-piece spindle suitable for employment in a variety of spindle applications, and in particular in a bicycle crankshaft assembly. Each spindle piece is integrally joined to a crank arm, and this joint, as well as the joint of the crank arm and the pedal tube, is reinforced with gussets. The two spindle pieces themselves are connected by means of a simple allen bolt within the interior of the bottom bracket shell, and this connection is thereby protected from the elements. As the two spindle pieces are pulled together by the allen bolt, they exert opposing forces on the inner race of a cartridge bearing, thereby fixing the lateral location of the spindle within the bottom bracket without exerting pre-load on the bearings. Proper alignment is easily accomplished by means of one or more spacers placed on either side of this inner race of the cartridge bearing.
