Abstract: A pattern is determined of the neck movement of a subject. The head/body movement of the subject is recorded with markers placed on the shoulders and on the head and thus moving with the subject. The locus curve of each marker in three-dimensional space is then determined in dependence on the time and it is stored as a data set. The neck movement is isolated from the head and torso movements by determining the difference between the average of the two locus curves that represent the shoulder movements and the locus curve representing the head movement. The pattern of movement established on the cranio-corpo-graphy is evaluated and analyzed using a data-processing device. The method is particularly suitable for determining the presence and the severity of an injury to the cervical spine as a result of whiplash caused by a traffic accident.

Abstract: A proportional oxygen sensor, a three-way catalyst, a binary O2 sensor, a NOx purification device, and a binary O2 sensor are positioned in the named order in the exhaust system of an internal combustion engine. A correction coefficient KMON2, which is set in accordance with the degree of deterioration of a three-way catalyst, is used to correct the timer value tmMON2 used to measure the time extending from the time at which the output of the O2 sensor is changed when the air-fuel ratio is increased, until the time at which the output of the O2 sensor is changed. When the corrected timer value tmMON2 is smaller than a reference time TNOxREF, it is ascertained that deterioration of the NOx purification device has occurred.

Abstract: The present invention deals with determining the level of fluid in a container. Typically, a beverage container containing a liquid will absorb heat energy from the surrounding environment at a greater rate than a gaseous component in the headspace of the beverage container. Thus, as the liquid is drawn from a beverage container a greater headspace results. If a thermometric measuring device is employed along the height of the beverage container the volume may be determined by observing the difference in the temperature along the height of the beverage container. In practice, a beer keg may exhibit a difference of as much as 9 degrees Fahrenheit on the exterior surface of the beer keg when measured at the headspace as opposed to the area where the liquid is present in the beverage container.

Abstract: A wireless (e.g., radio) system and method for automatic water level maintenance of, e.g., a swimming pool utilizing capacitive liquid level sensing. A reference electrode allows water level sensing independent of the water chemistry or temperature. Capacitive electrodes having areas larger than the reference electrode sense various liquid levels when the liquid covers an area of any sensing electrode equal to the area of the reference electrode. Averaging is incorporated to filter out effects of wind or other disturbances. Upon sensing a given condition, the transmitter transmits a sensed condition to a remote receiver for control of valves and pumps for changing the water level in the pool. The receiver includes safety timers for filling and emptying to protect against equipment failure or communications faults. User selectable identification allows identical such radio systems to operate within proximity to each other. Power saving features are used to extend battery life.

Abstract: A gravity measuring instrument comprises a housing, a float, and proximity sensing means between the housing and the float. The housing defines a vertically oriented elongated chamber for containing a liquid. The chamber has an upper end and a lower end. The float is elongated and is positioned in the chamber. The float has an upper end and a lower end. A liquid partly fills the chamber and the float is positioned for free floating movement in the liquid in response to gravity variations. A proximity target is on the lower end of the elongated float and a proximity sensor is supported in immovable relation with the housing beneath the lower end of the elongated float. The sensor provides electrical signals representative of distance between the proximity sensor and proximity target. The diaphragm carries respective SAW devices on the respective sides thereof, the SAW devices having different resonant frequencies. Variations in pressure within the second chamber (12) relative to the pressure within the first chamber (11) will cause deflection of the diaphragm and the resulting changes in resonant frequency of the SAW devices can be analyzed to indicate the pressure differential between the chambers. As illustrated, the pressure-measuring device is incorporated within a valve assembly for a vehicle tire. When the vehicle tire is inflated the inflation pressure is trapped within the first chamber (11) as a reference. Abstract: High purity cobalt with a very few content of impurities such as copper, a method of manufacturing thereof, and high purity cobalt targets are provided. The cobalt containing impurities such as copper is dissolved in a hydrochloric acid solution, and the concentration of the hydrochloric acid of the aqueous solution of cobalt chloride is adjusted to 0.1 kmol/m3 to 3 kmol/m3. Then, cobalt is added in the aqueous solution of cobalt chloride, and an inert gas is injected into the solution with agitating, in order to convert the divalent copper ions contained in the aqueous solution of cobalt chloride to monovalent copper ions. Then, the aqueous solution of cobalt chloride is fed into a column filled up with the anion exchange resins. Cobalt is not absorbed on the anion exchange resins although the monovalent copper ions are absorbed on the anion exchange resins. Therefore, copper can be separated from the aqueous solution of cobalt chloride.

Abstract: A device for simultaneously removing all of the lug nuts on a vehicle's wheel, thereby reducing the amount of time required to remove the wheel from the vehicle. The device has multiple sockets that fit over each lug nut. Each socket is turned by a lug gear and all of the lug gears are turned by a single central gear. The central gear has a hole or slot in its center for receiving a hand tool or power tool that provides the rotational force. The lug gears are positioned around the circumference of the central gear and the teeth of the lug gears engage with teeth of the central gear. An outer ring gear surrounds all of the lug gears providing an inward pressure that maintains the connection between the teeth of the lug gears and the central gear. When the central gear is rotated each of the lug gears rotate in an opposite direction thereby allowing each lug nut to be turned simultaneously.

Abstract: In a method and apparatus for rotating loose laminations in a loose lamination die, a strip is fed through the die to a rotatable blanking chamber of a blanking station. There, a punch engages with a die ring to punch a lamination free from the strip. The rotatable blanking chamber is biased in an upwardly direction. When the punch is not engaging with the die ring, the rotatable chamber is in an upward position wherein a gap develops between laminations retained at a bottom of the rotatable chamber, and those laminations lying directly below the rotatable chamber. The rotatable chamber can then be rotated without damage to the laminations at the gap because of the presence of the gap. Thereafter, a succeeding lamination can be punched after the rotation has occurred. As the punch engages the strip on top of the die ring, the rotatable chamber is pushed downwardly so that the gap at the bottom of the rotatable chamber disappears.
