Abstract: It is difficult for the elderly or an individual with a bad back to raise and lower the toilet seat and lid of a Western style toilet. Depression of a pedal with the foot causes an operating arm to rotate and an actuator arm to push upward, whereupon the toilet seat is pushed upward by the pushing motion; and release of the pedal causes the operating arm to rotate in the return direction and the actuator arm to descend, whereupon the toilet seat is drawn downward. The operating arm is rotatably supported by a support member with the linking end thereof rotatably attachable to the bottom of the actuator arm, so that depression of the pedal with the foot causes the operating arm to rotate and the actuator arm to push upward, whereupon the toilet seat is pushed upward by the pushing motion; and release of the pedal causes the operating arm to rotate in the return direction and the actuator arm to descend, whereupon the toilet seat is drawn downward by this descent. The actuator arm is extendable and retractable.

Abstract: A battery comprising a steel can having a bottom end, an open top end, and side walls extending between the top and bottom ends. Positive and negative electrodes are disposed in the can. An outer cover is disposed over the open end of the can. The outer cover has an outer flange disposed on the outside of the can walls and an inner flange disposed on the inside of the can wall. A seal is disposed between the can and the outer cover so that the seal is disposed against the inner and outer flanges of the outer cover. The outer cover is preferably crimped against the can wall to compress the seal between the inner and outer flanges and the container, thereby minimizing axial loading on the can and allowing for use of a thin gauge can.

Abstract: A method is described for producing a conducting connection through insulating layers by way of a contact hole and conducting materials with which the contact hole is filled. The method permits the production of a contact hole resembling the shape of a wineglass, into which conducting filling material and barrier layers can be inserted without the known problems such as void formation, overetching trenches, and dielectric close-off. It is possible in this way, for example, to produce an electric connection between the diffusion zone of a selection transistor and the lower electrode of a storage capacitor of large-scale integrated DRAM and FeRAM components with the aid of only a few mask steps.

Abstract: The system comprises an appliance (10) for personal body care, a pump (20) and a holder (40). The appliance (10) comprises a treatment device (11, 14, 31) for carrying out a body-care treatment under the influence of a fluid. The fluid is held in the holder (40) and can be pumped to an outlet opening 30 (32) by means of the pump (20). The system is characterized in that the holder (40) comprises a flexible wall (41), and in that the pump (20) is detachable from the holder (40) and is detachable from the appliance (10). This combination of measures makes 42 it possible to adapt the dimensions of the holder (40) to an 4 ergonomic shape of the appliance (10).

Abstract: A transmission for a trimmer/mower can be easily mounted onto a bearing housing of a trimmer/mower. The trimmer/mower has a vertically extending drive shaft and the transmission has a worm gear drive assembly that is drivingly connected to the drive shaft to provide an output shaft extending substantially horizontally. The worm gear drive assembly enables speed reduction and torque conversion that increases the speed of rotation and torque of the output shaft as compared with that of the input shaft. Attachments to be used on the trimmer/mower that operate in a substantially vertical plane can be mounted on the output shaft. Further, existing trimmer/mower can be retrofit with a bearing housing to which the transmission can be quickly and easily mounted. The mounting of the transmission onto the bearing housing can be accomplished without the need for tools by providing a twist-on mounting arrangement with a rotation prevention lock having a simple construction.

Abstract: A marking apparatus provides a method of marking a line on a surface of a workpiece at a selected distance from a datum edge of the surface. To practice this method a scribe retaining apparatus is attached to a ruling blade of a geometrical instrument so that it can slide along an axis of the ruling blade. A stock of the geometrical instrument is then brought into abutting contact with the datum edge and held against it at an angle selected so that a first, flat, portion of a bottom of the scribe retaining apparatus abuts the surface of the workpiece. In this orientation a working tip of a retained scribe is adjacent to, but out of contact with, the surface of the workpiece. One then slides the scribe retaining apparatus axially along the ruling blade until the working tip of the scribe is at the selected distance from the datum edge, and locks the scribe retaining apparatus to the ruling blade.

Abstract: An orientation sensor capable of generating at least one output signal indicative of a particular orientation parameter is described. The orientation sensor comprises a sensor housing defining a closed internal chamber including a first internal surface. The first internal surface supports a first electrically conductive pattern which itself forms part of a sensing arrangement. The first electrically conductive pattern includes an arrangement of electrically isolated segments in a predetermined configuration. A flowable material is contained within the internal chamber, which flowable material contacts a portion of the first internal surface dependent upon the value of the particular orientation parameter. An electrical property is measurable between the segments such that the orientation parameter can be determined using the output signal based only on the electrical property and, therefore, only on the portion of the first internal surface contacted by the flowable material.
