  • Patent number: 6260422
Abstract: An improved magnetostrictive torque sensor for sensing torque applied to a shaft that is rotatably supported in a housing. A magnetostrictive cylinder is fixed to the shaft. A stator is supported on the shaft by bearings to surround the magnetostrictive cylinder and is accommodated in the housing. The stator incorporates exciting coils and detecting coils such that the coils are located about the shaft. The magnetosttrictive cylinder is strained by torque applied to the shaft. The exciting coils generate flux running through the magnetostrictive cylinder. The generated flux is changed in accordance with the strain of the magnetostrictive cylinder. The detecting coils detect the flux changes. The stator is also rotatably fixed to the housing by bearings. Rotation of the stator relative to the housing is prevented by connectors that couple the stator with the housing. This prevents tension in wires that lead from the stator.

  • Patent number: 6260424
Abstract: The stand free multi-beamed load cell for accurately monitoring and registering weight changes has at multiple beams secured to one another to form a polygon rim with an open center. Multiple tabs are equally spaced from one another along the rim to receive securing members to secure the rim to a support surface. Each tab has a pair of balancing members on either side of the securing member to maintain the rim above the support surface. At least one of the beams has a bridge to reduce the depth of the beam to enable flexing under application of the weight. A strain gage proximate the bridge registers the flexing of the beams, sending the signals through an electronic connector to a control means. The balance members serve to minimize the deflection on the rim approximate the tabs, creating maximum strain level at the bridge. The tabs and balance members further serve to accommodate for any variations in the support surface.

  • Patent number: 6260462
Abstract: Cartons of the type used for domestic milk supply may be more readily opened if a portion of the ridge that extends above the wings of the carton is first severed between the wings and the heat sealed closure so that the severed portion of the ridge may be folded back from above the wings or removed by a further cut across the ridge to the first line of sever. The wings are then free to be folded back and pressed inward to open the carton to form a pouring lip. A device for opening cartons comprises a thin blade secured to a handle and hinged within a shrouded recess in a two-part housing. Handles act about the double action hinge to move the blade across the slot to sever a portion of the carton ridge positioned in the slot. A tongue (not shown) holds the device in alignment with the ridge to ensure that the severing is below the sealed portion of the ridge.
